Microsoft is in a weak position strategically.

'Everyone' knows it, general sentiment seems to be against them.

A controversial/contrarian opinion piece attracts more interest than a 'go with the flow one'.

Look at this way, Microsoft is now complying and matching most of Sony's moves when it comes to next gen policy and next gen development. Microsoft hasn't put faith or a large amount of will behind their own strategies, Sony keeps positioning itself as the dictator of what next gen should be and why.

Following foot steps instead of treading in your own path in the short term seems to lead to some sort of downfall or defeat. Might not be a large or catastrophic defeat, but a defeat nonetheless.

There's no "console war". What's up with these writers? It shouldn't be PS4 vs Xbox One. It should be PS4 and Xbox One vs everything else. While it's too early to predict which console will sell more, I think both of them will do really well.

Right now, I think the lower price of the PS4 will definitely help the console when it comes to market penetration. Microsoft can counter this by spending a lot on marketing, but it's not going to be so easy. I think the last two points (online infrastructure and entertainment hub) aren't really that great. In fact only the first point makes sense; very poor article overall.

didn't realize this was the same thread with the idiottic clickbait bullet point list about why XBone is better than PS4

And yeah I'll take Edge's advice over this dipshit.

Clever. Made me open this thread twice now for different reasons, but I got a laugh out of it each time so I don't mind. :D

How does the first point (#4) make any sense? The XBO's inferior hardware specs will help it win? That's just ridiculous. If it was cheaper because of those inferior specs, sure, but that's not the case.

Ahahahah love the title change, when i looks at my subscriptions and saw it at the top, I was like I never post in a thread with such a name but once I clicked it I know why. lol

XONE absolutely could win this time round. To count MS out is foolish, and to arrogantly assume PS4 will take it all is even more foolish.

If it stays that way. MS will be looking very, very closely at pre-order numbers versus PS4.

I could see Xbox One dropping to $399 still - there's at least two big conferences to go where MS will feel the need to pull out all the stops and regain momentum (Gamescom, TGS).

I don't really see MS bringing much to TSG, they'll bring something but probably nothing exciting.

4. PS4 is too effeminate so real men will not want to admit to owning one.
3. Microsoft is a brand associated with go getters like Bill Gates and everyone wants to associate with winners.
2. Cloud computing is so amazing and advanced that nobody really understands why it is any good at all which is a huge selling point.
1. Nobody cares about what people on the internet think literally no company wants to try get reddit or twitter talking well about their product. It's all about real people. Yeah!

Nobody is saying they couldn't win (even though it looks highly unlikely at this point). What people are saying is that the reasons presented in this article are mostly completely ridiculous, or even plain false.

I haven't read the article (and I'm not planning to), but I gather that the point is that most customers won't care about hardware spec numbers, and if the difference in practice is negligible to said customers, then the XBO's brand recognition (as perceived by the article author, who I assume is an American) will allow it to outsell the PS4 in the long run.

I think what he's trying to say is that the mass market audience don't really care a lot about specs, which is true to some extent.

Eh, I do not agree wholly with his points. Yet, Xbox One starts its war against PS4 in a much better position than Xbox 360 did.

At the time Sony had several very important gaming exclusives (or games perceived as such), such as:
- Final Fantasy
- Metal Gear
- Grand Theft Auto (remember the Xbox editions coming out like 6 months later?)
- Kingdom Hearts
- Resident Evil
- Not to mention a bunch of "secondary", yet representative ex-Sony-exclusives

Now, one by one, Microsoft grabbed these series and brought it on the console, de facto aligning the third-party production of the two console.

I'm not expecting huge surprises in this sense, like for instance an exclusive Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty on either console.

So, a much better starting position for Xbox One, something which does not seem very aknowledged in gaming forums.

No way is Microsoft in a better starting position then they were last gen. With the 360 Microsoft was the first on the market and they were significantly cheaper then the PS3. Xbox Live was considered a value because there were no consoles that did online like that. Sony also were acting like assholes out the gate. None of these remain true with the new consoles.

I suppose I meant slightly better graphics on the PS4. But all joking aside, Xbox One's smart matching, multitasking while waiting for multiplayer games to fill up, and dedicated servers are some of the reasons I'm more excited for the Xbox One over the PS4.

My console decision will come down to the wire though, there's still plenty of time for Microsoft or Sony to win my dollars.
But I'll eventually buy both anyway.

Reading the article he only seems to care about the US. The rest of the world is irrelevant to him. So he's basing that entire point of the article around the 360 outselling the other consoles in the US in recent years. That just shows you how much of a mess his points are.

Easier to rile up nationalism and xenophobia this way.

You think PS4 won't be able to multitask? Vita does that already. And i'm pretty sure dedicated servers have been used for console games for years already. Gears3 and KZ2 for example.

But then he should have said "XBO's brand recognition will help it outsell the PS4 (in the US) despite its weaker specs". That's not what he said. This was supposed to be a list of reasons why the XBO could win the generation, and he used the PS4's superior specs as one of them. Again, ridiculous.

I think what he's trying to say is that the mass market audience don't really care a lot about specs, which is true to some extent.

Yes, but it's still a complete non-reason for why the XBO could win, it's just saying that its inferior specs might not necessarily mean it will lose. So it's absolutely useless in this list of his.

Here's an interesting article from Betanews, the author explains why he believes that XBO will be the winner in the next generation battle:

http://betanews.com/2013/08/03/four-big-reasons-xbox-one-not-ps4-will-win-over-the-masses/

The four reasons:

4. Hardware Specs Alone Won't Win a Console War
3. Toppling the Leading Incumbent is Easier Said than Done
2. Microsoft's Online Gaming Backbone Puts Sony (and Nintendo) to Shame
1. Modern Consoles Are Entertainment Hubs -- And the Numbers Prove It

Fucking Stupid. Also, What`s Up With All the Words Starting With The Capital Letters?

Depends on what you're looking for. If you just want slightly shinier graphics, sure. If you're also looking for strong media functionality then a case can be made for the Xbox.

PS4 support every media format available, you.can have Netflix, Hulu...etc.

I don't know what are those media functions that are only available to X1? Watching TV? No, Playing BD? No.....Please enlighten me with X1 theoretical media superiority.

I wonder if some people will be burnt by Kinect 1?
They've spent a lot of money on it not too long ago and it's useless and probably collecting dust for most people.
Even if Kinect 2 is a big improvement, which I don't doubt, people still might not want to invest in another Kinect. MS has not shown many compelling advantages yet that make it a must have device. I'm not even talking about games outside of the usual suspects à la Kinect Sports.

The whole dedicated servers(cloud) have been available to anyone and everyone, if only they wanted to use them. MS marketing hubris sometimes gets really annoying.

I mean that Microsoft has a system in place for matchmaking while you're doing other things on the console. Sure, Sony might do something similar at some point, but we haven't heard about that from them yet.

And our optimistic view on the dedicated servers for Xbox One games is that it'll be for every Xbox One multiplayer game. And it's being provided by Microsoft itself so you don't have to worry about the servers going down in a couple of years. Unless Microsoft hasn't told us everything about this yet; for example we don't know how much it'll cost developers (but presumably it'll be a lot cheaper than publishers/developers buying/maintaining their own servers).

Yep, to me Microsoft is still in a better position in comparison to the Xbox 360 launch. Also, at that time PlayStation 3 had an extra selling point in the Blu Ray drive, something which is not repeating with PlayStation 4.
