Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Shame it looks so damn ugly. Nintendo is usually pretty good on that front, it's like Apple releasing a PC that looks like a trash can or something....

If both screens were identical in size like in the first DS you would have a very valid point in my eyes. The dimensions of the screens are a clear giveaway of what is what.

Nintendo retaining the space betwwen screens is an odd choice. Just using MS Paint to put the screens closer and it looks quite a lot better.

Think they missed an oportunity by not including an sliding cover. Just watching the video an they seem to be targeting this for a younger audince. The extra protection of the cover would have improved durabilty and portability.

Totally doable and is even working on cell phone emulators as of right now.

What? Source for this because it'even more interesting that they preserved the space between screens then.

Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions. This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it. While this makes no difference for the system's normal functions -- after all, neither the system's firmware or its software would recognize the hidden, inactive zones of the screen or the upper portion's touch capabilities, even if you exposed those portions -- I'm curious to see what hardware modders manage to do with the system.

Not sure what you're talking about they're all obviously shills!
Well it is rather odd that some people like the design, since it is a devolution of what the 3DS is. The only thing that this device brings to the table in reality is a price reduction to DS levels, a measure that was needed due to declining sales and how abrupt the market has turn for dedicated portable gaming devices.

There were people that actually loved the last Wii redesign. Is just a phase some people go through when a new product is released.
Thanks for posting the source. So an actuall bigger screen, touch based even, is included since it reduces costs,.

Well dude, your in luck!

But seriously, empty looking? What do you want to look at besides the two screens?
Since the buttons, pad and circle pad are now higher, the bottom part looks a bit empty. It's not that I want something to be there.

Also, yes, I love OG 3DS everything-wise, so I shouldn't judge, I guess :p

I blame the success of tablets for allowing this to happen. I'll be clinically depressed if the next Nintendo handheld isn't foldable.

Two screens with no hinge, super empty looking, boring color choices, no 3D.

:(

more confortable (buttons and triggers position is way better, at least better than the normal 3ds. I have one and the d-pad position is a disaster. Also, my fingers are not in a natural position when using the triggers. I have read that in the 2ds both the face buttons and the d-pad are higher, thats another problem of the 3ds for me), a loooot cheaper, POKEMON, again, POKEMON!!! :p

Meh. Now I find the d-pad location on my DS Lite awkward after so many 3DS hours. To be honest I've owned lots of handhelds and I don't find them uncomfortable even when most people think they are. And my hands are hardly small (in fact GAF told me my thumbs are massive).

Also, I'll play Pokémon in 3D :D Again, I'm one of the weirdos who love 3D.

I'm liking it. It looks comfortable to me with the circle pad. I wonder how it'll be with the D-pad though. Can't be much worse than the original 3DS (wasn't a fan of the D-pad placement).

In fact. I haven't enjoyed a D-pad on a Nintendo handheld since the original GBA. The GBA SP and Micro are serviceable. DS and 3DS have been uncomfortable though. I really hope this marks the end of fold-able handhelds from Nintendo. Yes they are easier to care for but they just aren't' as comfortable.

The only thing I really wish I could do is switch the D-pad and Circle Pad on the fly. A button on the side that would eject the superficial D-pad and Circle Pad (one piece) and they you'd just flip it around and click it back into place reversed. This way 2D games would benefit from more comfortable positioning for the D-pad.

EDIT: What would GAF say to a microswitch joystick on a handheld? I think the Neo Geo Pocket had one. 8-way direction joystick good for both 3D and 2D games.

Now i feel bad thinking about not having the posibily of watching god mampharos in 3D... He would be there, but i wouldnt be able to adore it :'(

Edit: Wow, i didnt notice the "Meh" at the begining of your post until now... :O im slow.

All that ugly and they still couldn't add a 2nd analog stick?

Shit they could have just mapped the dpad controls to a 2nd stick.

Why, games that split the screen are programmed to account for that space, you change it and the games won't look right.

Not only would that split the userbase, it's not the point of this device.

The entire point of this device is to get the 3DS hardware down to the $129 price point, which is where the last two Nintendo handhelds have sold the best. It's a price point that Nintendo has priced themselves out of with the 3DS\XL.

Is not all due to tablets thought. Losing the fold ability is a way to easily reduce the cost of the unit.

First, i've seen many games played in a direct capture device that erases the empty space and there are no problems whatsoever. So until you prove me wrong i'll disagree there.

Second, "spliting" the user base won't prove to be a problem in any way. Nintendo has done worse in the control aspect with the Wii U, yet developers pack many controller options in those games.

On the other hand i totaly agree with the price comment, the point of the device is cost reduction. Not offering a better or diferent handheld, On the contrary is kind of feature deprived in comparison.

Okay, I just want to say that the 2DS video was very easy to follow and listen to, no dubstep crap, no trying to be artsy or cool, just "Here's the product, it's a Nintendo handheld gaming console, here's what it can do. It's backwards compatible, offers local and online multiplayer, can be enjoyed with family and friends..." THAT is what the WiiU ads should be like. Calmly say what the product is, what it can do, say it's the new Nintendo console, tout the local multiplayer, show that it can be enjoyed with family and friends, it's backwards compatible with the Wii... Oh and those 2DS alternate color mockups look great (love the brown!)

Excuse this poor mock-up, I did it using my laptop's touch-pad.

I understand that some people think the current design looks a bit bland in the lower half, so I've moved some things about:

- Stereo speakers at top
- Start/Select moved down
- Second analogue stick added
- Palm grips in lower corners

The shoulder buttons are still an issue.

I'm honestly still hoping this is a joke :(

but I may end up getting it since I don't have a 3DS and is lower in price, is the only thing they got rid of the 3D or are there other missing features?

Remember the system has one screen under there so there might be an issue with the button placement.

Cool design by the way.

what's this? how do we know its one screen?

The plastic casing essentially "splits" the one screen into twin displays, according to USgamer, making the 2DS a more tablet-like handheld than anything else Nintendo has ever offered.

Nintendo apparently built the 2DS this way to cut costs, because it's clearly less expensive to build a product with one screen and just mask the space in the middle with plastic to create the illusion of two screens.

This also means the top screen is touch-sensitive like the bottom, though it's cloaked in a non-touch sensitive sheet of plastic. Removing the plastic sheet could potentially make the 2DS a dual touch-screen console. But that's a risk only hackers and hardware modders should take.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
There is a thing that continue to bother me: why there are two rear cameras, if it CAN'T show in 3D?

I think it must be because of the AR.
There are some games the work with the data from 2 cameras. Including them is probably less time consuming than reprogramming Face Raiders, etc.

Plus, it gives them an upgrade hook. "When you're old enough to buy a real 3DS, you'll be able to see all the photos you took in 3D!"
