Indie Games [August] Now Voting - Post 937!

Race the Sun

I already knew this game from the web based early alpha. It's nice to see some changes, like the less amount of "Tris" that you need to reach the next multiplier and different scenery from the alpha version.
Other nice point is the world, it is randomized every 24h and has the focus on you getting the highest score on the score boards.

For some strange reason the game don't work in windowed mode it become totally messy with everything upside down and I can't see the ship.

That Steam thread moves way too fast. I know it's not an indie but mind if I ask about Morrowind here?

About how big is the world, does the combat have any tactical or strategic elements, and are expansions areas added seamless to the world (as opposed to having to access them through a menu)?

Expansions are added via portals/house/dungeon entrances. The world is huge, the combat has some strategic elements to it considering you need to properly choose your skills/weapons but its no Dark Souls either.

Also: After doing some research on it for about 1 hour, I wasnt able to find a proper Indie Games podcast that doesnt just talk about the heavy Indie hitters. Urge to think about my own podcast rising. Maybe I can do a short 15 minute clip to see whether my voice actually works for that kind of stuff and whether I can find something interesting to say about these games. Sorta mid-term project idea. We'll see.

Bossfight with Dullahan.

Seems like a good idea to fight an enemy wielding a giant sword using only a torch. xD

I'm curious how the combat plays in your game, do you lose too much if you decide to run away from the enemies instead confronting them?

Combat in Morrowind is a bit outdated, if I remember well there are some kind of "dice rolls" (lacking a better definition) to see if you can hit an enemy or not. The visuals also are outdated but there are some mods that revamp the landscapes and the visuals.

Interested by this too. How does combat work with only a torch?

Personally, I would prefer for Indie games to be shown in a Youtube video series over a podcast.

For example, I see this

isKzsYIQTiaac.gif

and I'm immediately sold and want to try this. If you told me "A platformer that's like really messed up hard," then I really wouldn't see what the big deal is. I played Super Meat Boy already.

It's simple, swing your torch at enemies at the right time. You can kill most enemies in one or two hits, but the challenge lies in your positioning and timing. You don't have a lot of health, so making a mistake is very dangerous.

Other than the bossfights and one particular foe, you should be able to even finish the game without attacking any enemies.

You can see some combat here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo0ZsWgXPR4

I saw a Cloudberry Kingdom GIF, this game is for masochysts
Cloudberry+Kingdom+difficulty.gif

Gods Will be watching is a nice game and worth your time.
lol That looks amazing and the way everything flows is so beautiful but for my health and sanity I would never put myself through that.

I would love to try some earlier levels though.

Love the sound of that. As a huge fan of the Demons' and Dark Souls, any combat where you have to cautious and careful is right up my alley

And the atmoshere is that trailer was amazing. Near pitch blackness + creepy things in the darkness = really fucking scary. I'd take that kind of horror over jump scares and monster closets any day

Youtube comment presentations are one thing, but others prefer game discussions. We had a few people in the last thread that voiced their interest in such a podcast. People prefer different things, but it shouldnt be that hard to make a podcast and offer a video "version" with gameplay of the games that are currently being talked about. One could even use a video or the gameplay as a foundation for the discussion on certain issues. But thats far off, first off I'll see whether I can do it at all. No use in discussing the scope and "extras" yet.

If the tests go well I'd be down for donating some money for gear.

Thanks for the offer. I have a few other major things on my plate rather soonish (becoming uncle and helping my sister beginning next week first and foremost), but I'll keep that idea in mind.

This game...

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

As far I understand the levels are randomized right?
Yup, infinite randomly generated levels

We've spent years teaching our level design AI how to make levels at just the right difficulty for every player. No matter how good you get, the AI will always serve up another level that can challenge your skills.

No matter how hard the levels get, they are always possible. The AI takes care to design levels that can always be beat.
In other words, it's the Warning Forever of platformers :)

If anyone is curious about how an Indie game looks like that I am/was hostile towards:

Fray:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=39878405&postcount=11902

A few highlights:
- The game is unbelievably bad optimized and runs like shit no matter the PC configuration
- The game has 120 seconds turns in its slowest setting, which is actually needed if you properly want to play the game. But for beginners it makes the game unplayable. Additionally: if you end your turn faster, you'll get a fighting bonus. No time to play/train. This game is crazy beginner hostile.
- Load times between turns are horrible. Load times everywhere. Game stuck on the last turn for 10-15 seconds just to have the end screen pop up.
- And to add insult to injury, their main selling point: graphics. The awesome style in the trailer looks in fact... HORRIBLE ingame.

Clear recommendation: Don't go near this game. EVER. And NO, not even in a sale.

That was shortly after launch, so I should revisit the game sometime to see whether my points still stand.

NIce. I like that kind of combat where strategy and positioning matters.

Played another game:

Reminds me of Binding of Isaac. Unfortunately I can't say more about the game, because the part where you need to die in the tutorial the game becomes unplayable in my browser. :(

Ah...Teleglitch

Finally made it to Level 2. And then I died.

It may not look like much, but the gameplay, the tension of the unknown, the joy of finding a new gun or a medkit, is fantastic. When you enter a room with two shotgun rounds, 25 health, and one explosive, and a horde of mutants and zombies rush out of the area where you can't see and you just turn and flee the other way...it's worth every penny

I think that's what I like about roguelikes. Stealth games are unique because you have to outsmart and outmaneuver the enemy, and roguelikes are unique because half the time all you can is fucking run and hope for the best. You're always at a disadvantage, every bullet counts, every decision is life or death

i think you're the perfect person for an indie podcast. Def test it out. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.

Wow. If that level of creativity in Papo & Yo keeps up, this will be the next game I'll shout about.

Our second game Servo or Servo Swarm (placeholder background and HUD), which is a byproduct born from what we've learned from our third title in production.

Nono and the Cursed Treasure will be released for PC mid 2012

Time schedule is a bitch, yeah. :p That being said, where is it going to be released and what price?

Yeah, it's been pretty rough but things are getting better while production is becoming a lot smoother.

All that is undecided but for now probably just on our own site and maybe $3-$5.

Thought I would start early to make sure I get through all the games this month.

Impressions:

1000 Amps
Very enjoyable little platform puzzler. Nice mix of memory and lateral thinking required to progress with this kinda funky early mobile phone game style graphics.
4/5

Aaron Steed's Ending
Potentially should be good and I kinda applaud what it tries to do, but I just found this game profoundly dull. Stripping back all the RPG elements of a roguelike and their just isn't a lot left.
2/5

Against the Wall
If I reviewed this game after like 2 minutes of play, it would be a 2/5. Your job is to ascend up the side of a white wall by using a magic gun pole type thing to pull out individual bricks to create steps. The first few minutes were fairly boring and then I fell off for the first time and the game managed to generate this amazing level of roller coaster style panic and vertigo in me which took me a little by surprise. The game does a great job creating a sense of scale which makes you fairly panicky which makes the fairly mundane task of pulling blocks out of this wall really exciting. Real cool little game and unless this is a hell of a good month I am likely to vote for it in the final week.
5/5

Bokida
Not a lot to say really. An amusing and impressive toy but once I made made a block, sliced it into tiny pieces and then force pushed it away I couldn't see any deeper potential. Not gonna score it because their is nothing to really gauge it against, but if I did I would have knocked it down once because the thing kept crashing my browser when I tried to exit. Probably the faults on my end TBH.

In Against The Wall, how far have you gone? There are different kinds of blocks that add some urgency and platformer-ish to the game. I'm the kind of gamer who loves exploring so I just get a kick out of reaching new structures on the wall

I featured Crypt Run on my indie channel and at first I had the same problem where the camera went all goofy when I went to the world of the dead. In the end I used another browser and it went perfectly.

Yes. Yes it is. Is this your first time playing? Great replay value too. Hard difficulty adds obstacles to every level to make it harder and there's a challenge mode

For those who have played Papers, Please, how complex does it get as the game goes on? Haven't played the free demo that much, got up to when you get the tool to inspect two pieces of information

The demo was super easy, some people missed that they can use the documents, but it really wasnt an issue. Curious to see whether the full game will be more challenging.

And yeah, first time playing Pid. Currently catching up with some quick impressions for the Steam Indies I didnt play yet. I'll probably post a big list of short impressions once I am done with them.

Put a couple of hours into it, great art style and atmosphere. If you think level 2 is bad, wait until you get to level 3.

Started playing Aquaria for about an hour today. I love the art style and the music is super chill. I love exploration so this game is right up my alley, can't wait to delve a little deeper into it.

Stumbled across this. I almost overlooked the game until I started reading the PC Gamer article...

Zafehouse Diaries
Site | Greenlight
Stuck in a remote, abandoned town, you must lead five survivors with conflicting motivations, fragile relationships and fiery prejudices to safety from the roving undead. A sophisticated procedural engine generates new survivors, towns and content so every adventure is a different experience, and you can use built-in editors to add real people and locations to the game.

This is the PC Gamer article that caught me attention because of stuff like this:

I try starting a rumor, which is something I can do to mend relationships. Everyone is hating on one survivor, Kelsey, so I make up some lie and let the others digest it, hoping it will improve their disposition. I spread some gossip that Kelsey wrote a book. Since Vincent isn’t comfortable around women, I make the book about a man. Since Maria doesn’t like older people, I make it about a young man. Since Stephen, for some reason, has a beef with the middle-class, I make it about a poor young man. I can’t remember why Joe likes the book, but it’s probably because the book is the opposite of something he hates for no real reason. At any rate, everyone is a bit happier,

Keep in mind, no one has actually read the book. They just heard a rumor whispered to them by their invisible psychologist. Something else to keep in mind: they all die a short time later because of zombies, who are not impressed with the fake book at all.

Yeah, ditto here too on the exploration point. I reached the point after the 'tree' you ride up on. So I've encountered the green, red and grey blocks.

Definitely a game I'll stick with. The artstyle has a really interesting KRZ vibe and the puzzle mechanic they just introduced was pretty great too. Guys, if games like this and Papo release, you have the official permission to hit me over the head if I don't play them on launch. Marvellous games.

Just finished Kentucky Route Zero Act 2.

So much goddamn variety. Just no other adventure game quite like it. The diorama feel, when it happens is to die for. Can't even pin a single perspective on it (top-down, 2D, 3D). By not having puzzles for such a game, they've gone full steam ahead on brilliant illusionary tricks and developing the characters along the way as you see fit. I don't even know how the hell they pull some of the visuals.
