FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

But any console wasn't going to be a improvement over a high end pc. Happend last gen. Still, the games coming out on PC will be ports of consoles games, therefore, being limited by the limitations of the consoles.
Everyone knew this years ago

Last gen kept up fairly well actually, for the price beyond console specific games it was a better investment to buy a console than to get a high end pc at the time or around a year later. That's nowhere near the case now as high end pcs can pretty decently beat the PS4 right now in almost all areas.

Hey Youngblood. Found one.

My contention was never that there were none. However, my suspicion is that the pandemonium would die down quite a bit if posters responded to actual recent negative posts, as opposed to everyone just addressing the general perceived sentiment that "everyone is losing their shit over this!"

MS came out pre-E3 and right from the off, said that the XB1 was not just about the games, but also about:

"TV! TV! TV! TV! SPORTS! TV! SPORTS!".

And, they threw the gamers a bone, "CALL OF DUTY DOG!"

The response? They were panned for allocating hardware resources to something other then games. Personally I'd thought it was a smart move. Still do, I've had my XB1 on pre-order for months. I want more than a games machine sitting under my TV for next-gen.

Now, Sony (wisely I'd say) are doing the same - allocating hardware and memory so the PS4 too can (potentially) do:

"TV! TV! TV! TV! SPORTS! TV! SPORTS!"

....and anything else that becomes popular over the lifetime of the console.

The response? A near-collective shrug of the shoulders and "No big deal, nothing has changed here."

That's.....interesting.

If Sony are guilty of anything, its not coming out before now and telling people that its not just about the games for PS4. Either way. 5 to 5.5Gb of RAM should be enough for some decent games, regardless of what console you buy.

It also means that Sony can now go toe-to-toe with MS for the non-game features. That's good, for everyone. Nothing wrong with competition.

Source?

Because this is a load of bull. You can't be mad at Sony for saying absolutely nothing while fanboys and the media lead you to believe something else. Sony never gave any details on RAM usage, and you just assuming a buttload of things that you can't even confirm.

Then you had the wrong PC last gen...I was playing stuff with way better visual fidelity than on consoles

So...if I own a S2000 and my buddy owns a Kia, are both cars equally fast since they are both 4 bangers?

The logic in this thread would point to yes...

Nothing special or worth the drama in my opinion.
They're just trying to balance all the different things while leaving the possibility for future proofing the system on the OS/applications level.
5.5GB for games, 1,5GB for standard OS and 1GB being left for future applications seems a really balanced approach.
Let's not forget why we have 8GB in these systems in first place....and hint...it's NOT JUST for games.
In fact the PS4 GPU and CPU were designed and targeted to run games with a memory budget of 4GB (actually even less because originally 4GB was the total memory, when Killzone4 was unveiled in February it used what? 3.5GB?).
I think people realize that a 100Gigaflops CPU and a 1,8Teraflops GPU are totally mismatched and underpowered to go with 8GB of memory if the purpose is just to run games.
The reason Sony decided to upgrade their memory was that 4GB were totally fine for games but they would have been left behind significantly with the OS, multitasking and applications.
The extra memory went mainly into adressing that. Microsoft is doing the same thing, 8GBs are not there just for the games, 3GB are allocated for the operating system.
Also the situation at launch will evolve and change during the years so we'll see much more stuff added, resources could be allocated differently, memory given back to developers, etc. In this phase is important that they take a balanced approach so that they don't end up like with the PS3 where they couldn't implement cross game chat (not to mention the new PS Store which barely runs on the system).

Why doesn't the title read "RUMOR: PS4 only to have 4.5 gigs reserved for games?"

This title is is complete BS. Change it back to the original title.

I shudder to think how much money DF and other sites will get in ad revenue from this. They must be drowning in pageviews right now.

Drama indeed!

So if this is true, then it'll be the PS4 holding back devs from utilizing more ram on the XB1? Lowest common denominator development and all that...

PS4 4.5GB for games vs. XB1 5GB for games?

I know you said 10. I was just saying I found one. It's a start.

I'm not gonna continue, though. Too much effort.

Not really not anywhere near the same performance differences. Of course you potentially beat the consoles performance wise then, but the power or performance to pound/dollar ratio was a heck of a lot more for a reasonable upgrade.

I wonder if my PSN account balance will transfer from my PS3 to my PS4, anyone know?

It should.. I mean PS+ is carrying over if you have it already so why wouldn't the SEN/PS Store balance carry over? It's not like they'll have a completely separate storefront for the PS4, right?

Yup, you figured it out you tech genius.

Because the extra gig may or may not be available depending on what the user is doing.

How would this work in a practical sense? Would this mean that a game would have to lower it's ram usage if the user started streaming their game or something along those lines? The idea of not knowing how much ram you'll be able to access on a console seems strange to me but I'm not a developer so what do I know?

I played COD4 on a pc the cost less than the 360 and had much better graphics and performance than the same game on 360

Cool, just wanted to know before I invest into some PSN giftcards.

Your not getting it, why would I choose a PS4 over a PC aside from Sony Exclusives I don't care about? I was hoping that if I bought a PS4 it would be shortly smoked by a PC costing the same amount in a years time. Sure random won't have a performance advantage but it would help in the creation and development of certain kinds of games e.g open world games. Now if the PS4 is simply not all that much better than current gaming pc's my hopes for improvements in those sorts of games diminishes.

And it's still going to cost about a grand to get a PC that smokes a PS4 right now regardless. For some that savings is more than enough to compensate for the diminished returns.

Okay, I want to throw out a challeng, here. To all the people that are rebutting the gross overreaction occurring here, I'd like you to find five unique posters that are legitimately making a big deal out of this over the course of the last 500 posts. If you find that this is an easy task, then I shut up and say carry on. If you find this more difficult than you had originally surmised, then perhaps consider cooling it with the "OMG, hyperbole everywhere! Calm down people!" posts.

haha, so true.

DF already came out this week saying that the PS4 DVR function would only record up to 7min of gameplay, which has been confirmed to be 15min by Sony since then...

Have you been reading the entire thread? This isn't the same case. Of course nothing has been confirmed, but reading what the GAF insiders have posted, it seems like DF might be right about things in this case, or partially correct at least.

it has mostly been confirmed by 3 out of 4 GAF "insiders"

so unless there is a statement by Sony in the opposite GAF is running with it.

This is probably going to get lost in a sea of nonsense but I wonder what the conditions are to be able to use that extra 1 gig. Probably lose out on some OS features in game (like say the live recording of the game)?

You seem to have a fixation with the title of the thread, did you have a bad experience in the wild that caused some discomfort?

This whole thread reminds me of how people were freaked out about last of us spoilers ... Like they said if someone revealed
Elli is infected
the game is spoilt ... It wasnt ... Basically in the whole view of the game that spoiler didn't matter so much ... It's what else happened ... Think once things are calmer and were nearer launch games and proper comparisons will be made.

Tell me, what do you think of all this. I know earlier you talked about the dust settling. However, do you believe that the masses are overreacting given how console has been marketed thus far, actual figures or performance ramifications notwithstanding?

Also, yes, like the bird says, it's a marathon and much like with PS3, we'll see incremental increases in the amount available for game development. Even then, for system that has no clear indication to set a foot in the world of cable tv, that we ought to swallow the pill of such deduction on faith because two developers say it's inconsequential? And even though 5.5GB sounds a whole lot better than 4.5GB, the media is running with the latter because unlike MS's RAM policy and much like their earlier DRM policies, this "Flexible" RAM situation seems quite muddy. Do the developers develop being cognizant of 5.5GB being the limit or not?

Already canceled my PS4 preorder a few weeks back, why yall'z late to the party?

Anyway, reason for cancellation had nothing to do with this, just that there wasn't anything for me at launch. However, this is still bad news. I can't believe how many people actually thought that it was only 1gig of RAM reserved for the OS. :/

With that said, PS4 is still more powerful than XB1 even with the smaller amount of RAM available. Just don't expect a noticeable difference(if any) in multiplat games during the first year.

It's increasingly hard to tell who's being serious at this point. But there is without a doubt a huge sense of FUD being spread thats clearly misaligned with the actual implications.

naw, aside from 2 or 3 posts, the biggest negative reaction was nothing more than disappointment that devs wouldn't have access to 7/8ths of the RAM as was speculated previously.

And I'm still disappointed, but then again I'm disappointed in the 1.84 TF graphics core and low power laptop cpu. People sure got a lot more hardware for their money in 2006/7, relatively speaking.

If they are as right as they were for the DVR stuff...

Did you read this?

Here's the deal...somewhat. From a dev at one of the biggest in the industry. Just a messenger here.

Dev still a little cagey to give out 100% concrete numbers unfortunately like I was previously told, so I apologize ahead of time that they're not as detailed, but these are supposed to be the closest to detailed info I get on the OS footprint:

-At most, the OS uses 1.5GB, with a good amount of that helping the HD recording feature and on the fly switching/ multi tasking
-4.5GB is indeed about what's available for devs at present.
-1GB is set aside for futureproofing OS operations down the line.
-1GB for developer reserve, should they need it

And finally as an important point, I'm being told the faster RAM in the PS4 does in fact make a huge difference.

By the way , Why is important for some people the "living recording" option, I mean most of my friends do not care about it....

Can someone explain how huge or important it is....?

Thanks.

Something that has been glanced over concerning these specs is how much memory is truly needed given the speed of the actual hardware. What I mean is there is only so much processing that can be done per cycle eventually you will hit a wall were you can justify limiting the ram to split for other functions while using the hard drive to stream when necessary to the ram.

I pose this question to the more developer savvy GAF out there since while I am a coder myself I do not have loads of experience leveraging these types of components in a closed environment.

As mentioned already; a good gaming PC nets you about $1000. It will always range in that ballpark if you're going for an up-to-date system each time every three or so years.

The PS4 is less than half that, with the same games, some of its own exclusives, comparable performance, twice the shelf-life, more GDDR5 (potentially more performance), and so on. It's a completely moot point unless you're a rich bastard.

That's up to developers

Any source on that? Oddly cross-game chat is available but not its technical counterpart? As mentioned it doesn't seem to be up to devs. when it comes to Vita (if the claims are true) if true this is unfortunate give its simplicity and functionality.
