F'DUPTON 3: Back in the Tub with 5.0/5.5/6/7/several Inches of RAM-Flavoured Water

If it is like this, whats the problem actually?! It'll be years before they reach the ceiling on the ram. The OS footprint will shrink due to optimizations and more ram will be available for games. The same happened on the PS3, reducing the footprint from 120MB to 50MB. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/70mb-of-additional-ram-unlocked-for-ps3-developers/

Its actually one of the reasons later gen PS3 games look better than early gen games.

Well, it's not really confirmed, i was just pointing out to him that his possibility of 2.5gb max can end up being true. Seems that DF didn't get it right the first time, and everyone says different things.

It went from 5.5 with 1 flexible gig to 4.5 and 512Mb?

fuck you Sony I thought this was supposed to be a game console. I'm buying a wiiu.
lol

It is quite telling because DF never have the fact infomation. Only word from the other, which could be not stable information at all.

I'm betting DF will update tomorrow as well.

It's kind of funny that all of these memory threads are coming up right now, when I was thinking about cancelling my pre-ordered PS4.

I agree, they don't need to make a statement, but they have been very upfront about all things PS4 and been very quick to correct any misreporting or errors in reporting, so if they suddenly decide to not comment on this/clear up any misreporting, it pretty much confirms the story.

does it matter in the long run? Not really. Just like MS, Sony are taking sensible steps to ensure their OS has enough ram for future proofing and ensure that we aren't left with slow, laggy messes like we are now. Sony especially will be more aggressive on this front after this generation saw them left behind in terms of features. They won't allow that to happen again and ultimately it benefits us the most. If they can steal/borrow cool features from MS and vice versa, the consumer wins.

The only way this (again, if true) could be construed as bad news is if Sony ignored developer's input and went off and carved a huge chunk of RAM out on the PS4 for use by their OS.

Remember, Sony has been completely transparent with their developers about the PS4's architecture since day one. You would think that any decision involving memory allocation has been ok'd by developers. You know the people who actually make the games as opposed to bloggers like Richard Leadbetter.

I see Jonathon Blow has systematically deleted all his own tweets referring to the witness using 5GB

Except he hasn't. Why lie?

You can not access 8 gigs of ram instantaneously There is a reason pc gpus are only n ow moving up to 4 gigs with 2 gigs still standard.

Only thing 8 gigs of ram would matter in a game is for something like being able to load most of skyrim into ram and flying a f 15 through the world with no pop in.

4.5 is still a "holy shit" amount of ram for a console.

I'm all about next gen spec talk, and I'm honestly at a loss for why this is such a big deal to some people. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind these numbers will change over the next year. There is no way they need 3.5 gigs for their OS. This is common sense people.

DRM, they waited weeks to comment on.

Why am I even joining this carnival of stupid?

The thing is, I think MS have actually justified why they're reserving 3GB for OS and OS related functions. They've actually demonstrated multitasking with IE, skype, tv etc as well as Kinect. and with that, the audience has come to an understanding of MS's intentions with X1.

Whereas Sony have shown nothing but a youtube video that has scarcely indicated anything significant for a large reservation.

I also find it hilarious people believe Sony are at their beck and call to respond to anything they want clarified. They never gave figures for OS reservations, why should they start now when all of it is still in flux?

I'm not sure we should look into Jonathan Blow's Tweets, there's no telling when he deleted them is there? Could've been before this.

EDIT: Lol debunked.

The overreactions are only happening because of the initial circle jerking and fanboy garbage that took place when 8GB Of GDDR5 was initially revealed. Then the trolls took a shit on the Xbox One and its 5/3 split.

Those same folks clearly feel like they have a bit of egg on their face.

4.5GB (5) is still a metric fucktonne of RAM for gaming. Wish people would realize that.

I'm glad both these companies are allocating so much RAM to the OS. Wish Nintendo had done the same. A true multitasking OS needs a lot of RAM.

this. why is that so hard for people to understand?

The information with 4.5 GB + 512MB was from a beyond3D member, and he forwarded this to Eurogamer:

http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1769120&postcount=2503

So.... 4.5 gb. Amazing, almost 50%! The gig is up Sony. So disappointing.

It's at least 5GB, the same amount as the Xbox. Which is completely fine, because 99% of all games in the first two years won't need more RAM.

this. why is that so hard for people to understand?

To be honest, I can understand if some people were angry that Xbox had 5GB and PS4 was rumored to have 7GB, because all games will target 5GB.

Only 4.5gb + 512 flex available? What the hell are devs going to make with that? 16 bit platformers?
Next gen is dead, pre-order cancelled. I am retreating into my bunker until next-next-gen when Sony gets their shit together.

well considering people are cumming in their pants to dig at him over these comments, I wouldn't blame him if he did delete them after the internet has lost it's mind yesterday/today. Who wants to deal with that shit.

Jonathan Blow is a whny bitch. All that cash he took from Sony has fckued his MS comments up. Poor boy

The logical element missing in the EuroGamer article that people should be talking about is that an x86 CPU at present can't have more than 8gb GDDR5, due to 256bit architecture limitations. You can only have so many 4gbit chipsets(I think this is what PS4 has). New higher capacity 8gbit chipset have yet to come to market. This means you can't have 4gb for only tools on dev kits.

It means it's physically impossible to debug the game without having tools to make it run, so on retail prints of the game they'll have the ram available, but at present have no way to develop for it.

Microsoft doesn't have this problem.
