Sounds really interesting but can't really say much until I use it to be honest. Doesn't look that bad either.

I cannot imagine using something as awful looking as that. I'm definitely intrigued to see how much worse my precision and aiming will be without sticks but unless it shocks me and I find I'm much better with those pads then I can't see myself using it for longer than a month.

Well at least it's something we haven't seen before :) At first glance it seems geared more towards FPS, as the face buttons look a little hard to reach. I really want to try one to see how the circular thingies work.

I would give it a try and see how well it works, I kind of hate trackpads though :p but maybe the placement and using a thumb might be different

I think if it works well it would have its advantage when it comes to pointing and aiming, but I don't know how accurate it is.

I'm not sure how I feel about the lack of sticks. But I'm going to hold judgement until I actually try them out.

Overall, I'm liking Valve's "living room" initiative.

I love it*

I've been optimistic about touch on controllers and I think depending on the haptics under the dual touchpad they can get around the lack of feedback vs a stick.

A clickable trackpad for aiming, I think, could be far more intuitive and precise for aiming, at least in the small.

* well, I mean, I love the idea of it...

It usually appears that any substantial deviation from the Dual Shock Controller is frowned upon.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet.

I don't see why anyone should have much of an opinion on it yet. It's something new - maybe once we play it it'll be immediate why it's better than dual sticks, or maybe it will be inaccurate and painful. Or maybe it's like the Wii Remote where it has some benefits and some downsides (admittedly the Wii remote has more downsides).

But outright dismissing it is silly.

Curious to try it for myself. It's certainly different so it's worth a look from that perspective.

I feel like 90% of the people in this thread need to read the article before having another heart attack. If it works as described, this could be something special. I'd love to test a prototype.

Hmmm...I'd have to get a hands on with it.

I think a potential folly here is that hardware uses software and software uses hardware. This is how you get those Nintendo-like experiences that seamlessly work off each other and are just fantastic. The problem is Valve seems more concerned with emulating a PC with something that's simply not geared to play the software and the software wasn't designed with it in mind either. You aren't getting much symbiosis and in fact it may lead to compromising other well-thought-out ideas or innovations. Also there seems to be some button bloat.

Some of this thread reminds me of people saying that the Wiimote would be an unusable flop because of the Power Glove and that the Oculus Rift was just the Virtual Boy or old 90s headsets all over again.

So much crow to be eaten in this thread. This controller looks fucking amazing. Getting rid of the sticks and doing away with little plastic buttons is the only way to really innovate on these things. Couple that with everyone's affection for touch interface and enough haptics to give you a sense of place on the pads???

Based Gaben does it again. Can't fucking wait.

A controller without sticks? Is this like playing on a ipad/smartphone? Because if t is its going to be a huge failure.

Anyone who keeps posting this picture is just proving to everyone else they can't read and they don't know what haptic feedback is.

Sorry, thread got to be too long to go through all the pages.

I don't think anyone is saying it's going to feel just like that thing, but more that it just reminds us of it. That said, not having the feedback of actually pushing something will still be a similar experience to the Turbo Touch.

This was my reaction as well.

It doesn't mean it will be good, of course. I just wish people were less resistant to change.

but dude, how can you have trigger rumble if you do not have triggers?!

massive sarcasm, I am interested to see how this performs

I read the page twice and still am not convinced however I have gamed most of my life on consoles so i am used to D-Pads and Analog sticks.

Won't know how good or bad it controls until i have one in my hands.

Also did anyone else think it looked like a 1980's boom box when they first saw it or was it just me?

Ok well you already have sticks with a standard xbox 360 controller. And it works with games like Battlefield, Counter Strike, and Call of Duty on PC. Go ahead and try playing those games on PC with a controller. Make a video and report back so we can have a good laugh at how badly you get demolished.

Steam OS and Steambox may be trying to create a console type of experience for PC gaming, but they are not selling console games. They are in the business of selling PC games. PC gamers use mouse and keyboard at their desks to play games. If you guys were in charge of Valve would you honestly be so stupid as to try to give your customers a standard controller? How would you expect your customers to be able to compete in any online games or be able to play almost any rts or hardcore RPG? They wouldn't be your customers for long because thats not going to be a fun experience for them. Thats why Gabe is making the big boy decisions and not you.
Really? Because as a PC gamer i play in my living room with a controller.

I sometimes use KB/M but no everyone is a stereotypical basement nerd who sits hunched over a desk all day playing games. You think this 80s boombox looking controller is going to make you any better at battlefield over a 360 controller? Get a grip

How about you guys hold the controller in your hands before declaring it's the worst thing since cancer.

Ok, upon further reading this thing might be the next generation up from dual analog.

Actually this might be the closest yet to the dream controller I've always wanted, just with solutions I didn't think about.

Looks wise, it looks like I would hate it.

But I'll await impressions. But really unsure about it.

Though no d-pad does scare me off a little.. So many unkowns with this.

The problem is not the trackpads, people.

I wonder if they expect people to use a traditional controller for games that were designed for it and this for keyboard/mouse games? I could see it being good enough for stuff like Civilization, but it's hard to imagine it keeping up with a mouse for faster paced things. Also, I wonder if it can act as a mouse for Windows. Could help controlling things from the couch.

It looks like an awful compromise, something that will play neither traditional controlled games nor keyboard and mouse games great. I'm not sure what problem this is supposed to solve, do they really expect hardcore PC gamers to use this to play m+KB games in the livingroom? Who are they targeting this "console" at?

I wonder how to play DOTA2 on this.

I'm interested in it as a counterpart to the Xbox 360/PS4/Xbox One controller but not a replacement.
