Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

When I first read I think: Wow, that's cool. I'm probably buying that.

But then I see that picture.

It's fucking horrible.

It's a piece of plastic with two screens and a lot of wasted space. Can't they simply do a normal 3DS without the 3D technology inside?

Thought it couldn't get worse...then I saw the back.

On the bright side, the color inside will have most of the real estate outside.

At that low price point I would actually buy one if it weren't for the fact that the screens are the same size as a basic 3DS. The 3DS gives my hands cramps because of how small it is, plus the shoulder buttons are terrible, the 2DS seems to have nice shoulder buttons. Oh well, I guess I'll just buy a 3DS XL to replace my 3DS like I originally planned.

Looks like a great product.

It's a clear attempt to head off a worrying trend--younger and younger kids wanting tablets and their parents obliging, combined with cheaper and cheaper quality tablets like the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini. There are 3 year olds who are playing iPad games right now. I know this is shocking for people who are 18-22 but when your friends start having kids, it's amazing. The kids are illiterate but figure out how to unlock it, launch the games they want, and play them. And sometimes even purchase.

This is about recapturing those kids. And also their parents--although parents are worried about kids breaking or scratching, that worry evaporates a little more with each passing month that tablets become more ubiquitous and accepted. This is Nintendo adopting more of the tablet form factor and lowering the cost of entry, and since young kids aren't supposed to use the 3D anyway no harm no foul (doesn't hurt that it's not a selling point).

They still face extreme barriers in terms of software pricing and the way the app market has disrupted it, as well as software variety issues... and I'd also add that even a kid can figure out that two cheap screens and a stylus ain't the same as one beautiful continuous screen with finger power, but I think it's a good move by Nintendo.

I expected to be quoted for crow or posterity after the reaction "what an ugly pile of shit" crowd calms down a little
On top of that they kill every idea in parents heads about the potential "3D is not good for kids" thinkings and needed actions to deactivate it on a regular 3ds

This... this is a thing?

Wait.

Wat.

It's like Nintendo picked a random mockup-design of an imaginary Nintendo-handheld and decided to make it real for the lolz.

I would like a 2DS with a clamshell, I never turn the 3D on. As long as it was significantly cheaper.

While I don't have much problems with the 3DS ergonomics, sometimes the shoulder edges feel like they are going inside my skin.

I'll bet this will feel better holding.

Man, I have so many thoughts going on right now:

1. This is a clearly a strategic ploy from Nintendo to distract us from the awful Wonderful 101 sales in Japan.
sarcasm obv

2. Why not just pricedrop the 3DS in time for Pokemon in October?

3. This thing reminds me of the Wii Mini, but in a portable form.

4. It doesn't look that pocket friendly, at all. Or that comfortable either but maybe things will be different once you try it out yourself.

5. Shouldn't Nintendo be focused on the Wii U instead right now? The 3DS is doing just fine right now, although it could be doing better in NA and Europe.

6. Yeah, no thanks. I'll stick to my 3DS XL for the coming years.

They have the perfect opportunity to put a second circle pad there, but didn't.

I would rather have a 3DS XL with 3D set to 0.

Instead of 2 screen, why don't they make it one tall screen? Probably make the cost even cheaper.

And still no right circle pad. Hahaha. This is why I love Nintendo. And there's no way we can predict how it'll sell.

4 reactions to this:

1) Strategically, this is what should have been done a while ago. 3D was a cancer to the 3DS.
2) God, what an ugly, nonsensical design. Probably designed by the geniuses who gave us the Wii Mini.
3) Good thing though: no clamshell design and big L/R buttons means no more awkward D-pad placing.
4) What's the battery life?

Oh you know what that does actually look really comfy. It looks solid when held just not very good in promo shots.

It's just so hilariously un-portable. You can't just throw this in a bag without worrying about the unit getting damaged, maybe a clasp on cover would have been good?

I could see a graphing calculator styled snap on cover being useful.....

So this is for people that don't know you can turn the 3D completely off on the 3DS. How does the 3D camera on this thing even work?

1) They could have removed the 3D cameras for an extra reduction in cost.
2) This will probably be confusing for general consumers, but proper marketing can alleviate that (reminds me of sth..)
3) No folding was probably to differentiate it more from the 3DS but it is an extremely weird decision.
4) It will probably sell like crazy, and it is probably manufactured in a way that makes Nintendo the most money, so I guess.. profit.

I am eagerly anticipating an Iwata asks or any information behind the thought process and development of this product.

Damn, and all this with no ND at all. It would have been pretty epic. They probably did it so GAF didn't shut down this time.

Looks alright to me, and seems like it could be quite comfortable to use judging by the videos.

I'm not interested in 3D and don't really game on the go anymore, so this could be a nice cheap alternative for gaming while the other half sleeps or watches crap on TV.

One question though, I'm sure I read somewhere that some levels in Mario 3D Land stop you from playing unless you turn the 3D on. Can anyone confirm this?

I remember when people joked about a 3DS revision taking away the 3D back when the system wasn't doing so well, I didn't actually expect Nintendo to actually do one.

Its ugly as fuck...but the parents on tight budget and that compare the pricer 3DS to tables will give them an incentive. This console is not for hardcore gamers. Its entry level. I think its a fantastic idea that can give them some additional and much needed leverage. Consider it the 'iPad Mini" perhaps?

Guys, stop with this nonsense of the tablet form, this is not a tablet.

Are you saying this...

Is going to compete with this?

Do you think children don't have taste?

I think a lot of parents can't afford to spend $330 on a mini for their 8 year old, regardless of what their kids want. The IPad Mini is about 2.5x the price of the 2DS.

Raging Spaniard

If they are Dutch, upright and breathing they are more racist than your favorite player
It looks like a device for kids, not something to fight off the super l33t apple utopia. Get over it GAF, ITS NOT FOR YOU.

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
If this thing doesn't release for under $100, then Iwata needs to go. Asinine.

Get rid of the nearly useless cameras.

I'd just like to echo everyone else.

Also, I dunno if I've just missed the pages of bitching about it, but how the hell are the target audience for this supposed to use the d-pad and the shoulder buttons at the same time?

So yeah, great idea, terrible execution?
