Steam Machines Announced (Multiple manufacturers, 2014, reference design, SteamOS)

So what's everyone's thoughts on the third announcement being about input? Wearable computers?

I'll be upset if it's just a regular ass controller. If they could find a way to bring the precision of M/KB over to a controller form factor I'd definitely be on board.

There's too many games on Steam that require that control set up for it to be ignored.

With everyone dumping windows based PC's for superior Macs it makes sense for Valve to quickly bring PC gaming to the living room with their own mainstream console

Wow. Crazy, awesome news. Lord knows we needed another option(s). I anticipate record pre-order cancellations for PSwhore and Xboned.

This isn't a console, it's a PC. And Steam already works on Mac, so I don't see how people dumping windows for Macs (is that even happening for gamers?) would affect Valve...

It's about as much a PC as Xbox is

You missed what I said. People are dumping PC for Mac's for other reasons but one of the big reasons some people were reluctant because there are more game options on PC. With Steambox they can do their PC gaming on that console and use a Mac for the other computer usages

Can you install another operating system on an Xbox (any version)? Can you install unsigned software on an Xbox (any version)? Can you build your own Xbox?

I really hope your trolling because if people are dropping windows based PCs for anything, its for tablets and cellphones, most certainly not the more expenisve, less performance, Mac Desktops.

If we can get to a handful of hardware configurations developers will begin targeting these specific devices, and we'll see pc hardwaree shine.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Too lazy to look through the last 20 pages.
Does this mean that we'll get some form of widespread optimization? Some PC developers working to increase performance on systems GPU's that are running 2-3 years old?

Macs (well at least OSX) suck!

Apple is so retarded they do not even fix huge fucking flaws they introduced to that load of crap called XNU's memory management!
It is not OK to instead of freeing inactive pages in RAM so that a program can use that memory you instead page out the inactive pages and thus miss the whole point of keeping inactive pages in RAM in the first place and make the system run much slower than it should due to all the paging to disk!

Then their is fact that apple is lazy and slow with fixing security flaws, e.g. Sudo had a bug in it that allowed people to go up to a system and get Sudo access to a system and setup a remote shell (as long as someone had used Sudo on that system at least once before) just by changing the date.
The bug was fixed many months ago by the Sudo maintainers but it took apple until a week ago to patch the version in OSX!

I permanently banned my 6 year old daughter from using the PS4 for mistakenly sending grief reports as it's too hard to watch or talk to her
I've thought about it for a while, and I've come to the conclusion I'm actually underwhelmed.

I'd hoped for a closed box / console, not a "PC gaming spec", I can't see this coming in at the performance levels needed for the prices suggested once you add an extra manufacturer and their margins to the equation.

I'm disappointed because I'd hoped maybe here was something that might bring PC gaming / Steam to the living room for me, but a low spec PC isn't it.

And without manufacturer subsidies the level of tech for the price is going to be, IMO, seriously underwhelming.

I'd like to be proven wrong though.

When the post he's responding to is "forget PS4" the only exclusives that tend to matter are the PS4 ones you'd be forgetting. So pointing those out makes perfect sense :)

Yeah but it also reads like those are the only exclusives that matters in the entire gaming industry. You choose a WiiU over a PS4? Lol no Naughty Gods for you! Maybe I'm reading that wrong. :p

The last thing they announce is streaming from one OS to the other it seems. So streaming from pc to steam box (living room) OS + OS?

Is anybody else having issues with the Quest page? I've done all the tasks but it hasn't checked them off or anything and says I still have to do them.

I've been studying and taking a test today, so I have been slightly out of the loop.

Anyone mind filling me in on what AMD announced today? They said they had a Linux focused announcement.

Ugh, hope not.

If its anything like the patent earlier in the year it is a modular controller with the ability to add in a trackball and biometric controls.

what is biometric controls and did it had two analogs as a choice where the trackball goes?

Do you think games for SOS to cost the same as games for Steam ? PC pricing works because you have competition with almost zero introduction cost, which won't be the case of Steamboxes, at least at the begining.
I don't think publisher to be willing to give games for low prices, neither Steam to want troubles with them.

Yes

Here is an article on it

The patent was from 2009, so it has probably seen significant design changes.

Yes, games for SteamOS will be SteamPlay. So you buy them once and you can play on Windows, Mac, Android, Linux.

Its an open system, so you will be able to boot up your browser and still acquire games from GMG or Amazon. Uplay and Origin can port their clients to Linux if the demand is high enough.
