After reading the complete explanation - I have to say I am hyped.
I was never satisfied with the precision of controllers for FPS games so this could be a real improvement - coupled with the ability to play every game via controller this announcement is a little megaton for me personally...

I really hope people don't give this turd a free pass just because it's steam and Valve.

If this was released by Sony or Nintendo, there would be a 100 page thread about how stupid it looks. Complete with gifs of people trying to destroy it.

Ballsy. It will either flop completely or redefine how controllers are made. I'm not completely sold on it but I would love to get my hands on this thing. I'm glad at the very least they are trying to shake things up.

How do you jump then?

That is an odd controller

will need to try it firsthand to get a real impression though

Sounds interesting considering the feature set

You guys are thinking about this the wrong way. This is a controller to play "pc" games, valve has no reason to make a controller that already does what MS/Sony does.

it's pretty cool they're trying something new insteasd of making a steam branded xbox controller but it's reaaaally hard not to laugh at how ridiculous it looks

Pretty much what every negative reply reads to me.

Haha yeah. This isn't just some bad adaptation of a regular controller (OUYA), this is a whole new approach.

I for one am intrigued on how this will feel and if it does actually give more precision than a standard controller.

This looks fresh and great. Can't wait!!

also can't believe the grief pouring over this controller! At least its something brand new unlike the new xbox One controller

Looks neat, Definitely want to try it out. The explanation for the design decisions they've made seems well thought out.

I don't really care that it looks ugly (though it does) but I really can't see myself using that thing. First off, fuck trackpads, give me a physical stick or dpad. Second, the A/B/X/Y button placement seems really weird.

The only thing I do like (in theory) is the placement of the L2/R2 buttons. I never understood why those buttons weren't just placed down lower on the pad for your middle finger to reach.

Honestly, it looks like a pair of speakers that you could plug into an iPod or something. I'm not saying this is bad, Valve has clearly put a lot of research and development into this thing... but this is out there on the Nintendo level of controller redesign.

But this is designed for PC gaming in mind, so it could be the next big thing for all we know...

This is honestly exactly what I wanted. I was thinking more trackball and less trackpad, but hell this is definitely viable.

My only issue is that of the left side. I think trackpad movement will be odd.

I'm really really excited for the opportunities this controller presents. I mean, it'll make playing EU4 on my couch something that's _possible_ for once. I'm interested to see how it works in relation to the traditional 360 pad games, but I have the feeling that when it comes down to brass tacks I'll probably have a steam controller for traditional KB/M games and a 360 pad for everything else. Either way, I'm in like flynn on one of these bad boys when they come to market.

Looks weird as hell, but at least they're trying something new. I don't think we can say anything about how well it's going to work until people actually have their hands on it.

I personally don't like how it looks, but I am reserving judgement until I can actually get to try one. Could end up being very innovative.

Looks like there's grip-buttons on the back as well? Look at the Portal 2 configuration, and the "exploded" view of the hardware at the bottom.

In the key bindings for Portal 2 example, how do you jump? Or have I just imagined that you can jump in Portal 2? Is that what is left incomplete for the left trackpad where it has a filled O and then 'sp...' which I'm guessing is space bar

edit: nm, someone else had the same question.....

It definitely looks interesting and quite ergonomical, looks kinda like an offshoot off an old xbox controller, I need to activate Big Picture mode so I can finish my Beta invite

I though that the was the back of controller initially, like a Vita with the back touchpad... I'm not sure I like this. I enjoy dual sticks and tactile buttons, accuracy aside. Own a 3DS and iphone, dislike touch for gaming. (Not 1-1, I know)

The reactions in this thread...

Hackable, works with EVERY game, community can easily provide control schemes...sounds fantastic.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I'm intrigued by this. It could be the next controller evolution.

I for one welcome this.
Not going to toot it's horn and proclaim it to be the best thing out there, haven't even tested it but man do I love new tech. It will be interesting for one to try it out.

And to all you naysayers, those that spew vomit, you remind me of the people yelling no-no when the SNES controller got "to many buttons" and when they saw the psx controller.

Chill, seriously. Try it out or don't just don't sound so incredibly offended about some imaginative beast that stole your left sock.
