Is Sony doing a mistake releasing the new Vita in Japan on the same week of Pokèmon?

Then the 2DS was Nintendo's surrendering of their 3D tech.
That's not comparable though, the Vita was made with the idea that it will be used on-the-go, as a handheld. The Vita TV is the complete opposite because it is a stationery device unlike the Vita. Nintendos move back to 2D with 2DS is just them cutting costs so that they can still profit from it at that price point.

The majority of peeps who will be getting Pokemon aren't probably looking to get the Vita and vice versa. Two different markets. Vita and Pokemon will coexist at launch
Coexist? You do mean ignored right? Releasing the hardware in the same week as Pokemon means everyone is going to talk about Pokemon.People will not care much about vita, especially when the stores will display Pokemon and others 3ds games more prominently during that week.

vita can co exist , just not on that week. Or that two weeks even. SONY should wait for the 3rd week after Pokemon x and y is out, at least they won't be overshadowed.

Exactly. Sony should've went and chose a better date that way the new Vita could've been in the spotlight with advertisements. Now it'll be fighting a hopeless battle against all the Pokemon hype and talk. After everything is over and done, the Vita would've never had it's moment.

I'm more curious as to why these things are perceived as being in direct competition at all.

Pokemon is on Vita's direct competitor. The problem is not so much as going against Pokemon as it is having its own time. After Pokemon releases, game and hardware sale will be high but not as high as during launch. The new design could have launched a couple of weeks after Pokemon when all the hype has settled. There would still be plenty of time for the holidays boost.

There's never going to be queues of people waiting for the release of a slimmed down version of a console so launching anytime isn't really all that important.

Only matters if you really care about those first, second or third week sales. Both cater to different markets and both aren't going anywhere any time soon.

If it was a entirely new handheld, maybe because you would want to market it heavily and get it out there. This is really just a newer model so I don't think as much work needs to be done. People know Vita.

It maybe two different products, but it's not like people's money can be treated as two different entities as well. In fact, since both can be categorized as "game products", say a person has funds amounting to 1000 in which he can buy Pokemon or Vita: in this scenario, he/she will be much more likely to use that 1000 to buy Pokemon and not Vita, and it's not like the 1000 amount will be magically renewed for him/her to be able to purchase Vita.

There's always a few people who aren't buying what everyone else is buying, and will buy something else, or can buy multiple things.
and that's all there is too it...

As long as Vita isn't bleeding Sony, it'll stay on the market...

I just hope we one day get MH for it...I don't really feel like plopping down another $200 for 3DS when all want is Pokemon/Kid Icarus and MH...I'll end up with both soon, but man, why all the negative stuff for VIta...fine console it is...

Because of a multiplat remaster available for better value elsewhere. Uh huh.

1) By the way things are going in Japan, handhelds are the future
2) FFX is cheaper on the Vita (I even think it's getting a bundle, but a ugly bundle)
3) No one in their right mind would play X-2 on a large screen and the Vita is perfect for X-2. It's just the way God intended for people to play X-2. On a tiny screen with headphones on so no one can watch or hear you play that game.

I like it when people watch me play FFX-2.

"Realistic" being; "This system should've never been made. Totally irrelevant and everything Sony does with it outside of discontinuing it is a massive mistake."
Who said that lol. Vita tv is a good move as you can see from the reactions from this forum.
oh wait I see the post now :p

Well all those things are true. The only ones not being realistic are those that think the Vita stands a chance at even being a competitor against the 3DS. Considering its current sales and game content its fairer to say the Vita is competing with the Ouya.
