Valve announces Steam Controller

I'm laughing so loud I'm worried that my neighbors will complain.

Really? Because as a PC gamer i play in my living room with a controller.

I sometimes use KB/M but no everyone is a stereotypical basement nerd who sits hunched over a desk all day playing games. You think this 80s boombox looking controller is going to make you any better at battlefield over a 360 controller? Get a grip

Most people are probably like me, they have a nice desk set up somewhere in the living area of the house.

You are more than welcome to prove everyone here wrong and show us you can compete in a game like counterstrike with a controller. Hell i've got some free time, you can take me on right now. Me with my mouse and keyboard, and you with your controller. I would really love to demonstrate to you specifically just how stupid an idea of offering a standard controller is for a company that sells PC games.

I would make the same offer for a game like Dota 2, but it's not even possible to start a match with a controller. It doesnt work at all. Now this is just a wild guess from a guy using a tiny amount of intelligence, but I would guess that one of the mandates from Valve for the controller was that it actually worked with what is by far their biggest game ever. Dota 2.

They definitely get points for making a controller compatible with all Steam games. I wonder how it feels to use that thing though.

That haptic technology is mindblowing, can't wait to try it out.

I am given so much shit for using controllers for certain MMOs (FFXIV) and have been in the market for a more versatile controller. This might just be it.

Can't wait for impressions.

I'm also one of the four people in the world who want a Nvidia Shield. Maybe I'm a crazy person.

I'm more concerned about the low number of buttons than the touchpads. Overall I can't wait to try it.

Valve's development process reminds me more and more of Google. They throw something new out there and it doesn't always work, but they iterate with a vengeance.

I'm guessing to use this as an Xbox 360 controller, you'd still need something like x360ce?

Emulating MKB in some games is alright, but games like Dark Souls or Renegade Ops are nigh unplayable without an XInput controller.

What I would have liked, is those 2 trackpads in the dual stick positions on either the Xbone pad or the PS4 pad, then have the 4 face buttons/dpad in the standard position (standard on the Xbone/PS4 pads) and everything else as it (as on the Steam Pad).

This would have made it so it would have had everything, all the same features it has now for K/M style games (dual trackpads), whilst stilling have access to controls for other styles of games (dpad and easy access face buttons).

Looks weird as hell, kinda ugly as a first impression. Obviously I have no idea what it's like to use but I think I'll still prefer most games with the dual joysticks. If they've made controllers a viable option for certain game genres though I guess that's cool.

Except all of the biggest PC genres are not controller games. DOTA, Starcraft, MMOs, and Strategy games. A console gamepad for a PC living room box is useless when you can just use your existing console gamepad.
I highly doubt this controller is going to make it that much easier to play the games.

Just like i do with PC now i will use M/KB with certain games and controllers with others. Why on earth would i use this abomination over a 360 controller? I sure as shit won't use this over a keyboard/mouse. And people can sit here all day and say "well you haven't played with it" I don't need to because nothing about this controller is NEW, i already know i have absolutely no use for this because i prefer analog to this and keyboard/mouse to this. Again, not that it even matters because my PC is already hooked up to my TV and unless they can offer a PC that is better than mine that cost $300-400 i wouldn't even touch a steam box.

Steam Box is a fantastic idea for people who don't have a high end PC in their living room or for people who throw money at all the new shiny toys but it's just another underwhelming device that i have no use for and that's fine. The only thing to really come out of these announcements that has me interested is the steam os.

Valve doesn't need to make another PS3/360 pad. They already exist and work great. They made something that'll work for everything, including the hundreds of games that still rely primarily on keyboard/mouse. Might be a poor compromise but I won't knock it til I get one to try.

If this is the best they can do form a design standpoint, with games in mind, then I shudder to think that the steammachine itself will be like.

This is easily one of the most counter intuitive and ugly designs I can think of seeing in all my years of gaming.

On the other end, Gabe has a haptic feedback device attached to his nipples. It is pure genius, that feeling of an entire community rubbing your nipples.

It looks crazy as hell, but I'm glad they're trying something different. We'll still have the 360/One pads, USB sticks for fighters, and hopefully DS4 (please, please). All bases covered.

Remember people that this is meant to be a replacement for keyboard and mouse. Its not meant to be like the regular controller lol.

Really trying to figure out how Dota 2 would work on this...maybe a special config to have movement like diablo on console?

Left pad to pan the camera, right pad to move the cursor, triggers as mouse buttons, everything else mapped to various combinations of other buttons. I think it works. With no chording/modifiers, that's 14 buttons. Enough, I think.

Why does the Portal 2 mapping show the left pad as "WASD".

If I still have to move in four directions on this thing because we still can't code mouse aiming and analog movement at the same time they're really missing (one of) the point(s).

Looks ugly as hell. Haptick means vibration right? The problem with that is I turn off rumble. Oh well, it's ugly but it may be better then what we have. I like the dual analog controllers, but if this is better then good for valve. Will wait for the for people to try it.

I'm gonna stick to my kb/m but this is a cool idea. I can imagine it working fairly well at playing kb/m based games. Also my lord the idea of this controller flew over so many heads. Not every controller needs accommodate every type of game. This one is clearly aimed at kb/m games.

Will need to try it out, but just by looking at it, I'm not a fan.
This is coming from a PC gamer and avid Steam user...

We'll see though...

Really love the two bumper buttons on the back handles. I wish it was something PS4 would have, only because I think it's really efficient to have buttons that don't require you removing your thumbs from the controller.

This looks like it will be the arcade stick of non-fighting games. In that, for someone who has never used a controller or played a game before, it's probably a great, ergonomic, precise input method. For someone who has been using a traditional gamepad or keyboard/mouse for two decades, it's going to be too hard to get used to and will ultimately be ignored in favor of more familiar input methods.

All I know is that it's going to have to be really inexpensive for me to even consider trying it out.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
At the same time make one that is literally compatible with the entire library of PC games, not just ones that are compatible with Xinput.

Maybe... just maybe their API for this controller will mean PS3/360 controllers can work on ALL games.

I really wish they released the API today just for that reason. Just Cause 1 doesn't work with controllers and I'm sitting here waiting for a solution to be found for that.

Can't knock t hem for trying to innovate and it looks like it's more for PC players used to KB/M.

Still not sure about it myself though.
