Shame it looks so damn ugly. Nintendo is usually pretty good on that front, it's like Apple releasing a PC that looks like a trash can or something....
I said this in an old thread.

If both screens were identical in size like in the first DS you would have a very valid point in my eyes. The dimensions of the screens are a clear giveaway of what is what.
Nintendo retaining the space betwwen screens is an odd choice. Just using MS Paint to put the screens closer and it looks quite a lot better.
Think they missed an oportunity by not including an sliding cover. Just watching the video an they seem to be targeting this for a younger audince. The extra protection of the cover would have improved durabilty and portability.
Totally doable and is even working on cell phone emulators as of right now.
What? Source for this because it'even more interesting that they preserved the space between screens then.
Jeremy Parish said:Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions. This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it. While this makes no difference for the system's normal functions -- after all, neither the system's firmware or its software would recognize the hidden, inactive zones of the screen or the upper portion's touch capabilities, even if you exposed those portions -- I'm curious to see what hardware modders manage to do with the system.

If it was painted like R2D2 you would buy 10.
Two screens with no hinge, super empty looking, boring color choices, no 3D.whats to hate?
Boo this man. The clicky D-pad on the original 3DS was terrible. Thankfully this one appears to be more like the XL.

R2 IS a trash can, but far more popular than other trash cans.If it was painted like R2D2 it would still look like a trash can/ash tray.
You're not serious, are you?
Well it is rather odd that some people like the design, since it is a devolution of what the 3DS is. The only thing that this device brings to the table in reality is a price reduction to DS levels, a measure that was needed due to declining sales and how abrupt the market has turn for dedicated portable gaming devices. Not sure what you're talking about they're all obviously shills!
Thanks for posting the source. So an actuall bigger screen, touch based even, is included since it reduces costs,.
Since the buttons, pad and circle pad are now higher, the bottom part looks a bit empty. It's not that I want something to be there.Well dude, your in luck!
But seriously, empty looking? What do you want to look at besides the two screens?
People still claiming for the return of the Gameboy brand are super weird.

Meh. Now I find the d-pad location on my DS Lite awkward after so many 3DS hours. To be honest I've owned lots of handhelds and I don't find them uncomfortable even when most people think they are. And my hands are hardly small (in fact GAF told me my thumbs are massive).more confortable (buttons and triggers position is way better, at least better than the normal 3ds. I have one and the d-pad position is a disaster. Also, my fingers are not in a natural position when using the triggers. I have read that in the 2ds both the face buttons and the d-pad are higher, thats another problem of the 3ds for me), a loooot cheaper, POKEMON, again, POKEMON!!!

Also, I'll play Pokémon in 3D Again, I'm one of the weirdos who love 3D.

All that ugly and they still couldn't add a 2nd analog stick?
Shit they could have just mapped the dpad controls to a 2nd stick.
Is not all due to tablets thought. Losing the fold ability is a way to easily reduce the cost of the unit.I blame the success of tablets for allowing this to happen. I'll be clinically depressed if the next Nintendo handheld isn't foldable.
First, i've seen many games played in a direct capture device that erases the empty space and there are no problems whatsoever. So until you prove me wrong i'll disagree there. Why, games that split the screen are programmed to account for that space, you change it and the games won't look right.
Not only would that split the userbase, it's not the point of this device.
The entire point of this device is to get the 3DS hardware down to the $129 price point, which is where the last two Nintendo handhelds have sold the best. It's a price point that Nintendo has priced themselves out of with the 3DS\XL.
Just bring back Gameboy brand.

Excuse this poor mock-up, I did it using my laptop's touch-pad.
I understand that some people think the current design looks a bit bland in the lower half, so I've moved some things about:
- Stereo speakers at top
- Start/Select moved down
- Second analogue stick added
- Palm grips in lower corners

The shoulder buttons are still an issue.

Remember the system has one screen under there so there might be an issue with the button placement.
Cool design by the way.
what's this? how do we know its one screen?
pocket-lint said:The plastic casing essentially "splits" the one screen into twin displays, according to USgamer, making the 2DS a more tablet-like handheld than anything else Nintendo has ever offered.
Nintendo apparently built the 2DS this way to cut costs, because it's clearly less expensive to build a product with one screen and just mask the space in the middle with plastic to create the illusion of two screens.
This also means the top screen is touch-sensitive like the bottom, though it's cloaked in a non-touch sensitive sheet of plastic. Removing the plastic sheet could potentially make the 2DS a dual touch-screen console. But that's a risk only hackers and hardware modders should take.
has this always been there?
what is it?

The settings menu?
not on my 3DS and its updated to the latest FW
not on my 3DS and its updated to the latest FW
The 2DS is different because it doesn't have a physical wi-fi switch.
It seems to be a screenshot of upcoming firmware. Possibly Miiverse FW, but probably just a rearrangement of settings.
EDIT: The Wi-Fi switch comes on and off automatically depending on software according to Nintendo.
wha?
so the settings menu is there to help turn wifi back on?
im lost

There is a thing that continue to bother me: why there are two rear cameras, if it CAN'T show in 3D?
