Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Grahh. I just bought a 3DS to play SMT and all I wanted was a 2DS because the price was ridiculous and the 3D, while neat, doesn't make it worth that price.

That price is awesome, and it's just what I wanted.

Shame it looks so damn ugly. Nintendo is usually pretty good on that front, it's like Apple releasing a PC that looks like a trash can or something....

There will be no hybrid but the dual screen is done. One high res screen with a nore tablet 2ds look will happen. A mix between a very small tablet and gba would be awesome

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Gameboy brand? Nah, it's time for a brand new name.
About the console: hybrid or not, I think dual screens + being able to fold the console shouldn't be abandoned, far from it. It's just so useful to have another screen for hub, options, touch interactions and anything else, as well as closing it...but it can't be denied how tablet and smartphone rised, and the advantages of a device with just a big screen.
...Why not both?

This is how both could be done: two screens, same proportions, no separation, both touch. They can be used as the last Nintendo handhelds. But, by opening the console completely, there you have one big touch screen.

I think Nintendo will stray away from implementing unnecessary and expensive technology in the future. Their next handheld isn't going to launch at $249, that's clear.

That would be cool. I can't see Nintendo continuing with the DS brand, especially with all the makes and models. A new handheld under the DS brand would further confusion.

Nintentablet?

Something like your video is what I'd want. It seems weird when the bottom screen on the 3DS isn't uniform because of the placement of the buttons, but then Nintendo's okay with widening it and putting the buttons beside the longer screen on the 2DS.

Why hasn't it got dual sticks?

Because the dual sticks use the IR port.

The only way they could build in dual sticks would be to omit the IR port and make the right stick use the IR bus. Otherwise you'd have data collision from the IR port in twinstick games.

Considering the low number of games that actually support the CirclePad, not worth potentially splitting the market over a peripheral nobody cares about.

Maturity, bitches.
It's been routinely considered the worst looking console ever made.
Honestly people saying this have clearly only seen two systems their entire life. There have been some truly ugly looking consoles released in times gone by.

Man that white/red (Europe only) is so much better looking than the black/blue (all places).

I just can't get over how much difference a simple colour change on the 2DS can make.

For sure. My white 3DS XL is glorious. Looks much sleeker than the others, and it's just a single colour change.

Love how the usual Nintendo shills have convinced them that this is an awesome idea and that it looks awesome!

Oh hey, you're back! It hasn't been the same without your shenanigans. :D

also lol at wanting them to go back to single screen

and lol at calling people shills for liking something you don't

I love you Brera <3

I have a question that needs a no pationate answer:

Wouldn't you have liked for the 2 screens to be closer together since the hinge has been removed? I wonder why Nintendo kept some distance between them?

Also an sliding protective cover like those in old Casio calculators would have been fantastic for portability and protection.

Only reason I see is to make a very clear distinction between the part that is touch controlled and the one that is not. Especially since this is aimed at kid mainly.

Hmm the cover idea is nice but I wouldn't be surprised if they actually experimented with that and decided against it.

I dig the new design, and I defy anyone to call me a Nintendo shill. :)

I returned the 3DS XL I bought a few weeks ago and I'll pick up a 2DS, assuming its as comfortable as it looks.

I hated the XL hardware.

Wow. I go away from the net for a few days and this is what I come back to.

Anyway, to blow my own trumpet:

Posted on 22nd August.

I'm a fuckin' visionary.

Do you have the link to the post?

Right on the money!

But as an advice save the trumpet blowing for the months post Pokemon to see how it sales in comparison to the other versions. Im saying this because the device version that sales the most is actually the more expensive one: The 3DS XL.

Yep most of the views came from people disliking the video. The dislike bar was huge then Nintendo disabled it because apparently they don't like criticism.

When I saw the likes/dislikes yesterday, before them being blocked, it was something like 11k likes and 21k unlikes...so, there's also a good amount of people which likes the 2DS.

EDIT: Polygon impressions

Where the 2DS immediately failed for me was its cross pad, which feels softer and mushier than the clicky D-pad of the original Nintendo 3DS, the model I use almost daily. It just feels, well, cheaper.

Boo this man. The clicky D-pad on the original 3DS was terrible. Thankfully this one appears to be more like the XL.

I can understand that, kinda, but the shoulder buttons sound awful. If it's like the gamepad, then I'll stay far away. They don't have any give and feel cheap.

Could the next Nintendo handheld have a touchscreen that is high enough resolution to have both half of the screen function like the screens on the 3DS now? Or would that be impossible?

The 2DS is one large panel under the plastic. It's not only possible, it already exists.

If both screens were identical in size like in the first DS you would have a very valid point in my eyes. The dimensions of the screens are a clear giveaway of what is what.

Nintendo retaining the space betwwen screens is an odd choice. Just using MS Paint to put the screens closer and it looks quite a lot better.

Think they missed an oportunity by not including an sliding cover. Just watching the video an they seem to be targeting this for a younger audince. The extra protection of the cover would have improved durabilty and portability.

Totally doable and is even working on cell phone emulators as of right now.

What? Source for this because it'even more interesting that they preserved the space between screens then.
