Grand Theft Auto V - Review Thread | Take 2

In the Sessler review he says the map isn't as big as some GTA games but I thought it was supposed to be as big as SA, RDR and GTA put together. Are R* perhaps including the underwater locations too? Which is fine by me.

He could just be overestimating the scale of the older games.

THE GTA CYCLE

HYPE HYPE HYPE --> REVIEWS GO LIVE -> 10/10 10/10 5/5 --> ONE YEAR LATER --> GAME WAS WAY OVERRATED, THE DRIVING SUCKS, FRUSTRATING MISSIONS --> GTA VI ANNOUNCED -->> OMG THIS WILLL BE THE BEST GAME EVER

REPEAT

Something happening once doesn't count as a cycle. I'll be very surprised if V gets even a tenth of the backlash IV got.

Probably so. I guess I can see why, but I do think that is pretty misleading on their part.

You should watch some free roam footage. If that doesn't get you interested, I don't know what will.

This is the true sequel to San Andreas.

I think he like many others are waiting until the hype settles. Gta 4 got insane scores and wasn't that good so it is understandable to be cautious.

Not to mention it will be out for pc and next gen consoles so waiting for the hype to settle has several bonuses.

carfo without getting into the what is a spoiler debate, do you not think that some people might have enjoyed discovering that little easter egg on their own while driving around..?

Except this happened once.

There was also lots of hype for SA and Vice City and this sure as hell didn't happen for them.

Just came back from a midnight launch that only 1 store in town ever organizes, ~100 people in line. Not me though, went for the ps3 bundle I ordered on amazon.

I'm not for the parade of perfect scores that follows each gta game, but I am against reviewers who take a moral position it for being sexist, racist, politically incorrect etc and dock it points like the escapist review... just judge it as a game. It's a satire of modern life/culture taken to absurd levels, and anything goes, it's all the better when it's uncensored. The only criticism I could find with it is that Rockstar wants to have it's cake and eat it too, sometimes condemning violence within a game built around creating/celebrating it, but they are aware of that and have fun with it as well. They know their target demographic ,it's always funner playing the bad guy after all

"Yes, these are exaggerations of misogynistic undercurrents in our own society, but not satirical ones."

I don't buy it. The entire game series is a satire almost top to bottom. Everything about the main characters is satirical. The mission design is an exercise in satire 99% of the time. Almost everything you do and interact with in those games has satirical elements. If that much isn't obvious to you from the get go then all is lost because for me it is so blatantly obvious that it doesn't require constant reinforcement. It is the rule of the story telling in the GTA series.

Still, the comments section is a hole where intellect goes to die like. Gamespot comments are as caveman as ever. Troglodytes. Almost all of them.

I hope you're right because I don't want to play what most of you consider art. It's usually boring shit like Journey that barely qualify as games.

The Wonderful 101 is like the polar opposite of Journey. The game is all about its gameplay which is pretty damn good.

A 9/10 is not "docking points". A 6.5 is.

EDIT: oops, I read bad, I thought you were talking about the gamespot review

San Andreas, GTA's biggest map, has about 14 square miles. GTA V has 49 square miles.. Not sure what Adam Sessler is talking about here.

Destructoid has best review I've seen by far. Gave it 9/10 and listed lots of pros and cons and actually talked about gameplay. Said gun gameplay is still disappointing. Was hoping for a max payne 3 clone when it came to shooting mechanics because I loved everything about MP3's gunplay... But oh well, can't have everything...

Attempts have been made to improve the typically clunky combat, though to a less successful degree. The auto-targeting system is twitchy and unreliable, while cover mechanics still come off as dated and unwieldy.

Sound like Max Payne 3, to me.

This "cycle" has happened exactly once, with GTA 4. None of the games in the GTA 3 trilogy were seen by a significant amount of people as overrated one year after their release, and there's very little evidence that suggests it's going to happen with GTA 5.

Oh dear, Take 3 incoming?
I hope not, Take 2 is perfect. I hope it's Take Two or Take 2 2 or something if it comes to that.
HA, have you even played both games?
Whether he did or not GTAV just being a jerk simulator is A-OK in my book. Especially as SRIV was more Crackdown 3 but with writing you can actually enjoy. W101 when I want to play a nice fun game, GTAV when I want a wild sandbox that I may do some missions in.

GTA V has the most realistic kill deaths compared to most other games I've played.

That alone makes the game so worth it. I can't tell you how long i've waited for realistic deaths from guns.

Oh, it looks like I either misheard him or he's totally wrong. Thanks

sessler did imply that GTA V wasn't the biggest open world game from Rockstar. I think he's wrong on this one. I believe GTA V is the biggest map yet

What would be the best review to read if I want to get more information about specific game mechanics, like "Are there really only 5 Wanted stars anymore and no military is chasing you?" or "Is there an ammunition limit you can carry?"

I haven't watched any gameplay videos, so can you answer me one thing about the gunshot wounds: How do they compare against RDR? Do they have the same sort of location damage? Are headshot wounds just as gory as they were in RDR?

That's what I'm not understanding.

Was the hype for GTA 3 unwarranted? fuck no, it put forward a new genre...
Wait, was there hype? Well, they did establish themselves with GTA1 & 2, but I'd expect the hype for that was more like the hype, say, Modern Warfare got versus MW2 or 3, or Black Ops.

Lol!

I cant think of a game more the opposite of journey than W101. Its a game entirely based around extremely deep and satisfying combat mechanics.

That makes two of us. You drove around and killed people. It controlled nice, played nice, looked nice, sounded nice. What's not to like?

Gamers expected it to be the second coming due to hyperbole-laced previews. Even now the backlash is egregious--at worst it was an 8/10 game and people throw around labels like 'awful'

To counteract the hyperbole going the other way... it's probably closer to a 9/10. By no means a perfect game, nor an awful one.

The biggest reason for the backlash on IV wasn't the hyperbole it was an abject failure to note any of what people came to view as the game's greatest flaws. Thus people got pretty blindsided by a lot of it.

As for the "obviously an 8/10" comment, I don't have a personal scoring metric but it's unlikely I'd go that high on something that I stopped having fun playing after only a few hours. I'm probably not the only one.

He's probably remembering San Andreas to be much bigger than it is. It has 3 (relatively small by modern standards) cities and at the time seemed gargantuan. He'd probably be surprised at it's size going back to it now after GTA V.

See, now it's a conversation. Based on previous GTAs, I think its particular brand of satire isn't witty or clever. Also, satire is supposed to punch up, not down. GTA is so huge at this point that few things qualify, certainly not women as an entire gender. You need some kind of context for satire to work, some contrast. Carolyn is making the argument that that isn't there, so all that's left is gross stuff that WE know is gross, Rockstar knows is gross, but that alone doesn't make satire. Satire is making fun of the people saying the gross stuff. The target here is just, women. The intent doesn't matter, if it's not landing or if it doesn't feel like satire to Carolyn, it's hard to argue with her interpretation, but that doesn't mean you can't have your own.

GTA is catered towards teenage white american males. Everyone else is a target for the hurtful jokes. That's what bothers people.

Sigh.

Well, I think Feminism threads are going to get more depressing if that is the actitude that is going to take.

Sometimes I really believe the fallacy just a PC crusade.

Installing the 8 gig right now on my PS3. Just got the game couple of minutes ago I hate it that I need to fcking install this. What am I a PC gamer?! Glad this will be over with the PS4........waiting to play a game.

With this game costing about 265m dollars I am not surprised of the moneyhats.
Also, why do I always have the feeling that this game always receives so much 10s across the board only because of the technical achievement and giant scope of the game?

Months later you always look back and shake your head about it because the story and narrative are cringe-worthy and the violent, conservative, macho, sometimes rascist and misogynic attitude of the game are despicable. Especially now the graphics this generation make it less cartoony (like last generation) and more realistic.

Although this is my personal opinion. I respect every other one's opinion.
lol...I feel the same way usually, but they've actually improved the mechanics and everything from riding a bike to jumping out a plane actually looks pretty fun. I think the fact that the story won't hook me that much will always lower the score, but when it's all said and done, there's simply a lot to keep you busy for $60 if the gameplay is good, that's why I'm picking it up at least. A good GTA is like a good SF game, over the months, its fun to just pop it in and do random fun activities, this is why I'm personally excited about the improvement to mechanics. But once again disappointed about the violent/macho approach to the story, but at least it's not another "rags to riches"...I get that's what sells, but I wish R* would do a spin-off already, I'm getting too old to find this stuff humourous lol...
