Some people are also probably holding off on Vita until the slim hits.

There's also VitaTV releasing soon.

The slim is the same price and not really a huge difference in dimensions just... thinner.

It is sad to see that the PSP might actually sell more than Vita and Wii U.

2014 for Wiiu hopefully is Smash, new Zelda, 3 d Mario, x and a couple of other big games.
That should pick up sales.

I'm surprised more 3rd parties are nt making games on 3 DS. At this moment despite me wanting persona 5 on ps3 vita , it seems it should be ps3 3ds. I'm curious to see how much it will sell on 3 DS.

Porting a PS3 game to Vita is pretty low-effort compared to PS3-to-3DS and P4G has already built a fanbase on Vita. If P5 were to be released tomorrow, 3DS wouldn't necessarily be a good choice tbh.

I no longer think Nintendo/Sony are somehow at fault for the Wii U and Vita's numbers; Japan just doesn't seem to give a shit about anything other than the 3DS at this point.

Also, Vita is the only system beating its last YTD. Silver lining I guess.

Yeah but with a price cut factored in, I'm still "meh" towards its overall sales.

Really looks like Vita doesn't have a killer Japan App yet (going off software sales). Which makes me wonder about VitaTV in Japan also.

Proof that Nintendo absolutely did the right thing going after the MH franchise. It also proves that Sony is stupid for not trying to hold on to it.

I used to think that the 3DS successor would come out in 2016. Now though, Nintendo will probably pull a 360/PS3 and extend this generation past any logic, and release a successor in 2017/2018.

Monster Hunter just destroyed everything this week, damn. 3DS also eating everyone elses lunch.

I hope the PS4 can become relevant in Japan. Would suck if Japan became a one platform country. Yeah I'm greedy, but I don't want all my future Japan games on 3DS.

Don't worry, they will be on mobile as well.

Wait: why?
Nintendo DS is the most successfull Nintendo console ever. It lasted from 2004 to 2013 (when it was discointinued), with the new console introduced in 2011. So 7 years on the market "alone" and 9 years total on production.

The Nintendo 3DS was put on the market in 2011. If it will last as the DS it will be discontinued in 2020, with the new console introduced in 2018.
Why this would be "beyond any logic"? I mean: they will follow this path if the console will be successfull, while they'll speed up timing if (as I think) the 3DS will slow down way more than the DS did. But why look at PS360 as bad examples for a timing that was set by the 3DS predecessor?

See that PS3 LTD number? I would expect at best 20% less than what the PS3 achieved last generation.

Demographics and mobile cultural changes are going to put a big dampener on home consoles in Japan IMO. And looking at Sony's current strategy with the PS4, I think they expect this too.

I'm not saying they're bad games, i'm saying i don't understand why they sell 10 times more than any other good games out there. It's not like MH, GTA and COD are much much better than everything else.
It is like any other product. The most popular is usually not the best in terms of quality.

* Final Fantasy XIV drops are incredible. Have we seen any other games with similar sales after only the third week?
* Even though Lost Planet 3 sales are pretty terrible, I'm actually surprised at how much it did sell. It's a huge drop off from 2, but I was sure no one knew this game existed.
* Monster Hunter vastly outperformed my expectations. I was convinced the userbase hadn't quite jumped on the system yet so sales might have initially been more soft, but considering MH3U legs/sales, there's obviously a 2+ million fanbase already there.
* 3DS hardware should pretty much stay significantly high for the remainder of the year. Impressive software timing, Nintendo.

Just look at Jojo's 2nd week sales. If I'm correct, it dropped as much as 95%.

Sure, first week, but second week it pulled off a 59% drop, which is more in line with what I would have expected for this game week over week. FFXIV saw a ~95% first week drop to another 81% drop. That's insane.

It has RE,FF,KH,MGS etc it will be fine. Question is how well could it perform.

Thats because its sold out unlike JoJo.

Yeah. I made a stealth edit on that. I was wrong with my post.

The Wii U has Zelda, Mario, Wii Sports, etc. True, the PS4 will get all those games eventually, but the next RE, FF, KH, likely won't come out until 2015 at the earliest. MGS 5 is the only one that is coming anywhere near 2014.

It is just the first sign that FFXIV staying power may not be as strong as first thought. It was fully front loaded on "day one" purchasers, and going off the standard "I already maxxed out my character and am bored" comments I saw on MMORPG.com, it fits the pattern of basically every subscription MMO launch post-WoW. MMO crowd has A.) shrunk and B.) is addicted to 7+ years of WoW content.

Japan is still owned by smartphone games, or to be accurate, Puzzle and Dragon. Gungho has been making money from P&D equivalent to 3M copies of MH4 every single month for the past few years. I would be happy if a single dedicated gaming console can thrive against smartphone market at all so we don't have to play all Japanese games on the phone in the future.

So basically, by next week (or in a couple weeks, depending on shipments of MH4), the 3DS Monster Hunters will have outsold the entire Vita library combined?

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. I still love you Vita, but...got damn.

MH4 did great. 3DS did great. Every other platform, not so much. It looks very grim.

So did the PS3, barring a new KH title.

most importantly, some of those games are far away, and could possibly be weaker than in the past
no doubt that PS4 will be the market leader of the home market in Japan, but I wonder when (if some of its best games are multi with PS3) and "how much", considering the home market right now

I just would like to remember that I still think that considering all the context elements, probably it will be the only console able to repeat its predecessor HW LTD numbers, btw

Yes and the when I mean fine I mean the PS3 because many people believe Japan is just going to reject consoles because the WiiU bombed.

PS3 also had a higher price point, the above titles took longer to come out on it, had big competition with the Wii and MS money hatted several games, whereas the PS4 seems to have none of those problems (so far)

It was also the successor to the PS2. The PS4 is the successor to the PS3 and handheld and smartphone gaming is much more prevalent. Also no backwards compatibility so it will face the same issue the Vita had (it will compete directly with it's predecessor).

Uh... FF XV and KH3 wont be releasing any time soon (2-3 years away minimum for both of those titles). It's also coming a much weaker predecessor than the PS3 did. Along with this, the PS4 launch titles even in Japan are more geared to the western market.

Edit: Noted above, but it also lacks backwards compatibility.

Portable 3rd still feels like MonHun Fever's peak, but we'll see what happens with MonHun 5 if thats going to be 3DS bound now every MonHun fan has been forced in, or even perhaps some sizeable expansion like a MonHun 4 2G.

Does it? MH4 should be roughly on par with MHP3rd's first two days, it might even be a little higher. That's pretty impressive and I honestly wouldn't have believed a few months ago that MH4 could possibly open as strong as MHP3rd did. Time will tell if it's going to have legs as strong, though. With MH's popularity on a peak, it's very well possible that it starts to become more frontloaded as less people discover the franchise for the first time. Looking at the 3DS's total user base, it definitely wouldn't be a surprise if it falls short compared to MHP3rd, but I think that's okay.

So MH4 killed all the other 3DS titles in the same span? That's pretty funny since I was hearing that evergreen titles would benefit from a nice bump. To be quite honest, that's kind of foreboding for X/Y as that will crush MH4 in sales as well as stifle the rest if MH4 is anything to go by. Also, I'm quite curious to see what Nintendo has planned at this point past XY and MH4 outside of SSB 3DS. As for the rest, Wii U and Vita are in a race to the bottom. I think Wii U will hit it first.

It's MonHun time. No way anyone will play anything else right now.

Looking at software sales, the Wii did not seem like an alternative for PS3 owners due to what 3rd-party games sold. So I don't believe the Wii was a big factor for the PS3's fumbling in the beginning.

I think the PS4 will perform similarly to the PS3, may do better early on than the PS3, and may end up with an LTD similar to the PS3. As to whether that's fine depends on the person. People call the current state of the consoles as dead instead of the new norm.

Is this the first time the WiiU has dipped below 5,000? It's in a dire situation right now and Zelda won't save it in Japan. Japan likes Zelda about as much as the US likes Dragon Quest.
