Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Bog

Junior Ace
You guys understand Nintendo can probably make these things for pennies, right? It's pure profit. And since they lose money on every Wii U sold, this baby just off-set those losses.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
I can't. I actually can't.

The entire old guard of directors at Nintendo HAS to be fired next year.

-Iwata removed from CEO
-Tekada fired from Hardware Manager. WiiU, Wii Mini, now this abomination is THREE STRIKES.
-Miyamoto demoted from Software Management Head to small team

Just what the fuck. Removing the clamshell is just so powerfully stupid its dumbfounding.

Looks like a great product.

It's a clear attempt to head off a worrying trend--younger and younger kids wanting tablets and their parents obliging, combined with cheaper and cheaper quality tablets like the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini. There are 3 year olds who are playing iPad games right now. I know this is shocking for people who are 18-22 but when your friends start having kids, it's amazing. The kids are illiterate but figure out how to unlock it, launch the games they want, and play them. And sometimes even purchase.

This is about recapturing those kids. And also their parents--although parents are worried about kids breaking or scratching, that worry evaporates a little more with each passing month that tablets become more ubiquitous and accepted. This is Nintendo adopting more of the tablet form factor and lowering the cost of entry, and since young kids aren't supposed to use the 3D anyway no harm no foul (doesn't hurt that it's not a selling point).

They still face extreme barriers in terms of software pricing and the way the app market has disrupted it, as well as software variety issues... and I'd also add that even a kid can figure out that two cheap screens and a stylus ain't the same as one beautiful continuous screen with finger power, but I think it's a good move by Nintendo.

I expected to be quoted for crow or posterity after the reaction "what an ugly pile of shit" crowd calms down a little

I keep seeing this line of thought and it really doesn't make any sense.

They should have just had Pokemon 3DS bundles instead. It would have been more effective than this device if thats the best reason for its existence.

Nintendo 2DS Pokemon Bundle, and the 3DS Pokemon Bundle, the sales number will be good,

Dad has a 3DS(xl) buys pokemon, little timmy wants to play it, dad buys the 2ds pokemon bundle,

despite the weird shape, it looks like it could work for the kids, jsut they should have made it more rounder to emphasize the target audience, instead of the 2ds name just call it something like 3DSmini or something i dunno

also what Stumpokapow said above

Am I the only one that actually likes the form factor? If there is one thing I'm getting tired of its the calm shell and hinge on the 3DS. It just looks sturdy to me and I could care less for 3D personally. Is that screen size that of the original DS? I can't really tell. When I upgrade my XL to a better color someday I'm glad I have another option.

I really don't know about that, it's pretty much a 3DS Lite. The 3DS fanbase is mostly in japan and everyone and they're mother already own either a 3DS or a 3DS XL

That's insulting to the DSLite. Which a feat of design and engineering compared to the original DS.

This is just paving the way for the Nintendo QS, where they slap 2 2DS machines together in a clamshell and bam! Quad screens.

My little brother has an iPod touch.

The design is as stupid as a Vita or a PSP.

Or a Game Boy Advance.

Or a Game Boy Micro.

Game Boy Color.

Game Boy.

Game Gear.

I could go on...

Those aren't a big square.

I'm perplexed by this announcement. It looks so weird and it will create market confusion.

Here is the fact sheet. It has slightly better battery life than the normal 3DS and also the same screen size as that one.

In Soviet Nintendo we save cost by putting no hinge in 2DS in so that we can afford to put a a dual 3D camera to a 2D device so you can take 3D pics you can't view

PLEASE UNDERSTAND

I guess they'll push this and Pokemon a lot in october, should be a fun NPD thread lol

I'm perplexed by this announcement. It looks so weird and it will create market confusion.

#1 question come October "Can you play that new Pokemon game on this thing? Yes? I'll take 2 please."

I'm genuinely stunned, and I had to do a double/triple/quadruple take to make sure it wasn't some sort of April Fools-esque wind up.

Beyond terrible. The mind bogles.

I've had three dads tell me this answers the problem they were having about upgrading a DS to a 3DS for Pokemon.

you guys Nintendo is going to sell SO many of these.

...hate me...
People are so scared when they see something different of what they're expecting. It's hilarious.

It feels like the DS announcement all over again.

Calling it a 3DS Lite/Mini/Kid Edition or something also wouldn't be ideal, but it would be better in the face of a technology industry in general that typically does not move backwards in terms of numbering.

Having 3D in the name when it doesn't support 3D would be even more confusing.

The lower number positions it firmly below the 3DS, which is good.

I was going to pick up a 3ds for Pokemon, but I won't get this. I don't really care about 3d, this abomination isn't portable though.

Should have called it a No3DS.

  1. Looks like an ergonomic mess.
  2. Will create confusion for the average consumer.
  3. Being released just before the zerg rush of next-gen consoles.
  4. Kills the main selling-point of a device called the 3DS.
  5. Kills innovation from the developer side. As in: developer may have a great idea for 3D usage but has to factor in 2DS users as well.
  6. Effectively an admission of failure of the 3DS's 3D abilities: whether technically or as a USP.
  7. With the difficulties being faced with their existing hardware lineup, why release a new device?

I guess the eye strain and health & safety complaints must have forced this SKU through the pipeline. That and Nintendo's desperation to retain mindshare when the PS4 and Xbox One hit the marketplace.

I give this thing 1-2 years before it's discontinued. For the reasons listed above and more, it's a complete mess of an idea and a focal point of just how clueless Nintendo are at the moment.

Spot on. This thing looks and feels rushed.

The concept is awesome, but WTF, the design is so fucking ugly.
Im not buying this, they should just remove the 3D from the 3DS XL and booooom! Everyone wins.

A 2DS is not necessarily a bad thing. But that design? Why Not clam shell!? Also, I bet KI:U is unplayable on that setup.

Taking away the 3D for an entry-level version of the 3DS is kind of understandable I guess (even though that was the main selling point of the system in the first place), but DAMN this thing looks weird. What the hell kind of form factor is that? It looks like the least portable handheld Nintendo has ever made (unless you count the VB). Why lose the clamshell design? Just so weird.

WTF I believed it was a joke and then I learn it's real
But it's so damn ugly, the name is a joke, the ergo must be terrible and how the fuck would I put this in my pocket ? And still no second stick, are they serious ?

I'm soooo not buying it, if it wasn't 129$ it would be a PSP Go / GB Micro all over again, but because of the price maybe they will find people to buy that dirt cheap

What Nintendo has done with the DS brand.

Created a system with a 3D screen.
The 3D screen is the best one visually, hence developers will focus on it.
The touch screen has been relegated to red headed stepchild status.
With every system in 3D there was a hope that developers would use 3D for innovation.
Nintendo killed that possibility today.

I have a 3 year old who loved to play on my 3DS. I turn the 3D slider down and his mum doesnt want him to have a 3DS simply due to the 3D element.

However I couldnt get him this as no clamshell. I think he would break this.

I've never been happier to have sold off both my 3DSs. It's now readily apparent to me that Nintendo has no goddamn clue as to what the fuck they're doing anymore.

You should have tried playing games on those 3DSs you sold. They have some good ones I hear.

This thing has mono audio. I haven't seen that on a device since the 80's.

I don't think any kid would wanna walk around with that, you'd get bullied even by the kids who have Chinese 50 dollar Android tablets. I mean...look at it.

This thread is hilarious.
Nintendo releases a budget version of their portable system for kids. Grown men cry, yell and laugh at it on the internet.
