FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

I thought the One uses 9 jB of slower memory. 3 jigabytes times 3 operating systems. When game is loaded, say for instance titanfall, it has 6 for the gaem since the only OS needed is the main one.

Plus, again, less memory on ps4 will mean two discs. Similar to how 360 works because it has less memory than ps3.

Just want to take a second to admit that you got me. I'm pretty impressed and a little embarrassed.

Isn't there a 2GB reserve? I highly doubt games are gonna need more than 6gb by the end of this generation.

In the words of what Bill Gates may or may not (but probably not, but it is a favorite quote of my nevertheless) have said many years ago "640K is more memory than anyone will ever need".

You just never know.

Some of you need to be slapped in the face with a large salmon over your ignorance. This whole thing has been much ado over nothing.

Tell me about it. I still have no f'ing clue what is going on. The preorder cancellations and the bans are hilarious though.

Do people realize how sufficient 4.5GB is for games as of now? Games running on high end PCs with insane resolutions can barely reach that.
I'm more concerned with how way overly sufficient 2-3 GB reserved for a console OS is, esp. when you're putting aside 1 gig "just in case" without any concrete plans for it.

There's a lot more than this, but one of the things I'm being told is that the RAM in the PS4 makes a huge difference in computations for example. Can range from anything like permutations of AI behavior (open world games).

The difference between the types and speed of RAM in both machines will really only truly come to light in exclusive titles, unsurprisingly. Unsure about others, but at this particular (incredibly large) studio, the games are being developed to Xbox One specs, then ported over as required.

You would think at this point they'd just develop on an over spec PC and port down instead.

Sony will work around the 2 disc limitation thanks to the Gaikai cloud. This will allow more RAM for PS4 when connected to the internet so you can download that second disc and DVR it.

The catch is that since the DVR only records 15 minutes, you have to reconnect to the cloud within that time limit or all the RAM is gone. :(

Ok, here ya go:

Look at all the Junior Member Bone shills in this thread... Cancel your preorders - I'm pretty sure someone will pick them up. Fight the good fight - XBox fans! You are nothing if not dedicated.

I go to lunch with a client, and come back to this. Bone fans have been waiting a while for some not positive PS4 news that they can spin - however, this isn't much of a surprise.

I guess they feel unfairly persecuted or some such crap.

could the RAM limitation be because they don't have 16GB devkits, they are only working with 8GB devkits, when 16GB devkits become available the RAM will be increased.

Ps4 has the same 1080p Shaders? Doesn't Titanfall require at least that much memory to make those shaders fit?

If it comes to Sony it will provably be sacrificed to only 60fps at 720p. That's ok, but I'll stick with the One imo

Have you seen titanfall?

It uses a huge ass old engine (source engine, btw half life 3 confirmed)
Looks shit (graphics wise) so it would be a shame not to run on 4k/120fps on the old wii

Ok so, my assessment of the rumor.

4.5 dedicated for games.
1.5 dedicated for the OS.
1 reserved for games (über devs club only).
1 reserved for future proofing the OS.

Am I right?

Yes, but those people were under the impression that the PS4 will have ~2GB more for games. A notion Sony wasn't in any hurry to dispel (which is my issue with this news, not anything else).

Devs already know and they are the ones that really need that info. If they never told devs about it I would agree with you.

Yup, that's what I am afraid of now, hope I'm really wrong.
You are wrong. PS4 is still way more powerful and still the console for "gamers". That's how it is marketed and how the features are integrated. The RAM allocation doesn't matter at all, as long as devs are happy. Which they are. If devs simply can't use the RAM right now, it doesn't take anything away from that if it is allocated for the OS for now.

I've been busy since this first got posted and now it's a tread with a billion posts and a silly name change.

What the fuck is going on?

That´s awful.

Both machines - Ps4 and xbox one - are already coming in underpowered and on top of that both machines reserve a lot of resources for non gaming stuff. That´s just awful.

The next question should be: how many cpu core and gpu resources are reserved for the os too?!

That also explains the poor grafical quality of games like Knack, Driveclub and Killzone (the forest area).

And now i can also understand why Infamous had such amount of pop ups.

I'm very underwhelmed und it´s clear that Sony´s gamers console marketing is just.... marketing.

Just caught up.

Maaaan this is bad news for PlayStation. So I guess the Xbox One is more powerful now right?

Oh snap! I bet that's why Titanfall isnt on it. They were waiting to see if the specs were finalized and 1080p.

Say good bye to multiplats
Sarcasm?

The PS4 is still a much stronger console.

Lol, like I said before I think overtime both the PS4 and Xbox One's OS footprint will come down with optimization.

It is rather surprising that PS4 has 3.5GB reserved for OS when they originally planned to ship with 4 GB.

Pretty much my largest fear

Haven't we had multiple devs making launch titles quoted saying they aren't even using/ don't know what to do with the amount of RAM available to them yet. Even if it's only 5GB currently available, that's 10 times what they have on current-gen systems, it's a smorgasbord right now.

We really don't know what Sony is going to be doing with the OS right now. Maybe services they have planned but haven't revealed will take more memory. Maybe Gaikai requires more. Just like this gen, they can easily give more memory back to the devs over time. Did XMB not go from using a 25% of available RAM when it launched to under 1/8 only 3 years into the system's life?

People cancelling their pre-orders over this is absolute redonkulous.

I don't know exactly what's going on but its good to see the return of bear/salmon thread titles even if it isn't sales age.

I thought you were serious and then I read this, which just isn't true, since the PS4 has 5.5GB dedicated for devs. But why does that even matter. Are we really gonna wank ourselves raw over a 0.5GB launch advantage of the PS4 now? Gaf, you crazy.

I don't think anyone's insinuating that 4.5 gigs of GDDR5 isn't alot for gaming (it is). I just want to know what they're doing with 3.5 gigs for a FreeBSD operating system. Like many have mentioned, we can't even get windows 7 or 8 to use that much. Why would they allocate so much?

You're right. It could have nothing to do with the fact they were beta unfinished demo's made on devkits.

So was the 7 gigs figure just speculation, or did they change their minds? Anyhow, i'm staying a PC gamer a little bit longer this time around.
Neither them nor Microsoft have really inspired me to pick one of these consoles up at launch.

So i'll see how it goes in practicality.

100% correct.

This isn't a scandal. It's still GDDR5 RAM. The PS4's status as a megabeast has been slightly reduced to superbeast.

I've seen more redonkulousness right here, in this very thread.

For example:

PS3 had 60, then Sony was smart enough to upgrade to 120 and higher. Mind you that's verrrry slow memory which is why it seems like a lot compared to xbone and ps4

4.5gb CONFIRMED.

lol No.

Tell me about it. I still have no f'ing clue what is going on. The preorder cancellations and the bans are hilarious though.

Let me try to break it down:

- Spanish translation of a possible Eurogamer article says that today an article was going to be published about RAM drama in a tweet and that they were waiting for clarification from Sony.

- After serious uproar from GAF, tweeter retracts and says it's not that serious.

- Today, the article get published and it says PS4 devs only have access to 4.5GB of the 8GB of RAM, with 3.5GB going to the OS footprint.

- GAF erupts in a frenzy of Sony fans looking for clarification, XBone fans feeling vindicated after taking guff, and rabid trolls trying to stir the pot with FUD

- SonyGAF insiders come down and explain that while it might or might not be true, the fact remains that it's a measure for Sony to prevent not getting caught with their pants down like they did this gen with PS3 which makes a lot of sense.

- People still freak out and say stupid stuff because console warz.

Hope that helps.

If the insider leaks are true then 1GB for future features, 1.5GB for the OS, and 1 GB for reserve ?
