Is $11k and a paid off car enough to move to Austin and get a start there?

I came to Austin with 4k and no car and dicked around for 3 months without even looking for a job. I only paid $250 on rent though, so it depends if you have roommates to split expenses with. Btw that did not work out well for me, had to get a job at PetSmart just to hold me over to a real job.

I have lived in San Antonio the last 3 months though, because my girfriend lives there, her old roommate ditched her, and she needed help with rent. Which is fine but I don't think she's gonna let me go back now that she's had a taste of the non-long-distance life. :(

Tell me about it. My rent just got raised for the second year in a row after five years of no increases :(

The houses in the neighborhood next to me keep going up and up and up... I'm nowhere near the center of town either.

Yeah, it's nuts. I'm saving up 300k via stock ETFs over the next 10 years. If the housing market gets completely irrational, ie today's 250k houses are 500k, I'm just going to move somewhere where 300k is still 300k and get a different job.

Whoever owns those quarries in the north needs to sell and build houses for cheap. Direct access to Mopac would be nice. Otherwise I'll probably do Cedar Park to 45 to Mopac.

I have 2 tickets to New Order if anyone is interested. Looks like they're going for well over $100 on average on Stubhub and CL but I'll sell for closer to face value. The show is on Friday night at the Austin Music Hall.

So Austin's first authentic izakaya has opened up at 183 and Burnet Rd., where old Tokyo Steakhouse used to be.

This gaffer may or may not work there.

Check it out, the soft opening is under way. No sushi, but the miso ramen is terrific -- it's a much lighter broth than the typical Austinite tonkotsu. The other dishes are great too, particularly the hasami age, kimchee fried rice, and seapaccio. The sake bar is nothing to slouch at, either.

The Dojo is open real late, too, and in fact caters to the after-work crowd. I hope a few gaffers here check it out.

We were there on Thursday. bf was a little disappointed at the prices, but you get what you pay for.

He was also disappointed at the lack of chicken nonkotsu, but I have no problem with that ;)

So who here will be in Austin during ACL Weekend One?

October 4th, 5th, and 6th I will be there.

We should all get together and get some pizza or somethin'! Doesn't have to be in the festival itself since not everyone will have a ticket.

My wife and I are doing the first weekend and also have tickets to Fun Fun Fun Fest. Would be happy to meet up in or around either fest.

Another San Antonio GAFFER here. I haven't followed this thread very well, are there any definitive plans yet?

Is the Austin Fry's Electronics closing?

My wife and I were in the store tonight and there were empty shelves in every department. This didn't look like remodeling or rearranging, it was like they just weren't restocking anything.

More so than usual? It would be huge if they are.

This belongs on craigslist but I'm sure GAFfers are cooler than random people on there so I'll try here first :p

I'm moving back to Austin next month, but I may be in a situation where I need a temporary place to stay as I wait for my roommates to get an apartment set. Beginning August 20 or so it would be a few days up to two weeks, it's too soon to say at the moment, I'm just looking for options in advance. I would of course pay a portion of the rent for my time. Also I would have most of my possessions stored elsewhere, it would mainly just be me, my computer and some clothes. I work from home so I would be there a lot, but I am very busy on artwork commissions, so I wouldn't be bustling about much. So if you're at all interested in getting a little bit of help on the rent next month, shoot me a PM. :)

Anyone here works at Samsung or knows people that do? I currently work in a Fab on the east coast and wouldn't mind moving there once I have more skill, as I have some family there.

Show of hands. Who would be interested in dropping by if I set up some shmups at Game Over Videogames's North Lamar location on say, a Sunday? Not this Sunday, but in the near future. I have enough titles on the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast to keep people busy for a few hours.

I used to hold meet ups there regularly but I haven't done so in a while. A few friends have been asking me when or if I am going to do it again.

I won't be in Austin for a couple more weeks but I'd definitely be interested in doing something like that in the future to meet some m8s.

Frank asked me about this the other day. I'd be down.

Exitplanetdust, lets get something going. Maybe we can do pinballz as well? I can talk to owner and see if he can do a group special for a site that gets a lot of word out :)
That sounds good. Or even just a migration down the street when we're done at Game Over. I've done this with past meets and it worked out well.

GO usually has a TV or two they let people use and I picked up a 13" PVM I can bring with me (anyone good at calibrating these things?). My iCade will be here sometime next week... IOS shmups, why not.

I will send the owner of Game Over an email this weekend to get a feel for things.

I'm going to be in Austin next week for training. Other than going to the Drafthouse for the Cornetto Trilogy on the 22nd, what else should I do? And what's the best way to get to the Drafthouse? I'm going to the 5:30 show at Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline and I'm staying at the Courtyard Austin Airport hotel, roughly 24 miles apart. Do I take a taxi, or one of those fancy new ride-share programs like Uber?

That's really far for a taxi... Around 25 miles one way, and taxis aren't cheap around here.

If you drive yourself it's just a straight shoot up 183.

I don't have the travel funds for a rental car and it seems silly to rent a car for one day.

:(

There really isn't much of a choice.. a taxi would honestly set you back an insane price -- probably more than you'd spend on a rental car for a day. There IS a bus system though and it looks like you could take it from your hotel there for only $3.75 but it'd take about 2 hours each way. There's a Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane that would be a much more manageable distance but I haven't seen what they're doing about the Cornetto Trilogy to be honest. The South Lamar temporary closure really fucked things up. :(

The showing would end too late to take advantage of the bus. Renting a car really is the only way to go unless he hitches a ride.

Excellent point. If I were going I'd be happy to help out but that Lakeline theatre is a trek that I will never make at least in my current location.

Damn...I'm starting to regret getting the ticket now. I tried to get one to the theater closest to where I'm staying but it sold out quickly. I figured I'd be good, I mean what's 20 miles? Apparently 3 hours of my time is what it is.

OK, an update for the "shmup" meet.

I got a reply back from the owner of Game Over. He says just about any Sunday in September should be fine.

Unfortunately, my job has entered a crunch period and I will be working 6 day weeks from now until mid September, taking away my free Sundays.

The other issue I run into is that I'm moving in October. From mid September until I move, I probably won't have any free time.

All of this puts me at early or mid November to set something up at Game Over as originally planned.

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns?

I was actually there yesterday.

I won nothing. But I drank a dos equis and played Rambo, so I guess it wasn't a total loss.
