This was my reaction as well.

It doesn't mean it will be good, of course. I just wish people were less resistant to change.

Heresy! The Dual shock is perfection given to man from Zeus itself! How you dare to suggest that it can be improved upon, aside of re-arranging its elements?

I wonder how competitive you will be with this compared to mouse / keyboard in fps games. And how good you can controle DOTA / RTS games with it.

Actually, you can!

" This haptic capability provides a vital channel of information to the player - delivering in-game information about speed, boundaries, thresholds, textures, action confirmations, or any other events about which game designers want players to be aware. It is a higher-bandwidth haptic information channel than exists in any other consumer product that we know of. As a parlour trick they can even play audio waveforms and function as speakers. "

God damn... I hope we get to see some videos of the controller in action.

Awesome thumbstick controllers already exist for those who want it. I believe this is Valve solving the Mouse in the living room problem.
Exactly, assuming it works that is. Looks interesting.
The touch screen seems slightly superfluous if the display is going to be mirrored on your TV. Sounds like you could turn off the display and still use it as intended, perhaps you can.

Really? Because as a PC gamer i play in my living room with a controller.

I sometimes use KB/M but no everyone is a stereotypical basement nerd who sits hunched over a desk all day playing games. You think this 80s boombox looking controller is going to make you any better at battlefield over a 360 controller? Get a grip

Except all of the biggest PC genres are not controller games. DOTA, Starcraft, MMOs, and Strategy games. A console gamepad for a PC living room box is useless when you can just use your existing console gamepad.

I'm digging the idea that this is compatible with pretty much everything. I love my 360 pad and don't tend to play games that don't support it. This solves that issue.

A controller without sticks? Is this like playing on a ipad/smartphone? Because if t is its going to be a huge failure.
Because lord knows tablets and smartphones failed.

That said, this is totally different.

Sarcasm?

My PC is a games box hooked up to my living room HDTV and I only play controller games for the most part. It works fantastically, like a turbocharged console.

Hmm. An analog stick for camera control is an objectively inferior solution. Now, a trackpad with haptic feedback is certainly an unconventional alternative, but they obviously had to try something different and Valve never releases _anything_ until it's gone through about 800 iterations, so I have to believe that they've tested this thing extensively and that it _works_.

This thread highlighted so many narrow minded posters. How can people immediately swear off an innovative controller from Valve of all people?

"but, there's no thumbstix" You don't think they have a good reason for that?

Some people just blow my mind.

Both sections are like laptop trackpads. And you have physical buttons. It's nothing like a Smartphone. Instead of sticks you have a trackpad who do not have a "dead" zone.

regarding the reactions here i wish
some of
the gaming communitiy nothing more than a bright future of smartphohne games. why are so many people biased? Crying about "boring 200m$ blockbuster games"but a new take on a controller that tries to get rid of a controlling concept of the 90s is horrible?

lets. just. wait. and try it out.

I've been trying to think about how this could be used for fighting games (the SFvT sale made me think of this), and provided the trackpad works, couldn't this possibly be a decent-ish fighting gamepad? You will have 6 buttons on the back at all times and the two face buttons by the right trackpad, so it might work. It would be very weird and force us to unlearn how we play fighters now though.

If this device can help me control Windows seamlessly from my comfy couch then I will have my PC plugged to my TV all the time.
They should also add an attachable mini keyboard like the ones in 360/PS3.

LOL at the negative reactions. The controller could be absolute genius. If those tracks work as advertised then no longer do the limitations of the sticks apply when it comes to aiming. Even a minisclue movement can be the fucking difference when it comes to aiming and if this does deliver, then FUCK yes. Also, RTS games support, ETS? I'll admit I'm a little skeptical about this. Hopefully GT covers this because this is what we really need in the industry, cause the analog sticks are ancient technology and they've got to go.

Yea I would have to use this controller. First reaction is that it looks like garbage. Second is that I'm not sure how comfortable it is. Third is it seems like they might have fixed/helped issues in regards to the 2nd joystick but broke everything else.

Yea I'm not sure about this.

Yea I admire their attempt desire to bridge the gap between controller and kb&m but this isn't enough and it abandons some of the the benefits of a controller in the process. It's a nice stop gap for those that can't bring their kb&m to the couch but for anything but a standard shooter, this looks unwieldy. Even their layout for Portal 2 looks like a mess.

Dual analog sticks have needed to die in the console space for a long time now. They're barely functional in the most popular genres on consoles. I thought the Wii Remote/Move would be a good step forward (especially the Wiimote infrared, which was extremely precise) but I am going to jump in and give this a shot as well. Anything is better than the steaming pile that is dual analog for any game involving a cursor/aiming.

The haptic stuff sounds crazy and new in ways that I wanted from next gen announcements. I definitely want to check this out.

Reading the post itself sounds a lot better than a passing glance at the image too.

Eh you'll still be able to hook up a regular controller.

As a m/kb player I hate analogue sticks, but I hate playing on a track pad even more.

As far as button placement goes, its fairly obvious only two of the front four physical buttons are meant to get heavy use for intense movement games such as competitive first person shooters. The two closest to your movement pad will see less use during play. Buttons on the back of the controller are meant to be frequently used aka lt/rt mouse, etc.

Tactile response and feedback are incredibly important as noted in the announcement and honestly, it's my only concern at this point regarding the controller. However, Valve doesn't strike me as the type of company to introduce something without extensive testing, research, knowledge and vision. If I were to guess at this point, I would say this will be an amazing input device and a must have for any couch pc gamer.

Put me down for two!

Junior, please.
Wow. Now that is thinking outside the box. I'm impressed, curious, maybe a little skeptical because of the lack of sticks / d-pad.

Can't wait to try it!

Not sure if GAF's salty or it's actually bad.
It's such a radical change it really can go either way. I'd think fear of the unknown is generally rooted in not knowing if things will be better or worse, and right now bets are being hedged on "worse".

And the Turbo Touch isn't a haptic feedback capable track pad.

What's your point?

My point is touch gaming sucks. Let's say they get the Haptic feedback to make it actually feel like you're getting some type of intelligent feedback (which would be a miracle). Even so using a touch pad for extended periods of times is uncomfortable, yay for rubbing your thumb raw.

I'm very intrigued. Can't wait to read/watch some impressions on it. At the very least, its nice to see them try something different for a controller.

looks like we will have to take away our eyes from the screen only to position our thumbs at the center again and again. Like in touch screen devices. Analog sticks resume to their original position if you let them. You don't have to look where you touch. That's why analog sticks are good.
