God damn this thread. People getting bent over a budget version for kid. We even have people complaining about no 2nd analog, again for the budget version for kid. Come the fuck on.

All 3DS retail game packaging says "Nintendo 3DS", wont this 2DS confuse general consumers?

What about the displays that say "Only on 3DS"?

This new slate handheld is fucking ugly. It just is. I also don't see it as a good move, from Nintendo.

It's actually funny though: it's as if Nintendo is telling the people that wanted a 3Dless 3DS, that they listened. Nintendo responded by removing the clamshell, lowering the cost and giving them the ugliest handheld I've ever seen. Don't like 3D? Have this monstrosity!
Yeah, I think this is a problem.

No 3D means Devs will be risking alienating a potential sector of the market if they made a 3DS game that relies on 3D. That seems stupid.

On the plus side, the positioning of the joystick and buttons probably makes it mad comfortable to use.

There's a reason they're launching it the same day as Pokemon, lol

It's clearly targeted as an affordable entry point for younger consumers that will take a bit more abuse than the standard clamshell. If you've ever stumbled upon the wide variety of broken DS lites on eBay you'll see why this thing exists.

The name definitely won't help casual consumers though, so store reps will probably be explaining this particular model a lot.
"Excuse me sir, where are the games for the 2DS?"

Does this mean the vast majority of newly developed games from now on will have no meaningful 3D features to compensate for this... thing?

This device makes a lot of sense:

- Tablet design to play into the booming tablet market, less intimidating for children/familes that are only used to tablets.
- Unessential features (3D, stereo sound) cut to drive production cost down, so it can be sold to children/families for cheap.
- Sell alongside Pokemon for mass casual appeal.
- No vulnerable hinges kids can easily damage.
- No second stick because that would be stupid. This is a budget 3DS, not an upgrade.
- No 3DS brand to avoid "why can't this [3DS Lite] not play 3D? I want my money back!" questions.

The only two things I can't wrap my head around are

- It's designed to cut production costs as much as possible, yet there's still a 3D camera in there?
- Pokemon is a system seller, it's gonna sell a shit ton of 3DSs anyway. If I was Nintendo, I wouldn't want to give them a cheap option.

If you are not a kid/don't have kids/already have a 3DS (XL) you are not supposed to be interested in this device. You are not the target audience.

I actually do agree with Stump. This is a machine for parents, kids and Pokemon + heading off increasingly cheap entry level tablets.

It is ugly, it's dirty hack, and it's going to make life hell for the Gamestop clerk for a while.

It's also cheap, is being released in-line with next-generation Pokemon, and kids will bloody force their parents to soldier through the confusion to buy one and a copy of X/Y.

Nintendo, food shaped handhelds don't work. Just look at the N-Gage!

I thought the taco was bad but this just takes the cake.

I'm so ashamed of that pun

I still think this GIF needs to be reposted every page:

It looks incredibly ergonomic for adult hands, and quite durable.

Looks like it would be uncomfortable if you have to use L and the D-pad at once.

This is very smart of Nintendo. Although $99 would have been even more effective..
Also, a simple all-white and all-black colouring on the unit would have made the design better service.

Right now I'm convinced Nintendo's "make things look good" division checked out after the OG 3DS. Goodness gracious what are they doing. This looks like a monstrosity.

Didn't Nintendo say this is for <7 y/o?
it did!

Why are people complaining about this? It is not like the 3DS and XL are going to cease to exist.

If this does well decent 3D effects will not be a priority. I own a 3DS for the 3D stuff.

Yeah, I see now that they abandoned clamshell to give off that tablet vibe to appeal to kids who spend ours on their tablets. Still not sure if I'm behind the idea, but it'll probably sell great.

This further proves one thing though, Nintendo is done with redesigns, they create alternate designs for alternate segments of the market.

Being superficial is a thing. The utilitarian argument doesn't matter, I'm sure most of us know we're not the target audience.

a friend of mine pointed out : it'll feel like you're holding a Wii U gamepad, so you'll wonder "hmm what else could I hold that will feel like this in my hands" and then proceed to buy a Wii U! GENIUS MARKETING

Well the form factor is definitely strange. But it's cheap and releasing right for Pokemon, it's also obviously not targeted at us.

I don't really understand the outrage? It's a cheap version of their handheld targeted a kids. It's not like they're discontinuing the other models.

Real talk guys, my 6 y/o has been begging for a 3DS for quite some time.

He's gunna get a 2DS.

I'm going to play Zelda LTTP2 on it.

And I won't be ashamed.

...hate me...
Well, I hope for the sake of games developed with 3D in mind that this thing never takes off.
I don't think there's a single game that relies on that significantly.

I play all my games on the 3DS XL with the 3D fully off.

Looks interesting, although i already have a 3ds XL, so i'm not really interested, even though it's obviously budget designed and aimed for kids, so i know i'm not on the demographic for this. Can't really understand the negative reaction for this.

I love it, while I don't think it's right for me (love my 3DS) this is going to be a hit with kids who'll probably be snatching it up alongside the new pokemon game.

There's a grand total of one game that uses 3D for anything other than visuals. It's simply not an issue.

I think this is the canniest thing Nintendo's done in years. Hell, it may be looked back on as the 3DS's DS Lite moment.
