Super Mario 3D World: New Trailer

I completely missed the "key" in the trailer until pointed out in the IGN video. Awesome.

...those were at E3.

Oh, man, I thought it was getting out of hand with people misusing "isometric" to describe this game but ign refers to the world map as "isometric"...

The most important part of this trailer is that they showed a lot of single player gameplay. My worry is that I may not fully enjoy the game because I have no one to play with and there is no online but it seems Nintendo has designed the game to be good for a singe player too

The 1-1 on the map looks absolutely nothing like it, though. It has grass, but it's a cliffside path surrounded by water, has white fences, no multicolor cuboid platforms, and those yellow tree/mushrooms from mount beanpole. It also looks like it has some kind of building in it. We've seen 2-1 hasn't changed appearances according to the latest trailer.

Good catch, but, we've also seen the map icon for 2-1, and it's the ostrich desert dune level.

So the rolling meadows level has been moved but where could it fit now? No space in world 1 unless it's a secret (which is unlikely), so maybe world 3?

It still friggin sucks that this is the ONLY big N release for the holiday season now.

IT better be a major winner, because if it doesn't deliver, nothing else will.

For the Wii U, sure. But ALBW releases, what, a week before? I'm actually not sure which one I'm looking forward to more...

By and large I feel the more nonlinear approach to level design in 64 and the more complex movement and wider range of jumps and movement abilities is what sets this type of "make your own fun" in 64 apart from Galaxy and 3D Land--the levels in the latter are more focused and linear with deliberately fewer ways to go about them, and at the same time movement is simplified, jumping prowess limited, and far fewer other moves. There isn't as much room in the games for the more free form acrobatics of 64--by and large, you are meant to tackle the same obstacles the same way. It's developer guided--64 is more player guided, to a point.

It's a different type of fun, but one is definitely not inherently better than the other. It's personal preference.

Well said. 64 is still the apex of Mario for me, but Galaxy was equally as stunning, and the first worthy sequel to 64 imo.

3D World may possibly be a Galaxy/G2 beater though, and I don't say such things flippantly.

Indeed. Christmas is looking Nintense.

The more I see the more I can't live without this game. I've replayed 3D Land a few times and I'm thinking about doing it again now.

I feel like I'd be getting a Wii U because of one game but honestly I never owned a Wii so I could populate a library of games that interest me fairly easily.

If you liked 3d land you will love the galaxy games.

I've counted about 24 levels we've seen footage from (being optimistic that certain areas are linked in the same level), and we've seen the world map icon of presumably 3 others.

I'm a tad worried that we've now seen possibly well over half the game (say, 4 worlds' worth of 6 levels each). Hope there's plenty of surprises, secrets and ingenious level design left. I remember feeling like Super Mario Galaxy 2 was completely spoiled during my playthrough. Although it's a small issue really cause the actual platforming is the fun part but yeah.

I would have loved that when I was 11 though.

Aww don't worry, I've found the day people finally become adults is generally the day they stop caring about whether things are "grown up" enough for them

Unfortunately by the time that happens you've sold all your childhood toys to buy terrible music, and spend your entire adulthood buying them back at great expense. This is why eBay sellers make a killing on toys from 2 decades ago.

BTW, does the jazzy soundtrack in the trailer also remind anyone of Wario? Wario has a pretty jazzy soundtrack as well. Well, some of the games anyway.

Bit of a late reply, but yes now that you mention it. With this music and the fact that the game is not set in the Mushroom Kingdom (as mentioned in the Gamespot video with Bill Trinen), it's a shame than Nintendo didn't opt to use Wario instead of (just) Bowser. Could have been cool to see those two team up in order to create a fresh challenge for the player. Heck, as some of you have said, Bowser is already using a Wario-type car!

Music wise though, after hearing the trailer and levels themes I have no doubt that this game's OST will be glorious again. It seems to feature the same mix of real instruments and synthesizer music that the Galaxy games had, only with a more big band / jazzy / bebop style. I especially adore the trailer song because of how it sounds like something that could have come from Cowboy Bebop and Yoko Kanno's oeuvre.

In general I couldn't be more excited for this game. It seems like the right blend of platforming madness and off path exploration. I also really dig the over the top cartoon vibe as well as seen in the animations, cloud trails when running, 2d drawings for character portraits etc.

This doesn't make any sense. It looks to be just that and much much more.

The people that don't make sense are those that keep repeating this bullshit. This game is nothing like Super Mario 64. It's 3DLand 2: Feline Boogaloo. And now I see people putting down SM64 in an effort to prop this up. You know, this game looks fine and all, but let's not get too crazy.

Their fall line-up as it stands now just doesn't measure up to what they had for the first fall on GameCube and Wii. :/ It'll all come down to 3D World.

The problem is all of there new ideas are bad. Sunshine was a huge letdown after SM64 essentially being only 1 large world with the beach theme instead of all the variety and forcing mario to use that Water hose gimmick. SM Galaxy was on the right track but instead focused more on linear platforming and going from sphere to sphere rather then exploring. Everything after Galaxy is basically cloning/building off of New Super Mario Bros

This is how I see it too. Well, I did enjoy Super Mario Sunshine though.

I never cared for the multiplayer in the NSMB games and I doubt I will care for it here. 3D Land was great but it was no SM64, a game that I loved in 1996 and that I still love today.

I already know the answer to this question, but will the SM64 fans ever stop shouting about every Mario game not being SM64 part 2? It's fine to personally want that, it's fine to voice that, but does it need to be done over and over again on every topic about Mario and this game? This is not SM64 part 2, guys. And there's nothing you can do about it othen than not buy it. It doesn't matter how many times you repeat to the walls that this is not "real 3D Mario".

Sigh. I'm getting bad deja vus from Smash Bros topics where all the conversation basically came down to Brawl not being Melee part 2.

Wow, people are entitled to their opinions and they are entitled to post them. Sorry if that ruins your day.

can not wait, but I wish they would leave those lame koopa kids out of this game ...their appearance in NSMB games has tarnished them and I wish to not see them in this game.

Luckily, it seems like this game has an all new set of bosses and enemies, so I don't think they'll be appearing.

Is there any way to watch gametrailers videos on the wii u browser?

Not until Gametrailers gets with the times and ditches flash.

Now look at this:

flagpoles2duy4.jpg

Finishing each stage with each character secret unlock confirmed? At every least everyone has their own flag icon. It's missing an indicator for who has already finished the level before like in 3D Land (was hidden at the bottom of the screen). So unless that displays somewhere else it might just indicate who the player used to finish the stage with last.

Oh gawd, I hope this isn't like 3D Land where you have to go through the game with every character and make sure get to the top of the flag pole to unlock everything! >.<

Well... i do understand this.
However, we have seen multiple bosses.

Such as the circus boss and the metal boss....

That would be cool. Would be interesting to see which character is the best character for each level to get the fastest time.

You didn't have to go to the top of the flagpole with both characters.
