Not that your comment is particularly original or insightful, but I do have a hint for you: those dangerous men you can play as are empowered by their actions. None of them take any crap.

A game can be really good and still have some issues with sexism. Still waiting for a GTA game with a female protagonist who's just as nuts as the rest of 'em.
Xander, it seems you've played it (I think?). What did you think of it overall?

As a man I am offended by the way men are portrayed in this video game.

Why do I only have the choice to play:

A) A rich middle-aged asshole with a cheating wife and 2 shitty kids.
B) An black gang banger who lives in the projects.
C) A dangerous hillbilly redneck who runs a meth lab and enjoys murder.

Why can't I play a strong, successful male character who has been to university and has a great career and is generally happy with life and doesn't have any personal issues?

Rockstar you shit heads, why can't you more accurately portray real life instead of parodying it?!

I understand your case but no one points that out and gets thoroughly disrespected because of their opinion and that's my issue. If a woman brings up a case about how women are portrayed in video games, they are ALWAYS bashed for it and it get pointed out in disgusting ways.

I remember when Bioshock Infinite had some controversy about the male lead and though it was a topic of discussion, no male journalist or reviewer was disgraced because of his opinion. I completely agree that the stereotypes in games, especially GTA, are just as unfunny as they are in real life but no one has a problem with that. No one is making that case in any review because it's about 'Men'. The black stereotype isn't even a topic of debate and that's a huge issue.

But women.. Always women in games, if they are to be discussed, it turns out to be a full on bash because she doesn't know what she's talking about or either she shouldn't have an opinion and she shouldn't point out things because it somehow isn't relevant to the entire purpose of the game. No, the game being misogynistic should not not be pointed out and should not be addressed. It's apart of the game and if you don't understand it then Gtfo. That attitude is ridiculous.

Really?

I suppose it's better than making a petition to get the reviewer fired.

Man I had ZERO hype for this because I honestly haven't liked a GTA past my first 5-10 hours with it yet. In fact RDR is my only rockstar game I've beat(twice in fact).

With that said I'm pretty much sold but I really want to wait for either the PC or ps4 version. I just hope it doesn't take too long.

I get that they may have gone a bit too far, but let's not make this into a death camp of tolerance scenario... =/
It's shameful that some people can't respect others, cooler heads should prevail.

Watch out, they [gamespot comments] have a petition going to fire the reviewer.

https://www.change.org/petitions/gamespot-staff-fire-carolyn-petit

Then there is her Persona 4 article where she bashes two very strong and well done characters to further her own agenda. Apparently she did not beat the game and just wanted to say what she wanted. Fyi Petit, Kanji admits he is gay if you max his social link and Naoto is very proud of her boyish characteristics while also finally being proud of being a woman. Way to insult two characters without knowing them or doing research. But would of known this if you bothered to finish the game or pay attention right?

Bring back the :lol

It's funny how this site and that dumb ,,comedic'' reviewer (whose shtick is to talk fast) are always brought up as if their pseudo intellectual narratives are better than the rest BUT DONT YOU FUCKING DARE SCORING MY ANTICIPATED GAME LOW

That sessler blurb has to be sarcastic/tongue in cheek right? If not, man that is pretty bad/an embarrassing level of hyperbole.

Yes. I think it's an excellent game. I agree that the writing isn't always as clever as it thinks it is in regards to sexism and politics. Some of the satire is kind of hit or miss. I hmm'd and ha'd through some cutscenes.

Some of it is dynamite funny though. Like I said, I found it hit or miss. Doesn't stop the game itself from being great either.

What do you guys think of the mysoginy complaint by Gamespot? Too personal? Valid?

I think it's a bit of missing the forest for the trees.

In a game of psychopaths, sociopaths, killers, violent criminals, drug lords, mafiosos, etc the part that bothers someone is the not ideal treatment of women?

That's like judging Adolf Hitler, and focus weirdly in some petty flaw of his personality instead of the whole exterminating jews thing.

Even if we give it as a valid complaint, a bit of mysoginist behavior is "expected" in the setting of gang members, crime veterans, sociopaths and the like, for realism sake.

Man the payola train must be pretty powerful if a transgendered woman (understandably) sensitive to misogyny still has to give it a 9.

Disappointed she didn't give it lower. GTA games deserve to be called out for their regressive bullshit, misogynistic and otherwise. The Housers come off as more disturbed and unbalanced with each new game, seriously.

So, you're going to dismiss a very valid stance on the excessive sex and violence in a video game? That's a rather immature stance to take. Maybe you should be watching Barney & Friends. It's a show that teaches positive values and reinforces social connections.

Has Edge become softer on reviews? Since it was founded the number of perfect scores the mag has put out don't even mount to 20 since it was founded and this year alone they have given out 2-3 perfect scores.

The best quote I've seen is one from Metro Game Central. They're the only reviewer who really mention gameplay and not the story.

However I understand GTA is all about being funny and what not so I don't point out the things that do offend me. However I'm not going to get mad if someone else does. These are all opinion anyways.

That petition is a joke. My point exactly.

If he didn't write all of his reviews like that I would say he's probably just doing a parody of how many handled GTA IV's reviews. But he's not, or at least if he is then I can't tell the difference between that one and his other reviews of big games.

You'd be hard-pressed to attribute to misogyny what can more easily be explained by poorly-conceived satire at worst. It's Rockstar's bread and butter. But I get it, we need some controversy to discuss in a review thread for a near-flawless game.

That's fair criticism, but it's not my point, correct me if I'm wrong, but you're offended by the way humain beings are portrayed, not men in particular, while some critics and users seem to be only put off by the way women are portrayed in the game world, ignoring that men, places (Statue of Happiness in IV, for instance) and the society as a whole are depicted in a similarly (perhaps grossly) sterotypical, satirical way.

Is it more tolerable than GTAIV? Some of the social commentary/satire in that one made me want to stab myself in the head.
Though it did some of the funny well.

"I can imagine, 200 years from now, like our reading of Dickens, the game will be regarded as a catalog of our contemporary travails, an accelerated reality bearing more truth than just gazing at our own reflection."

Honestly, the place I live in, the demand currently for GTA in the market place is stupidly high, so my opinion on the game will have to wait till it drops down to Earth. In the mean time, I've always found GTA games to be formulaic in their mission structure, and a bit too satirical to be taken seriously as a narrative.

Grand Theft Auto IV was the culmination of everything wrong and right about GTA. I hope GTA V doesn't fall into the same pitfalls. I am taking whatever reviewers are saying about this game with the smallest pinch of salt one can get.

And the satire is poorly conceived because it comes off as misogynistic. Ding!

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with Sessler? That reads like self-parody.

whenever reviewers lay on hard the hyperbolic cross media comparisons, in this case with dickens, it always feels like it comes from a place of insecurity. like you have to shout about how each major game with a story is a transcendant, socially concious piece of contemporary art to justify devoting your profession or at least a significant amount of your time to videogames.

I stopped even going to GameSpot after the Skyward Sword fiasco. Reviewer gave it a 7 for bad controls while basically admitting he didn't know how the game mechanics worked and that he played the entire game incorrectly.

Gamespot gave it a 9 and people are already going into meltdown mode over a 9? Instead of losing faith in humanity, I choose to instead laugh at those poor pathetic souls.

Stuff like Sessler's review makes me actually pause even more than other things because it feels like a repeat of what happened around GTAIV.

It's like the more bombastic and aggrandizing the review the more it feels like it's cover for flaws that the reviewer either refuses or fails to see.
