The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

So anyone know how this game has been selling? Just curious as its one of the Wii U games I want, but don't have the system yet.

Poorly. Though we only have JP and EU numbers. Or only actual numbers from JP and vague estimates from EU.

This should only encourage you to grab it, I hope. Game needs support!

Yah this game is pretty fantastic. Played up to the
baseball stadium
. I am really not good at it though, every operation was a bronze so far. But hopefully will get better, already read some tips.

Guys, how do you get the screen back to "normal" when you accidentally turn on off-screen play? I hit the minus button again, but it leaves me with, like, a half and half option, when I want my proper bottom screen for drawing.

Once you're in the half and half, just hit minus one more time?

Like shit.

It's sad cause most of the people in this thread seem to be considering it GotY material and that's going up against the big blockbusters like GTA5 and the Last of Us. I am going to be buying the game in December unfortunately so I'm part of the problem I guess. But this game really needs more word of mouth and some commercials on popular children tv stations.

GAF, I haven't played the game yet, but is it just me, or is Wonderful 101 the "Kid Icarus: Uprising" of 2013?

  • Released on a poorly selling Nintendo console before the turnaround with very little marketing support
  • Initially middling reviews due to reviewers not having the patience to gel with controls
  • The game ends up being incredibly polished with high production values and tons of additional content
  • Ultimately ignored by the masses, but has a strong cult following

i think it will be similar but with less sales. also i think kid icarus has some real control issues while wonderful 101 doesnt (unless you ignore the stick option.)
The game sold over a million copies...

wayyy less sales

I think the only difference is Wonderful 101 doesn't kill your hands. I don't think there were any legitimate complaints about Kid Icarus' controls other than it murders your hands playing for extended periods of time. This is the one game where you should take a 15 minute break every hour. :lol

Don't tell the reviewers that, the controls clearly don't work!

Beat Operation 002. I actually didn't figure out how to block all of its attacks, but that's for repeat playthroughs, I guess, heh. Also, I didn't realize till half the battle that I could scoop up the troops landing down on the ship. Whoops!

Also, I want to say how awesome it is that the game's apparently autosaving at checkpoints or something. When my game broke on me earlier I was a little angry, but it turns out the game reset me at virtually the same point, anyway. Hooray!

Man... this game is awesome!

I don't know about you but at mission 6B I'm now mastering the shapes, almost feel like Saur :D

I'm still faaar behind regarding combos though.

Man, Attack Liner really makes thing easier...before I was running out of the Unite Charge, but if you use the Attack Liner, you can just keep drawing lines into the foes to quickly fill it back up. :0

Furthermore, I have that one Custom Block that converts excess Unite Charge energy into HP, so I can also spam the Attack Liner to heal. Neato.

I've also begun to realize how, like, powerful Unite Hand is. I wasn't really using it much and fights were taking a long time, now I'm using it way more and realize how strong it is. I guess all the other Unite Powers are meant to be used alongside it and to defeat specific foes while Unite Hand is your main power. Do other people do it this way?

I don't get the Prince Vorken fights. Nothing I do works, I get through them, but they're frustrating and cheap as hell. Everything he does breaks through your attacks or counters. The most least fun portion of the game by far.

In easy that's my favorite/most intense fights. I hope I'll good enough to cope with the normal difficulty.

Only the fist and Hammer moves are blockable. Block those and counter attack.

Finally picked it up today. This was a big reason I did. It does remind me of KI:U, and that's a very, very good thing.

I want to promote the first part of this post just because people need to learn of more ways to refill their gauge anyway.

Basically, anytime your teammates are attacking without using a morph, they get you back some charge. This can come from Attack Liner, from Climb Attacks (although you have to wait through the climbing animation, but when they start doing damage they'll even up your combo total a little), and from just being next to an enemy they can hit while you're doing something else.

As for the second part of this post, using the main seven morphs...

Hammer > Fist > Bazooka > Whip > Sword > Gun > Claw > Bomb

I think that's the power level of each morph. Bomb might technically do more burst damage than Claw, and I only rate Gun so highly because 90% of the time I pull it out for it's Wonder Stinger.

Still, it overall makes sense considering range and attack speed, with the outlier being Claw and it's combo point potential.

I don't get the Prince Vorken fights. Nothing I do works, I get through them, but they're frustrating and cheap as hell. Everything he does breaks through your attacks or counters. The most least fun portion of the game by far.

Vorkken fights are more like Bayonetta. You need to dodge. Luckily, if you don't use up all your guys for a morph while attacking him, then a few of them should be slamming into his guys and getting you some gauge back. Always try to keep at least one bar so you can dodge. Dodge away from his attacks, with the exception of Unify Boomerang.

So basically dodge, use a mid to long ranged attack (Gun, Claw, Whip, etc.), dodge, and continue until he uses an attack you can block. Block that attack, then pull out the biggest Fist or Hammer you can manage, and beat his face in for three seconds.

If you have that custom block that places a mine every time you dodge, you can use it to chip away at Vorkken at times when it otherwise wouldn't be safe to attack him.

I don't have it yet, but for 101% do you need to do anything other than just beating it for the bottle caps, i.e. do you need all the secret missions in there as well?

Also, how does Silver Savior/Platinum Paragon work? Would getting silver/platinum or higher on all the trophies in normal mode be sufficient?
Goddamnit, that pisses me off that I only read that now after seeing this so many times:

It's shit. Plain and simple - poor design, poor cameras, starts off incredibly slow. Just a complete downer.

Operation 7 is my favorite though. The
forced reduction in party members
in the beginning was actually a cool and refreshing idea and
unify naginata
is relatively unexpected, yet cool, ability.

If the camera is giving you issues, I've found that ball can help with that a bit, but I didn't find any problems with the camera in that level (if you are going to criticize camera, criticize 002-B and 003-A).

Get the required trophies all on a single difficulty. i.e if you get half platinum in easy and the other half of the game's platinum trophies in normal it won't work. It has to be a single difficulty.

That's what I thought, thanks.

Poor design how? When did the camera give you problems? That's not very convincing. It starts slow because you're supposed to try and build a team out of enemies. That's why you start off fighting the most basic enemies.

Yes any difficulty works. I actually find it harder to get platinum paragon on anything below Normal cause enemies die too quickly so getting PP on certain fights its a bit harder.

I kinda noticed that when going for the secret area in 001-A in VE and E. It's very fast to get through though.

Yeah I think Normal is the sweetpot to unlock these types of Bottlecaps.

Also unrelated has anyone gotten the Rouge Hero bottlecap? Is the last one I am missing for a character and I kind of wonder if using the attack liner counts towards the wrecking stuff thing.

I hope it is as the liner is the easiest way to destroy stuff and that's how I've been doing it.

Halp! I'm stuck on the final boss D:

The form after the Virgin Victory and Vorkie's ship escape. I did the first part (breaking the walls) and I destroyed the orbs on his hand but I can't damage him past that.

The other orbs are on his legs/feet, I used the whip and the hammer.

I loooooove the Vorkken fights, I think they're my favorite part of the game so far. They remind me a lot of the Jeanne fights in Bayonetta.

Alright, decided to take another run through - I take it back,
although I think Chewgi's move is a bit of a PITA to use properly IMO.

Side note - hit R trigger while the W101 members are talking and you get a transparent mask - pretty cool.

Its actually one of the easiest morphs to use and draw for me. Also you'd probably want to spoil that part in your post though.

I like them more than the Jeanne fights personally because they're not as simple as trip kick ftw.

but I guess the reason they're not as popular as other rival fights is that they aren't as immediately empowering as others. First time people play Vorkken he's probably pretty confusing. but to me that's what makes the encounters more interesting. Jeanne you can blow away mashing your first time and never have to learn anything
