Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Here is the fact sheet. It has slightly better battery life than the normal 3DS and also the same screen size as that one.

What the hell? Have you ever seen an iPad, iPhone or Vita? What protects those?.

Since when has a iPad or iPhone been aimed at kids as a cheap portable gaming device.

The design is stupid. Plain stupid.

At least the 3DS and 3DS XL are still products people can buy.

Has any info about the battery life been mentioned? I think that could be a serious difference for a lot of users, especially ones that don't even like the 3D function. The price is decent, but without any improvement in battery life, I probably wouldn't rush to swap out my XL for this.

I don't get all the fad-hate. I think it looks more comfy than the XL, which was too top-heavy.

ANYTHING other than the XL. Anything (Yes, I do own one. Sadly)

I understand removing the 3D -- it really isn't the draw of the system anymore so it's a good cost-cutting idea. Not sure about the loss of the clambshell design though. That makes it less portable and the form factor here looks just plain weird.

Except for the naming scheme, where employees are going to have a field day on explaining the fact that a Nintendo 2DS still plays DS and 3DS games.

What would you suggest calling a 3DS sans the 3D? It's not ideal, but it's the best they could do.

"The 2DS is a 3DS without the 3D functionality. It plays all DS branded games"

Seems simple enough to explain.

if they combined the screens it would almost be like a Wii U gamepad.

those hybrid console theories don't seem too crazy now do they?

Ok it looks horrendous, and will only be confusing to more consumers but personally?

I couldn't give a shit about 3d so a cheaper model is more interesting to me given that I'm on the fence with the 3ds anyway.

After going through the initial "what the what" reaction that everyone has, this seems to be like a pretty damn brilliant move. It's perfect to grab more young people. Much lower price attracts parents, 2D only alleviates fears for parents who care about that and is a feature that's supposedly not designed for the audience they're targeting, 3D Screens still cost quite a bit to make so this allows them to cut the price and remain profitable, and removing the hinge lowers production costs and gives one less thing to break. Nintendo handhelds have always been pretty toughly built, but this thing looks built like a tank. Would have no qualms giving this to a 5-7 year old. They could throw this thing across the room and it'd probably be fine.

So yeah, I personally think it's dumb but it's not for me. Core gamers likely aren't as price sensitive anyway and for them the XL is a better option. It seems like the regular 3DS is now the odd man out in the middle. Interesting to see how these units sell when pokemon arrives.

As in "Heathcliff"
They should rename 3DS to 3DS Mini and slapped a huge sticker on the box with a warning, NO 3D function in this system.

I know you guys are in shock, but have you actually stopped to think about this? They're lowering the entry price of the system by $40 on the same day Pokemon launches. This isn't for us. It's aimed at a younger audience. They (and their parents) don't care if the system is ugly.

This is the smartest thing Nintendo has done in a long time.

Well... Sadly, I think I will buy one because of few reasons. The main reason why I'm considering to pick up 2DS because of Smash 3DS. I'm afraid that I might wore out 3DS XL with Smash 3DS so it would be more safer if I went with 2DS. I'm not sure tho.

Makes more sense when you realize it is not targeted at us, unit is made for gamers 7 and under.

Yep, that is one of other reason why I'm considering to buy this system. The price is somewhat cheap but affordable if they accidentally broke 2DS.

Haha, what a joke. Nintendo has lost it. Would have been better off finding ways to reduce the price of the current 3DS.

Pick up the phone and fire Iwata now. These are the crazy actions of a company that's Lost touch with reality*.

*tad over dramatic but you know what I mean.

Watch this fly off the shelves

Nobody uses the 3D anyway. No hinge is a little weird but the hinge was the flimsiest part of the DS (not sure about the 3DS). Price could be a little lower but that'll come soon enough. Not stylish but I don't choose game systems based on style.

The 3 regular DS's that my kids have been using all have broken hinges. With that said, I'm still torn on whether this will be the "3DS" I get for my 7 year old to play Pokemon and the other stuff. The ability to close it and put it away is nice.

I suppose it depends on what price I can get a real 3DS for around black friday.

Probably!

It looks like a door stop

look I already own a Wii U and I have a limited amount of doors to stop, seriously Nintendo.

i'd rather have the whole team who worked on the 2ds standing in a couple of walmart's gaming section explaining to people that the Wii U is NOT a Wii add-on...

Wow, that just looks terrible and doesn't look very portable. Why would they go backwards in design and not have the ability to fold in half like the rest of the DS devices?

While I think this is incredibly insane/ugly, I just want to point out:

We are not the intended audience for this. This will be good for young kids/familes/ppl without a lot of money - in a way Nintendo is just removing a barrier to access (price point) and ensuring that people who couldn't afford the 3DS will be able to afford something from Nintendo.

Why did they make a handheld out of a parental control function?

All they needed to do was make a new, regular sized budget model. One that would fit in your pocket.
Nintendo's hardware department has completely lost it.

The only thing that I can imagine while looking at this is that Nintendo enjoys giving me aesthetic nightmares.

Who in their right mind would design something that looks like this?

And since the unit doesn't have to close anymore is there any legitimate reason why the screens are still different sizes?

My first thought is "what?"
My second thought is "whaaaat?"
My third thought is "won't this maybe confuse people?"
My fourth thought is "but... NPD tracking...."
My fifth thought is not related to this at all.
My sixth thought is "Nintendo."

I will be buying one for the wife. I have been waiting to get her a second 3ds anyways. this one will save me money and she doesn't give a shit if it looks like a door stop.
