I went to work for less than an hour and what the hell is going on?! "Pleas Unde--" No. No I will NOT understand. <3 Nintendo, they are nuts.

Guys, stop with this nonsense of the tablet form, this is not a tablet.

Are you saying this...

Is going to compete with this?

Do you think children don't have taste?

The idea is good but I won't be convinced this is the best design they could have done. It look hideous.

I think it's kind of a dumb looking system. I wonder how it will sell. I'm not going to make any predictions as it comes out the same day as Pokemon.

It'll sell because of the price and Pokemon, in spite of the terrible looking hardware. I bet most parents buying one for their kid probably won't even realise it doesn't fold in the middle.

This is so clearly Nintendo trying to make a quick buck off the Pokémon launch, not sure whether this is lauaghably or quite sad probably a bit of both.

Reminds me of the GBA Micro announcement a bit. But yeah, seems pretty cool for little kids. If you don't want it you could just get a 3DS for a little more.

Couldn't they call it... 3DS Lite... or something less confusing. It looks ugly as sin, why isn't it clamshell? What the hell is that abomination!?

Can someone try explain why they would abandon the clamshell design, I can't wrap my head around it. Add a hing and that thing fits in your pocket no problem. Why

A) It's probably more expensive to do a clam shell design. I imagine Nintendo is making a profit on this version, even with the $130 price tag due to cost cutting.

B) Harder for kids to break.

Job done. It is a toy and Nintendo will market it as such.

Kids give not a single fuck if a device folds or not.
Young children are not supposed to play with 3D anyway.

This will sell a stupid amount.
After the price drop. $99
Yeah, that's basically the idea. Capture the last bastion of families wary about 3D's effect on their children by removing the 3D. Make the system look more tactile and toy-like. Take a cat, put it in a shirt, BAM, it's Bubsy!

What the fuck. 90% of the time I play my handhelds I don't use headphones, now it's not really going to be an option. Speakers too expensive?

This product isn't aimed at you

It's for kids who don't give a fuck about mono/stereo, 3D/2D and just want to play games - for parents who want to spend less money on a Nintendo handheld

Nobody reads anything anymore

So this is real. Well, I think the money they spent for this would have been better off being used on something else, but what do I know.

They really should have added a second slider though.

I actually don't think it's hideous. It's unusual for sure.

I do wish they had matched the widths of the two screens though, that part bugs me the most.

Smart move for kids though. That price is great.

Stereo cameras on it is super strange. And I wish they had improved the battery life.

I really think it's great.

Why would you go with a clam-shell design when this marketed at kids? Those dummies would break it within the week.

This is cheap, profitable, and appealing.

Nintendo doesn't give a shit what we old ass 20-40 year olds on GAF think, because this was never meant for you. With Nintendo rolling in $$ with the 3DS, the fact that this even exists shows that they got money to experiment and market something like this.

Oh you know what that does actually look really comfy. It looks solid when held just not very good in promo shots.

It's just so hilariously un-portable. You can't just throw this in a bag without worrying about the unit getting damaged, maybe a clasp on cover would have been good?

Portability is an issue for all modern handhelds though. I'd never carry my 3DS XL (and previously the 3DS) without a case and it's not gonna fit into my pocket with a case.

It does look incredibly ugly in those promo shots, but in that GIF it actually looks pretty comfy to hold and pretty... okayish in terms of design.

This always heve been a legend. 3D was never vital to any gameplay.

I do'nt get that thing.. No 3d why not for the cost but why no foldable device like the ds ?? It's more practicable, better for kids so they don't kill the screens and especially it keeps the nds popular layout!

Cause i'll tell you a secret. ds could have been a way better console with one only better screen, no 3D (i like it but..), and a better ergonomic.

Now this.. i don't know..

I've never seen a device with two screens on one slab. If I'm wrong...just let me know.

Great move by Nintendo. Lower price point, tablet form factor. It's not the most beautiful pieces of hardware I've ever seen, but it's probably comfortable and sturdy.

The price and Pokemon is going to make this a decent seller this Christmas.

The main thing is that Nintendo needs to move away from the clamshell design for when the Wii U gamepad ascends to its portable, mobile form in 2016.

Well, this is batshit insane. I don't think it's a bad idea at heart - making a more affordable 3DS in time for the release of Pokemon seems a smart move - but that form factor looks... bizarre.

I got all excited for three seconds. A 3DS minus the 3D with all the other features, sign me u... What... What in the actual fuck is that monstrosity. Its not a clamshell, arguably one of the best design elements of the DS forward? How do you carry that around to street pass, in a padded briefcase?

Damnit, Nintendo.

Tell me this is just trolling us. Please.

So just to think about:

The hinge is probably the single biggest reason for warranty repair. This is why for cheaper versions it's common to ditch mechanical pieces. It's also much cheaper to assemble 2 pieces of plastic than 4. Logistically that hinge probably does make a pretty sizable difference.

The original Gameboy wasn't very portable either but people still found a way to bring it everywhere.

If a kid wants to play these games bad enough they'll figure it out.

The OG gameboy was also an indestructible brick. I never felt like I had to worry about shoving that thing inside my backpack. And that screen didn't really scratch noticeably. It would get nicked but nothing that would make you feel like it was truly damaged.

They finally solved the top screen scratching problem by adding literally inches of clearance!

No clamshell is really stupid!!
Kids can break hinges by dropping the system. I hope this is built like a Gamecube (you could practically drop those off a building and they still worked and running GBAs though the washing machine, come back tank era Nintendo...).

Question: will this come with a charger here in the UK?
Given the fact sheet says the XL does not and is in English we can only assume that is for Europe (I'm right in think NOA spared Americans the inconvenience). In which case, yes.

Also the system is for kids so you would hope for Nintendo to make things easy.

I'm a bit confused why there are not hardware bundles though as factoring in those make the 3DS more attractive.

1) Cost-effective (allowing Nintendo to reach a mass-market price at $129)

2) No more worries about hinge issues

3) Kids won't care at all

4) More durable

5) A way to distinguish a new direction for Nintendo 3DS with a unique variant

6) It looks quite comfy to play

7) Possibly part of a future "all-in-one" corporate strategy for Nintendo

8)

Personally, I'm very pleased at Nintendo's new direction with this handheld.
