The first few pages are embarrassing. You guys call yourselves gamers and you can't see how awesome this is.

You are officially worse than the people who don't call themselves gamers and look at controllers weirdly. At least they aren't experienced enough to know better.

If Valve is announcing it, that means they have play tested the shit out of it and know it's going to work like it should. Valve builds and tests new hardware constantly, spends million building shit, trying it out, and then dumping it when it doesn't do what they want. If they're confident enough to announce and show this off, I'm in.

I like that it claims it will function on any keyboard/mouse game, that is a selling point for me. Can't wait to see the final version and try it out.
The Steam Controller is designed to work with all the games on Steam: past, present, and future. Even the older titles in the catalog and the ones which were not built with controller support. (We’ve fooled those older games into thinking they’re being played with a keyboard and mouse, but we’ve designed a gamepad that’s nothing like either one of those devices.) We think you’ll agree that we’re onto something with the Steam Controller, and now we want your help with the design process.

now all they need to do is announce it is compatible with ps4 and we have the perfect living room machine atleast for me!

Who needs sticks when you have haptics? Couldn't you create "virtual" analog sticks? I mean, it seems irrelevant to me.

Yep - haptics will do this. This is the tech that has been around the corner for touch screens for ages now. Extremely excited considering the lengths Valve has reportedly gone through in researching and developing this solution.

This basically - they could have revealed this a year, two years ago, but it's Valve.

How the fuck do you press the X and Y button without taking your thumb off the left track pad??

Well it's the same with any controller, you obviously can't use both sticks and press XYA or B, also looking at the default key bindings for Portal 2, the 'X' button is just partner view so nothing that will require you to move at the same time.

Portal 2 just seems like it might not be a good example control scheme, because as far as I can tell you'd need to take your thumb off of the movement pad for push to talk, and also tap it (I assume? It's sort of vague) to jump, which seems awkward. Granted you'd need to take your thumb off of the aiming stick if you were jumping while playing Portal 2 on a 360 pad, but still... seems odd. I like the idea of the trackpads and the haptic feedback. Hmm.

not a fan of the startled baby owl, but will give it a try. They seem so focused on supporting KB&M games that they seemed to forget about games that like sticks.

And while the haptics might make all the difference, I can't help thinking trackpads are no match for the resistance of sticks. Look at all the complaints about virtual joysticks on ios games (yes I realise it is slightly different)

Except it is broken. Some PC games absolutely require a mouse and keyboard and some work best with a controller. If this is able to consolidate both of these then that is a good thing, no?
Dual touchpad? I can guarantee i am going to hate it.

Either give me mouse/keyboard support or give me a goddamn proper controller. I don't want some half ass attempt to combine them. Do you know why i don't play games on IOS? Do you know why i don't use trackpads on laptops? Because both are doo-doo.

You've had hands on? Wow! Please post your impressions!
I don't need hands on to know if it's for me.

I either want physical joysticks or a mouse and keyboard. Not that it matters because my PC is already hooked up in my living room and unless steam offers better specs than my current PC i don't ever see myself getting one.

Guess what, it's a PC, you can use any controller you like. This is just another option. A lot of gaffers are stuck in the console locked in mindset.
I want a controller that works on all Steam games (like this), but that doesn't suck for the kind of games I buy on Steam (not shooters or RTS).

Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with my HoriPad3, but it's messy configuring it for different games so an universal controller like this would be awesome.

I am so stocked for this. If they actually pull it off right, it would be an amazing controller. I believe in Gaben.

People are always negative against things that are different. I applaud Valve for their innovation. This looks like a very different way of using a controller compared to what I have seen before.

The face buttons are a bit of a turnoff. That being said, I'd still like to at least try it. Intrigued by the idea of using trackpads in place of sticks.

I was thinking the same. How do you play a fighting game with this?

Map one or both trackpads into virtual d-pads that give you a little vibration feedback for each of the eight directions.

Map the triggers, paddles, and bumpers to the standard six attacks.

Can honestly say, not at all interested unless there are sticks. Don't care how accurate or tactile the touch-pads are - I don't see myself migrating to a stick-less future anytime soon.

Ok well you already have sticks with a standard xbox 360 controller. And it works with games like Battlefield, Counter Strike, and Call of Duty on PC. Go ahead and try playing those games on PC with a controller. Make a video and report back so we can have a good laugh at how badly you get demolished.

Steam OS and Steambox may be trying to create a console type of experience for PC gaming, but they are not selling console games. They are in the business of selling PC games. PC gamers use mouse and keyboard at their desks to play games. If you guys were in charge of Valve would you honestly be so stupid as to try to give your customers a standard controller? How would you expect your customers to be able to compete in any online games or be able to play almost any rts or hardcore RPG? They wouldn't be your customers for long because thats not going to be a fun experience for them. Thats why Gabe is making the big boy decisions and not you.

Fuck, it looks weird.

After reading about it I'm on board. It's impressive and I can't wait to actually use the thing. Saves me using motioninjoy and if it works as well as I think it will then this is just great.

I wanted a WiiMote/Move evolution, but its nice to see someone still has the balls to challenge the outdated twin-sticks paradigm (well, someone besides Mobile).

If the trackpads give a response that's anywhere near that of a mouse, as opposed to a painfully slow thumbstick, then I'll get one

Otherwise I'll just be sticking to my 360 controllers + USB adapter when I play on the TV.
