Nintendo 2DS' two screens are one single screen covered by plastic

So basically it's a Wii U tablet that can play 3DS games?

What a weird decision for Nintendo to make this console, usually they're on top of the handheld market, but I honestly think they've missed the mark here.

The WiiU gamepad ir really quite comfortable to hold whereas this looks pretty awkward and uncomfortable.

Oh! One good thing about it being one screen is that you won't have that issue of two screens with different color temperatures.

What problems are they trying to solve with the 3DS by doing this? Or is is just a problem of lining their pockets with profit?

Well it's obvious why they didn't do it that way and the replies already got that point across I think. It would be cool if they did do this in the future with a DSi-esque refresh of the entire 3DS line redone without the 3D though.

Interesting.

I'd think your mock-up is better. Wouldn't need to fragment anything but could add unique viewpoints in browser and some apps due to full touch.

The touch panel is an independent layer on top of the bottom screen on all DS and 3DS models, you can even buy replacements online. Therefore, the 2Ds screen is not touchable outside the bottom screen area.

Also, this is not the Wii U gamepad screen, the resolution doesn't match. The single LCD needs to be 400 pixels wide and ~600 pixels tall (the gap between the top and bottom screens must be accounted for).

Thats a bummer. Makes more sense than using a whole large touch screen though.

I still think my idea is a good direction, regardless.

For their next platform, yes, since it's the most elegant way to escape the dual screen form factor without losing BC (which is vital in handheld space). For a kids-focused costs-cutting model that is the handheld version of the Wii Mini? No, wait until next (Nintendo) gen.

You really DONT want to introduce new functionality, just simplify it. You dont want to have new unique software for the 2DS, thats what causes confusion.

The way it is now its fine, its a cheap 3DS aimed for kids 7 and under.

It's supposed to be alternative to the 3DS not a new must-have iteration of it. Makes perfect sense that they made it the way they did.

1) The bottom screen has to be separate as it's touchscreen the the other screen isn't.
2) I'm sure someone told me (although I could be wrong) that Nintendo guidelines say something about using the hinge gap properly, ie., take it into account when scrolling something from one screen into the other, so having them right next to each other wouldn't work for that either.
3) For your lleft example, the bottom screen would have to scaled up as it's not the same resolution as the top screen, which wouldn't be great.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.

I was patiently waiting for somebody with a working cognitive function to show up in this thread. M3d10n, you win one 2DS thread. Please, claim your prize at the exit.

Yes it's a shame they're not taking advantage of it in the way shown, but it is still super understandable and yes very true they shouldn't fragment the market in that way. But now I really hope whatever the next true successor to the 3DS is has something closer to the 2DS in form, something more solid and sturdy like a GameBoy again, and a huge tall screen that can act as two for backwards compatibility would be wonderful. A transition away from two screens needs to happen eventually and that's probably the best option, if they want to keep the always BC to one gen behind tradition.

$40 is a pretty significant cut. I'm not sure if these changes will outweigh that, but we'll see when we inevitably get a teardown. We all know Nintendo will make a ton on these whether or not the margin is a big as the other units.

It's not really a "cut" in price, when it's a different "cut-down" device, right?
