Japanese newspaper rumor: redesigned Vita unveiling just before TGS

I see it in 2 possible directions.

1. They are betting big on the whole companion item to the PS4 thing they have been trying to preach lately

or
2. Costs have dropped enough that instead of doing a price cut and losing extra revenue they throw in a few cheap upgrades that wont hurt profitability and throw out the new model to retain pricepoint and kill off other model as it would drag down costs

Sounds like a combination of both, honestly.

It's a way to explore the PS4 controller avenue while still retaining profit margins.

A design matching PS4? weird. might have to buy another one tbh.

wonder how much current one sells for?

calling bullshit sadly. Nothing about that makes sense.

larger screen makes current games look worse and unlike a 3DS XL will not improve ergonomics drastically.

If the Vita had titles on the horizon for sept , they would be announced before this. Its way too late to just start marketing games coming out in less than a month.

Everyone in the know has hinted that Sony considers the Vita profitable enough for what it is, but not worth the investment of teams and resources to improve its situation. One or two big games a quarter, with a ton of indie and downloadable titles are the best we can hope for.

At last

If this is indeed the new model, I have to say that the shoulder buttons look a tad uncomfortable to reach.

Launching before TGS sounds like a terrible idea to me. Immediately after with a bunch of game announcements to build hype is the way to go.

Sounds like a combination of both, honestly.

I imagine they also see it as a way to squeeze in another round of shipments to keep the Vita retail section alive in America, at least until they can see if the PS4 companion angle can bare some fruit.

Do something about memory sticks and I'm in. I do find it funny that I had playstation plus for a grand total of 1 month and got like half of the Vita games I want on it.

But will it have a third stick?
Yeah sure why not.

... And man, I'd an even nicer one, but I have to admit that's probably TOO big. The current screen size is pretty good, and it's not like the 3DS where it felt suffocatingly small, the opposite if anything. Though I guess when it comes to upgrades it's kind of like going from DS to DSi for PSP games, whereas this would be the nice jumbo edition for everything.

I'd be cool with a bigger display. TV out is my most wanted feature too, so I hope they get that on the go.

Better be white on day one this time.

Why would they use Samsung screens instead of their own triluminos tech that they use for their TVs, laptops, and phones? Too expensive?

No, I think that's definitely the console. Because of what Verendus said, but also because for Sony, it needs to be. The games division has to be all about the PS4 this fall to ensure a strong start. They've said all the right things since February . It's time to put up or shut up.

It's not like a new Vita is groundshattering stuff (sorry Vita owners/enthusiasts) that would grab much attention from the PS4 launch.

The fact that they got the resolution wrong kinda makes me doubt this rumor as being legit.

Nah, that's how they're planning to keep the price down. It'll launch at $200, but they've added a permanent 10-pixel-tall bar on the top of the screen to stream in ad marquees.

Oh, hey, I check online about the Wii U Game Pad's screen size, and that's 6.2 inches. So, uhh, I guess that could double as a preview of sorts.

... I guess this Vita would be slimmer for the borders, but that definitely seems too big to be preferable for a handheld.

I don't get the extra ram part. Right now you can run Music Unlimited, Skype, Twitter or the web browser without closing out a game. What other apps do they even want to run at the same time that they can't currently?

And wouldn't the idea be to make it cheaper?

That's ridiculous.

That's my point though. Why bother? Why take people/manpower away from the PS4 launch? They in all likelihood won't do that.

I guess readying the Vita for PS4 off-screen features with the added RAM for use in the background.

Better hardware does not mean it will be more expensive, hardware becomes cheaper over time. And if they drop the price for the original model there would still be a price reduction in play, while keeping the new Vita at the current original model price.

Sounds like PS4 is getting a proper GamePad. Hopefully regular Vita's price will go down a bit and Sony will market both models. Beside games, I also really wouldn't mind some renovated focus on PS Mobile. It may well be the future of the handheld PlayStation platform if Sony does it right.

Vita XL will likely be on current Vita's price, if not cheaper. Larger pixels are less expensive, and they will essentially have to pay just for the additional RAM.

I think the Vita could use a price cut more than a redesign. Also Sony launching 2 new pieces of hardware in a year sounds kind of bogus to me.

2009:
PSPgo
PS3 Slim

2011:
PSP Street (Europe)
PSVita (Japan)

2012:
PSVita (North America and Europe)
PS3 Super Slim

This coud be a Japan-only model that they hope expands the potential Vita owner base, rather than replaces or competes with the existing model. It doesn't seem like the 3DS XL is taking away 3DS vanilla sales in that region so I can kind of see the logic. But if it's a Japan-only unit where's the UMD drive? Haha.
