Ok so, my assessment of the rumor.

4.5 dedicated for games.
1.5 dedicated for the OS.
1 reserved for games (über devs club only).
1 reserved for future proofing the OS.

Am I right?
No. The extra 1 GB is for all the devs in case they need it. If Sony is starting to get complaints that devs need more RAM they will unlock it for everybody.

I've been busy since this first got posted and now it's a tread with a billion posts and a silly name change.

What the fuck is going on?
The usual stuff.

Such a kerfuffle over nothing. 5.5 GB for games which will probably only get larger once they shrink the OS footprint like they did with PS3. Big deal.

Sounds like it. Though I'm guessing the "uber dev" ram will be space for things that can be shut off while playing a game, similar to wireless on the Vita. That way they can add stuff there, but shut it down if it's a problem.

It's a MILD disappointment, but how much having that RAM will benefit us is entirely hypothetical without any games existing to show us how it could be otherwise, so short of crazy optimization and blowing the doors wide open later on so it's not a big deal (and in that case it's a later gen boost), though I am amazed at how some people seriously canned their PS4 pre-orders over this. Though after the last thread maybe I shouldn't be.

I really dont understand the 1 gig of "flexible memory".

So a gig of memory that isnt dedicated to the OS but isnt fully dedicated to gaming ether. Doesnt make much sense.

Given DF's recent FUD spreading I wouldnt be shocked if they selectionally twisted some things around here but I still dont get whats going on.

Oh and just out of curiosity what was the PS3 OS footprint at launch versus now. Wasnt it close to 200mbs or something silly?

Comics, serious business!
Sarcasm?

The PS4 is still a much stronger console.

5.5GB GDDR5 vs 5GB DDR3
1.84TF GPU vs 1.23TF GPU

much? We won't really see any differences between the platforms.

What is clear is that the difference between PC and consoles this generation is going to be bonkers.

Actually, it's usually around 600MB for 15 min of 1080p in .mp4 for youtube.

Regardless, it's ridiculous if they are holding that in RAM.

I was going with YouTube's recommended settings for uploading, which are admittedly kinda high. If you got that figure from downloading a video, I believe it's because YouTube transcodes/compresses to a lower bitrate for playback.

I thought the One uses 9 jB of slower memory. 3 jigabytes times 3 operating systems. When game is loaded, say for instance titanfall, it has 6 for the gaem since the only OS needed is the main one.

Plus, again, less memory on ps4 will mean two discs. Similar to how 360 works because it has less memory than ps3.

Quite a while ago, I was cheerfully trolling and wrote, what if it was 4+4GB configuration, i.e. 4 for games and 4 for OS. Oh how prophetic that little joke turned out to be.

Makes me wonder, given what we've seen from cards with 2GB ram, why didn't Sony just occupy 5.5GB for features and 3.5GB for games given if what KZSF shown is the future, then 1.5GB being reserved for non-GPU related tasks ought to be plenty. Nearly a 7 times increase. Lest we forget, that was the original figure anyway.

Plus, there is nothing like future proofing your console for one that no one would dare to guess upon.

Octodad dev on Twitter, makes this rumor seem more true. Oh well I am disappointed to say the least, yes I know PS4 is still more powerful than Xbox One, but that huge amount of RAM couldn't got us some crazy possibilities, I am not saying you can't do much with 4.5GB, but you couldn't done much more with 7GB. Also I don't care for OS features, save for sleep mode and minor multitasking features the VIta has (Vita does this with 512MB)

I am amazed at a lot of these reactions. I would like to lean on thinking people are being ridiculous for the sake of it.

If you want the absolute most powerful thing you can get when the PS4/XB1 come out, it isn't those systems anyways.

So now the devs all come out and say we're idiots for caring about this. Nice.

I did not read it like that. And why would random Gaffers know it's worth caring about more than a developer?

He is right about there not being enough palms.

I bet Sony went around asking devs how much RAM they felt need allocated for everything they needed to do, and if need be - can unlock that extra 1GB for them in the future.

There is still no confirmation. Everyone in this thread is either freaking out unnecessarily over a rumor that doesn't make any sense, or is taking the piss, mods included. Shit, even some developers are taking shots!

Digital Foundry has broken GAF. It's kinda sad...

Did anyone ever even ask Sony if the 7GB thing was true or not? Are they supposed to respond to every speculative notion that spreads on the internet?

Sony feels bad about this

Monday Cerny announces "while Devs are happy with the 8gb of GDDR5, our gamers were not"

"So we're doubling it again to 16gb's"

"Devs can't possibly use that much ram now but on the off chance they will"

So less tub reading for people then?

That´s awful.

Both machines - Ps4 and xbox one - are already coming in underpowered and on top of that both machines reserve a lot of resources for non gaming stuff. That´s just awful.

The next question should be: how many cpu core and gpu resources are reserved for the os too?!

That also explains the poor grafical quality of games like Knack, Driveclub and Killzone (the forest area).

And now i can also understand why Infamous had such amount of pop ups.

I'm very underwhelmed und it´s clear that Sony´s gamers console marketing is just.... marketing.

So, you believe the reason these games don't look good (in your opinion) is because of how the RAM is split and not because they're unfinished code running on unfinished hardware?

What is the point of reserving 1GB of games if that RAM is going to be used for games, anyways? Uber devs club? What?

I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that indie devs only have access to 3GB of RAM for One development. I'm assuming that all devs have the same restrictions too so that's still 1.5GB more of faster RAM for devs to play with. Unless I read that wrong..?
