It's releasing on Batman vs Superman's third weekend. These sort of movies are so front-loaded that I don't think it will be as huge a deal as some people are making it out to be. Especially if BvS ends up with Man of Steel's legs.
Pretty much.

Ant-Man will do fine. Especially if BvS is of the same questionable quality as Man of Steel.

by this you mean what?
Fairly "obscure" comic character (unknown to most of the audience), Edgar Wright making a big budget superhero movie, and in general the Marvel universe expanding is so much fun to watch (GOTG looks great).

A lot of things I would have never thought could happen are going down, and in Ant Man's case it seems to be happening in the best way possible.

It'll probably suck but it sure as hell wont flop.

I'm really not sure. The public reception to Man of Steel was pretty lukewarm, and the reaction to Affleck as Batman has been nothing short of pure loathing. It's entirely possible for them to improve things by release - though I'd be hesitant to say it's a guaranteed hit. People will see it first weekend - but will it have legs?

Good chance is the best not-TDK comic book movie ever. It will sure in the fuck be better than anything Marvel has released so far.
Not with Zack Snyder directing it won't be.

Wait, I actually can't tell if you're saying Superman/Batman will be better or Ant-Man will be.

think he's talking about Ant-Man.

And yeah, there's no fucking question whether Ant-Man will be better than Superman vs. Batman. Compare the last ten years of both directors and it's contest which one is going to turn out the better movie.

On a second glance I thought he might be.

I think GotG and Ant-Man will both be competing for best Marvel movie with the first Iron Man. Though I have no idea what they're going to do with an Ant-Man movie if it's not going to involve Ultron.

Hell I'm slowly developing the opinion that for genre riffs I think Edgar Wrights trilogy has been better than tarantino's movies post-kill bill

I am not sure it will be too comparable to MoS however. Batman is a far bigger film character, that will play a lot into the gross. Especially when this looks to be Batman vs. Superman and not a MoS 2 featuring Batman.

It doesn't matter if Batman is bigger. This film is still a Snyder/Goyer project, starring the same Superman characters as Man of Steel (and therefore subject to people's opinion of Man of Steel). It's still subject to Snyder and Goyer's strengths/weaknesses as story-tellers. It's going to be front loaded as hell. Even if it opens 75% higher than Man of Steel (giving it an opening in the same range as The Avengers), the third weekend will be in the $35-40M range.

Death Proof, yeah. Basterds and Django? Hahaha, no.

I'm on my phone so I'm too lazy to type but the nutshell is that Tarantino just makes tired ass homages (I can't rewatch those movies you listed save for a few scenes now) and Edgar Wright actually adds to the genre with other themes.

Like I think tarantino's been coasting since Jackie Brown which is his most mature movie, and the rest of the stuff he made since has nothing to say. Yet I read up on something like worlds end which is a seemingly innocent genre romp and it blows my mind how much thought they put into the metaphors and the main character

/phone rant

For American audiences, just let it be known that the newest Avengers 2 trailer will be attached at the beginning of Ant-Man and people will flock to seeing this film.
Down here in Australia, distributors don't attach specific trailers to specific films, I think it's up to the cinema.

Won't Avengers 2 already be in theaters?

Avengers 2 will probably come out in May, like the first one did and Ant-Man will come out in July or August.

Uhhhh ... wut?

Didn't they say Avengers 2 = May?

Just like iron man, captain America, hulk, Thor.....

Nooooo, those are all cool characters with powers/ stuff people can fantasize about about.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
This movie is going to be a box office disaster.

If you break it down to its simplistic form, it's a film with BATMAN and SUPERMAN. That alone assures its success in my opinion. It has more going for it than against it.

I have no doubt that BvS will be a financial success. But I don't necessarily think it'll make Dark Knight numbers, unless the quality ends up being there as well. It'll have a good opening weekend, solid second, then taper off with plenty of room for Ant-Man.

You don't think a Batman/Superman movie will do a billion? It can be an absolute shitfest and its still going to do a billion.

I can't see this movie doing too well. I think it's gonna do "Ehh.." at best.

People here like to hound me down about this and say I'm wrong but really, I just don't see the appeal to the character or his powers for the general public. Just seems like one of those "Weellllll, we're to chicken shit afraid to do a movie without White Dick being in the spot light so what's a important white male character that's in the Avenger's universe that we still have the rights to that can pad up our list of movies?" moves.

This is actually a really smart move. They moved it from the same day as the new James Bond, where it would surely fail, to two weeks after its nearest competition (Batman/Superman). When Ant Man opens Batman/Superman will already be in its third week of release. 2015 is going to be crowded as hell so this is almost certainly the best possible place for it. It has higher profit potential in the summer as well.

No one's saying it won't make money. But with three weeks between them, it's not going to run over Ant-Man or anything.

remember me
Captain America only did $368 million. I'm sure they're going to keep the budget modest, so with a good ad campaign, and a big post credits teaser in Avengers 2, there's no way this won't match that.

So could Sackhoff be Wasp in Ant Man then? Also have we had two Marvel movies in the same summer before? Seems like they're pushing it.

Put a beginning of credits (so everyone sees it) sequence teasing Antman and tell everyone to go see the "next step in the Avengers saga in a couple months." Put Downey in the teaser and your good even if he isn't in Antman.

...or they could just work him in to the post-credits scene, which has been Marvel's Stock in-trade thusfar.

It's May. There's no evidence for a delay.

Either Avengers or Ant Man are going to be in May. My guess is Avengers. I doubt they're going to put Avengers and Ant Man in back to back months. Avengers in May most likely and Ant Man in late July/early August. That doesn't leave much room for Star Wars unless something like June. That along with the production/time issues that Abrams has and the rumors about the delay already, I could easily see Episode 7 being pushed to Fall.

I'm willing to bet money that all three aren't going to be released in the summer.

Avengers is May 1st

Star Wars is end of May

Ant Man is July 31st

Read the first page of this thread. The Star Wars rumors were false and made up by Devin Faraci just to get his little blog hits.

Just because they were false at the time, doesn't mean there isn't some fire to it. We already know that Abrams is under crunch time. There are saturation issues when you dump all three into an already packed summer. It's not like Summer of 2015 is dead. Again they could have easily pushed back Ant Man to some time in mid November or early December, it's telling when they move it up to a packed summer.
