As mentioned already; a good gaming PC nets you about $1000. It will always range in that ballpark if you're going for an up-to-date system each time every three or so years.

The PS4 is less than half that, with the same games, some of its own exclusives, comparable performance, twice the shelf-life, more GDDR5 (potentially more performance), and so on. It's a completely moot point unless you're a rich bastard.

you call pc gamers rich bastards? i feel dirty rich now.

This whole thread reminds me of how people were freaked out about last of us spoilers ...
Like they said if someone revealed Elli is infected the game is spoilt
... It wasnt ... Basically in the whole view of the game that spoiler didn't matter so much ... It's what else happened ... Think once things are calmer and were nearer launch games and proper comparisons will be made.
How is this the thread that spoiled the last of us for me. Fucking prick.

Nice that you added spoiler tags. Too late for me though.

Damn internet keeps spoiling things for me. I was reading a cast list for the movie Oblivion and the cast list spoiled a twist in the movie. A fucking cast list. Why would a cast list be mentioning spoilers.

Thank goodness you guys spoiler tagged that for me. I haven't finished TLoU yet and if I had gotten that spoiled, I might have gotten banned tonight.

What have you done....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still faster memory. Still a superior GPU.

Not seeing the issue.

I may be totally off base, but here's how I had it broken down in my mind.

CPU's are weak laptop versions, so more processing was going to be off loaded.

PS4 - off loaded to the gpu and excess ram.
One - off loaded to the cloud.

Now ps4 doesn't have that excess ram, so we potentially have gaming overhead (p2p hosting, ai, lighting) eating into the already almost equal ram pool. So ps4 may have faster, but less ram. While the xbox has more, but slower ram + that eSRAM stuff. I don't know how this really translates to gaming, but it doesn't feel like the slam dunk it was yesterday.

Did you read this?

Yeah, that shinobi post makes a lot of sense.
Fast ram does make a difference, 4.5gb dedicated to games, another 1gb if developers want it, 1.5gb being used currently for the OS, another 1gb locked for the OS for new features.

PS4 - off loaded to the gpu and excess ram.
One - off loaded to the cloud.

god, that microsoft thing really worked for some people.

MS came out pre-E3 and right from the off, said that the XB1 was not just about the games, but also about:

"TV! TV! TV! TV! SPORTS! TV! SPORTS!".

And, they threw the gamers a bone, "CALL OF DUTY DOG!"

The response? They were panned for allocating hardware resources to something other then games. Personally I'd thought it was a smart move. Still do, I've had my XB1 on pre-order for months. I want more than a games machine sitting under my TV for next-gen.

Now, Sony (wisely I'd say) are doing the same - allocating hardware and memory so the PS4 too can (potentially) do:

"TV! TV! TV! TV! SPORTS! TV! SPORTS!"

....and anything else that becomes popular over the lifetime of the console.

The response? A near-collective shrug of the shoulders and "No big deal, nothing has changed here."

That's.....interesting.

If Sony are guilty of anything, its not coming out before now and telling people that its not just about the games for PS4. Either way. 5 to 5.5Gb of RAM should be enough for some decent games, regardless of what console you buy.

It also means that Sony can now go toe-to-toe with MS for the non-game features. That's good, for everyone. Nothing wrong with competition.

And where are you getting this crap from? Some how using RAM for the OS = TV/SPORTs? or were you under the impression somehow that sony would not have any apps on the PS4? That there would be no netflix, hulu and whatever else is available on PS3/Vita and that having that some how makes the focus not games?

You guys, that isn't really a proper spoiler of The Last of Us, not some end game story revelation or anything like that. It's essentially the premise of the game, so don't worry if you read it. It would be like saying "Assassin's Creed is in a computer program."

No, sir. Not the way it works.

That is a pretty big spoiler. It is revealed somewhere around 1/3rd of the game. I don't care if your dumb ass does not believe it's not a spoiler.

Well PS4 does still have a GPU that's 50% more powerful than Xbox One. I'm curious to see how much difference that actually makes in the games. Launch titles don't seem to show much of a difference if any, though.

Ho Come on !!! two games spoiled on a few minutes....

IF YOU JUST GOT SPOILED FROM THAT PREVIOUSLY UNMARKED THE LAST OF US SPOILER AND ARE KIND OF UPSET, I SUGGEST YOU READ THIS (it relates to the spoiler and will probably make you feel better):

You find out that Ellie is infected earlyish on in the game... I'd say in the first 15-20% of it. So it's annoying that he posted that, as I hate spoilers just as much as anyone else, but it's not a game-changing Sixth Sense level spoiler.

I mean for the likes of Titan or any other card with a quantity of GDDR5 close to the PS4. $1000 for the whole package isn't that much since you're buying something to be used for more than playing games. But for someone who wants games alone with similar performance at a fraction of the cost, the PS4 is the perfect alternative to a gaming PC.

For now, anyway.

Dat 60 fps feeling, right?.

1) How many people truly care for 60fps outside of enthusiasts who are likely to buy a gaming PC anyway?
2) How many PS4 games have you sampled so far?

You can't just offload GPU tasks to memory. That's not how memory works... The RAM doesn't actually calculate anything.

All of the prior advantages we knew about are still there. The only difference is devs can't be as sloppy with their memory management for a little while until Sony reduces the memory footprint of the OS. The Xbone having an extra 512 mbs of slow ass DDR3 available doesn't really do anything to level the playing field.

Did you read this?
This is not what Eurogamer said though. It puts the thing way more into perspective that Sony is just future-proofing and not that the OS is allocating 3.5 GB of RAM just because. The numbers are the same, but not the message. Eurogamer made it sound like that this is bad news. Shinobi's post and that of the other insiders are saying that Sony is just playing it strategic and devs will get all the RAM they need over time, because they don't need it right now. Point is, Eurogamer is fishing for hits yet again by making the story more dramatic, while the actual thing happening is mostly positive and reasonable.

No worries, guys, you find that out almost right away in TLOU... There's another 20 hours of gameplay after that.

On topic, good to see Sony leaving some breathing room in the early going while more than 5 gigs may not be very useful anyway.

I still find it amusing that just days ago was the whole "we have more RAM than we know what to do with" and somehow people tried to spin THAT as a negative, now they want to spin this one.

You said it's not important other than a dick measuring contest. Which is exactly what people have been using the theoretical 7gb as.

Which is why this news hurts them so.

I'm really shocked you're this confused.

Mabe now those select dick wavers can stay out of X1 threads and stop shitting them up with the OS ram thing? Hope for nice things...

Hi. My name is miDnIghtEr20C. And I have just had The Last of Us spoiled for me.

Nice to me.

It really depends on how you look at it. And honestly, after all the complaints about the PS3's OS being laggy/slow (though I honestly never really experienced lag outside of trophy sync) I'm not surprised they're future-proofing like this.

Whichever way the spin goes, both stories say 4.5-5.5GB is available which is different than the 7GB people assumed would be available. That's all I'm getting at.

After asking personal contacts about the situation, I have deduced the following:

1. The RAM situation on PS4 is the most ideal form imaginable.
2. Sony has provided a huge amount of quality RAM.
3. RAM allocations for future OS improvements are in place for any unaccounted for additions that may require OS to bloat in the future.
4. No one developer has argued that there isn't enough RAM. Not a single one.

5. "If a developer cannot figure out what to do with 5+ GBs of RAM; he should quit his day job."

This is all I can contribute, and if some of you feel like cutting each other's throats because those 3 GB will not be available on day 1; I don't know what to tell you. I don't have hard numbers, but I am told to ignore the pessimism because reality is far from what the picture Apocalypse-GAF is painting.

As for the Apocalypse-GAF: continue ignoring Verrendus, famourmortimer, I, and Bruceleeroy. I'm out ya'll :).

Making assumptions about something that was never officially addressed and then getting mad about it is their own damn fault.

Interesting thread title. Nothing to see here.
If this was a Xbox One story, I'm sure the thread title would be clearly spelled out. Word for word. And more than likely bolded!

I think the whole story would only make sense if MSFT's TvTvTv presentation would have been a huge success and if there would have been a big outcry that Sony doesn't support such things. In this case I'd understand that they want to catch up and add those features too.

In reality it was completely the other way around. The whole Internet started to complain about MSFT'S attempt and Sony was praised into heaven for concentrating on a gaming machine. Everything just told them they're on the right track. Why would they try to catch up on something that they can clearly see is not wanted.

After all they have done until now it just doesn't make any sense. It's like they would now trash the dual shock 4 after all the praise and add a pad with touch screen similar to Wii U's because they see how bad it's selling.
