Is PS4 demand so crazy that these assholes are already exploiting it? Holy crap, what will happen in November then?

Well it's going to be interesting to see how this pans out. I still feel Sony are forcing non console only SKU's to the retailer.

I can't wait to see the crazy bundles GAME will force onto customers.

It has to be just Simply Games trying to do this. Why would Sony force ONE company to do it?
Maybe Simply got the wrong stock of only bundles and now can't get rid of them without doing this? I don't know. It all smells rotten though.

I've spoken to a few retailers who are in the same boat, and have lost customers because of it but it's mostly smaller independent ones

What's worse is they're supposed to be at least pretty highly regarded...

I'm not sure I could name 5 independent retailers in the UK.

Shopto
GMG

What you "feel" is happening and what is actually happening are two different things. You can "feel" that Sony is forcing SImplyGames to bundle an unofficial charging cable that has nothing to do with Sony. But in reality it makes no sense.

The unofficial charging cables is clearly scalping but I still think Sony has a part to play in this.

I believe that the smaller independent stores may have over sold their pre-orders. Now they are left with this situation. The larger retailers would have more accurate information to work off of and would get first dibs on additional allocation of consoles as they come available. I feel for the smaller retailers, but if they put themselves in this position and are using bundles to get themselves out, there is no one to blame other than themselves.

I'm still not sure why retailers are complicating the issue with forcing the bundles on their pre-order customers.

So you find out half of your pre-order allocation are bundles. oops. Call your customers, ask if they want to upgrade. If yes, great. Divy out the solus units to the remaining 'no' people according to pre-order date. In the end there are a few 'no' people that won't have a solus unit, tell them they have to wait for the second shipment.

Same thing happened when PS3 was split into the 60GB and 20GB skus at launch.

There's no coercion involved. All retailers were told how many pre-orders they could take and it looks like SG either were given a zero or low allocation from Sony or the distributor but they decided to open up pre-orders anyway and fucking over consumers.

One article from a shitty website saying Sony are forcing retailers to take bundles is not evidence. Especially when the retailers have an incentive to push bundles themselves as it increases their margin. Considering that this bundle includes a non Sony branded item there is zero evidence of impropriety on their part and plenty of evidence against SG.

Maybe you're right. I guess if Sony were forcing this on retailers. We'd hear about it from other stores. We'll know soon enough.

GAME have already emailed me about 2 weeks ago and asked if i wanted a bundle. No pressure or anything. Basically they said Sony have come up with some new offers and would i like one?

Nothing like what simply are trying to get away with.

Demand must be very healthy if these guys are trying to skank their customers like this. Trying to get an extra taste of the action...

Well shit... but... why is the bundle coming with shit that Sony doesn't make money off of!?

The general vibe on the cable they've thrown in is "Why have you done that?"
I'm currently talking to the UK distributor of the consoles to understand exactly what has gone wrong, but they're forcing me to make an account with them...

nothing in MCV about indies complaining about Sony/Centresoft allocations. Normally they're big on indies

I'm a little confused about the cable situation (as are we all?)

If I was a retailer and found my configuration was vastly different to what I had offered customers, I'd throw in whatever extra junk I could that was of little value (crappy value cables, perhaps?) to try and sweeten this new deal that has been foisted upon both parties.

Maybe they're trying to rip people off (are they charging over the bundle price because of those cables?), but it's equally possible they're trying to up the value as a gesture of goodwill after being dropped into a real pickle.

Half these sites opened up pre orders the day of the reveal - before they had any idea of their allocation.

It's pretty clear some sites have simply sold more pre orders than they were ever going to be allocated.

Same with Shopto.

That's decent of GAME. Looks like Sony have more then enough stock to go around.

They emailed me to say my PS4 preorder is safe and will be ready for launch. They called me last week to give me bundle options. I said no thanks and that was it. No pressure, just giving me options.

I remember GAME doing this kind of thing at the launch of PS3. I had pre-ordered a console for work who had given me the money to purchase it.

I went to the midnight opening. It was at midnight all of us queuing were told we had to buy at least two games from the list handed to us if we wanted a PS3 that evening.

A really shitty way of doing business. I've tried to avoid giving them any money since, but the buggers are the only UK source of the Forza 5 Limited Edition, which is annoying.

That must be why preorders have been closed for so long. I honestly don't understand where you're getting this stuff. You've got no idea what the allocations are, no idea of the numbers already sold through preorders, but you claim Sony actually has "more than enough stock to go around". Do you have some kind of insider information?

SimplyGames issued a (lol)response:

Simply Games says PS4 upgrade offer is "largely a retailer-lead initiative"

“We are aware of some fairly major inaccuracies that have been reported on various web sites,” Simply Games director Neil Muspratt told MCV. “Whilst this is very regrettable, we have taken the decision not to get involved with internet speculation, rumours and untruths.

“We can confirm that ours is largely a retailer-lead initiative and on site we have listed a combination of Sony bundles and our own PS4 bundle offers. By and large these offers have been very well received, to the point at which our launch allocation has now all been sold through.”

Dick move on SG's part, but I can sort of see their motives... this is likely the last big money console launch they're gonna be around to see, so I guess they feel they need to maximise that shit.

Hopefully all they manage to do is scare off their current customers to other retailers though.

Really going for it today, aren't you?

Sony are prioritising GAME, HMV, Amazon, Tesco, Sainsbury's, The Hut Group and apparently John Lewis as I understand it. That's in the run up to Xmas at least, after that I am less certain. Between those retailers they command more than 80% of the games market. SG have probably sold consoles that they were never going to receive and now having got their hands on some bundle stock allocations they are scalping.

In Sony's place I would revoke their allocation completely and put out a press release allowing people with a proof of purchase from them to order a PS4 from sony.co.uk for the base price.
