Is this the first time the WiiU has dipped below 5,000? It's in a dire situation right now and Zelda won't save it in Japan. Japan likes Zelda about as much as the US likes Dragon Quest.
Zelda won't save Wii U, but Japan likes the franchise quite a bit. Ocarina of Time 3DS did around 600,000 which is more than any recent remake/remaster that isn't Dragon Quest or Pokémon related. I think Wind Waker HD is probably good for somewhere between 200,000 to 300,000.

most importantly, some of those games are far away, and could possibly be weaker than in the past
no doubt that PS4 will be the market leader of the home market in Japan, but I wonder when (if some of its best games are multi with PS3) and "how much", considering the home market right now

I just would like to remember that I still think that considering all the context elements, probably it will be the only console able to repeat its predecessor HW LTD numbers, btw
I really don't know about that. I think it will take quite a while for the PS4 to overtake the Wii U, if it ever does.

You know, I would have laughed at that a few days ago, but with Sony's recent announcement of Japan being a tier 3 country, I'm thinking you might be right. If even a platform holder like Sony is questioning the relevance of Japanese home console gaming market, well...

If it keeps going like it is now . i give it one year.

unless your opinion is that it will also sell sub 6000 a week .which is doubtful.

So MH4 killed all the other 3DS titles in the same span? That's pretty funny since I was hearing that evergreen titles would benefit from a nice bump. To be quite honest, that's kind of foreboding for X/Y as that will crush MH4 in sales as well as stifle the rest if MH4 is anything to go by. Also, I'm quite curious to see what Nintendo has planned at this point past XY and MH4 outside of SSB 3DS. As for the rest, Wii U and Vita are in a race to the bottom. I think Wii U will hit it first.

It's a bit extreme to suggest that MH4 "killed" other 3DS titles. They didn't exactly sell 0 units. They just didn't grow. They're still on the charts.

Also big titles can co-exist. MH3G, 3D Land and MK7 all co-existed in 2011-2012. One software doesn't have to kill the other.

It's a bit too early to predict how the delay will affect the PS4 and how much the upcoming games will do for Wii U.

The delay to get a stronger Japanese launch lineup could strengthen the PS4 in its early months for all we know.

No . Sony themselves said that they are not launching in Japan yet because the games are not yet finished yet .

If Sony would release the PS4 now it would be the Wii u all over again with no games at launch.

Sony wants to avoid the same fate as Wii u . if that means that they will be late to the party there .so be it.

haven't followed but is that the reason they've given then? could easily be bollocks and as there is no bone to compete with in japan (even if it was releasing it might as well not) they are just prioritising the markets where they need to compete, I almost guarantee had the wii u been really successful the ps4 would have released in japan this year

One console Japan marches on (+smartphone gaming you bastards who always try and tack on to my posts you're all on notice NOOOOOOOOTICE).

Portable 3rd still feels like MonHun Fever's peak, but we'll see what happens with MonHun 5 if thats going to be 3DS bound now every MonHun fan has been forced in, or even perhaps some sizeable expansion like a MonHun 4 2G.

WiiU dipping that 5k line. Vita suffering from "if i'm gonna buy a portable this week, which one do you fucking think its gonna be", which of course will get worse when Pokemon hits in kind.
Why MH4 sold pretty close to MH3P and MH3P's opening week was 5 days compared to MH4's 2 days?

I don't think so, that would be like saying "we aren't launching this year because there would be fuck all to play but it will be better in a few months, promise!"

And I still think it's worth releasing in Japan. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil and Musou will still sell. They simply aren't in a rush.

It could be on mobile also, if Square determines that's where the biggest audience is.

DQ always goes to the platform with the largest user base. In the traditional space, that's definitely the 3DS. However, mobile is a possibility too.

I could definitely see them hedging their bets and doing DQXI on 3DS and DQXI: Subtitle Side Story for mobile.

If you think about this seriously, you know that comment makes no sense unless: A.) Japanese Developers started 6 months or later developing titles for the PS4 (which makes no sense) or B.) Japanese developers take considerably longer to get titles working on the PS4 (still a stretch).

And honestly I haven't seen any PS4 title that will be a big hit with the masses in Japan when it does release. It is obvious that Japan is moving away from consoles, and Sony just used a "soft" PR excuse to appease the few hardcore fans in Japan who want a PS4. The PS4 is a western commodity for the foreseeable future.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Due to the February launch, Sony can release PS4 with a Yakuza title, at least. And it's true that launching this year with just...what, DW7 with XL as "relevant" would have been baaaaaaad, as well as having a steady amount of releases right after launch.

But the problem, IMHO, is that, especially due to the high price, there's not such a great launch lineup (late ports, contemporary ports, and Yakuza is one of them), and there don't seem to be good games coming shortly after the launch. KH3 and FFXV are 2015 (certainly the former), MGSV is on PS3 too. Deep Down will still take some time, but it should be 2014 fortunately.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Hedging their bets when all their DQ titles on 3DS are selling great and a regular main title would easily sell more than 3 million? Their isn't a safer destination for DQ than 3DS. They might try out something different, but I doubt they are doubting the sales potential on 3DS for a DQ title.

I'm pretty sure that Yakuza game will sell better on the PS4 than the WiiU one did. Should be a pretty good launch title for Japan.

Please stop killing the Vita, Capcom. End this bullshit and release MonHun for Vita as well, so the portable console industry doesn't sink further and further into a one system monopoly.

While 3DS reconfirms its status as the clear victor in Japan, Wii U reconfirms its status as a dead platform. Nintendo needs to find the best (or least bad) way to ride out the console for the next few years, because the console side of their business will be very rough.

You can reconfirm something when there is a big or drastic change.
As of now Pikmin 3 was the only little push (although sales were harmed by the general bad WiiU state fo affair).

...More seriously, I'm surprised that everything else dropped on both trackers. All those people spending all that time in all of those stores, you'd think some of them would say "oh, and I'd like Animal Crossing too."

Its more like "I want these games, but dang Monster Hunter. I wont even have time to play anything else. Maybe next time."

On a related note, if I am reading everything correctly, the Wii Fit U physical release has been pushed back to February 2014 in Japan. Looking at the release list, it appears Nintendo is going to go almost 2 months between significant retail releases in Japan- Wind Waker HD to Taiko Drum.

Amazingly, the North America lineup for Wii U is significantly better.

Pretty much the only thing that will sell more Wii U's is Mario Kart 8, and that won't come out until April 2014.

MH has the tendency to consume your life. Aside from using up stamina on puzzle and dragons I doubt ill be playing anything else for a while either.

I'm looking over the list of 19 launch games for Japan. The only 3rd party exclusive Japanese developed game is "Dream Club: Host Girls on Stage". The rest are Western or multiplats.

So Sony delayed the console because launching without Host Girls on Stage is a bad idea?

Right. I'm not seeing a stellar launch lineup right now. Frankly purely from a sales perspective I'm doubtful anything from that list will reach NSMB U levels.

We should have bought more copies of UMvC and SFxT then if we wanted to see more support for the Vita.

Regardless though, I don't care if the Vita has no Capcom support. (While a part of me would love to see VJ on it).

That and Smash Bros. But I'm concerned about how the 3DS version will affect Wii U. Sakurai implied the 3DS version may be released after Wii U's, and frankly that may not be a bad idea. Gotta sell some of those boxes somehow.
