XCOM just got an update to include the second wave DLC, might not have specific improvements for the 5S, but general performance on the 5S should be better, and it's a legitimate game obviously.
I bought xcom on steam a while ago, but never got around to playing it.
How playable is it on phones? It sounds like something better suited to a more comfortable setup.

Yes level 8 is the cap (for now).
The 'real' cap (the boardgame) is 10...I guess we will hit it with the next expansion...when the backstory will be wrapped up I guess.
To level up a character fast...just babysit him till all enemies are down to low HPs...have him strike the killing blow (only chars with the KILL strike earn exp).
The enemy packs are tailored to the medium level of the party...so even one enemy will be enough to level up in the first levels (1-4).
Be aware that, as per game mechanics, you can level up once per dungeon (because you must train in a city to actually level up and 'extra' XP are lost...this is to familiarize to eventual new skills you acquired), so to get from 1 to 8 you must do, at the bare minimum, 8 dungeons (so plenty of loot to dress up your new character).

Which characters did you buy? Did you get them all?

You may have said, but what team do you run with? Can you change your team on a dungeon by dungeon basis?

I'm not commuting right now, so I've dropped off the iOS gaming front somewhat. However, I have an iPhone 5S coming in the next couple of weeks.

Are there any nice games which take advantage of iPhone 5/5S graphics that aren't filled with Free To Play stuff?
Please don't recommend Infinity Blade, Real Racing, or anything Gameloft.

Very few titles take advantage of the 5s hardware so far, aside from increased framerate. Call of Duty: Strike Team was just updated with bonus 5s features.

I got them all, but to be honest just to support them hoping for new expansions (and someday the Bretonnian Knight).
What I use?
Nothing...my main team is just the initial four, because I like them more and that's what I played back in the day.
So my party is:

Marauder
IronBreaker
Waywatcher
Grey Wizard

I'm pretty happy how they turned out in my main game, so I'm sticking with them.
I was tempted by the Shadow Warrior, but it's no replacement for the Ironbreaker (now the character I like least in my party).
I'll kick him out when and if the Bretonnian Knight will come.

I know many bought everything and they just random swap chars every dungeon...slowly levelling them up and trying everything.
To be honest my wife would just kick me out from home if I would do so.

EDIT: After reading better your question, maybe you were looking for this.
When you buy a new character, he is added to the roster...so when you swipe your chars left and right in the town screen or immediately before entering a dungeon...you can select and deselect characters (you can do this already selecting LESS than 4 chars to do a dungeon)...so you can choose up to four characters out of all you bought.
Pratically...you move around in the map with everyone (additional characters provide additional 'bad events' targets and more inventory slots) but just four enter the dungeon...the others are supposed to be waiting outside for you to come back.

That's why I included the iPhone 5. :)

Ah my bad, I completely missed that. What kind of genres are you into?

Galaxy on Fire 2 seems to have been updated for 5s as well. The amount of support this title has received over the years is mind-boggling. It came out back in 2010, and I remember playing it on the original iPad. And they've been adding more features and support for every idevice iteration ever since.

Ok, I'm back

Monster Adventures
Monster Adventures could best be described as a roguelike RPG with loot, Pokemon-esque monster capturing, and arena battles. Through unexpected circumstances you find that you are a Kindred, able to bind with and command the various Monsters that roam the world. You send your Monster out into the random generated world to gather loot and new monsters and gain experience, all in the pursuit of raising up the ranks in the local arena. Capturing and defeating monsters allow you to change body parts and abilities of your own, from imbuing your monster with elemental skills to different melee and ranged attacks. But die out in the wilderness and you lose all that you've gathered on that run as well as half of the gained experience.

All these systems work together to provide the player with tons of customization and choice of how to develop their Monsters, from a ranged tank to a quick melee type and more. The focus of the game is actually the arena fights, as all the rogue-"lite" roaming is to build you up for these special fights. According to Foursaken, following the story that emerges across these trials will take from 12 to 20 hours and this doesn't count the co-op and PvP multiplayer options. Monster Adventure's colorful cute art style is wonderful and polished as the gameplay and nice

Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame is 90 cents right now, I'm giving it a try! I remember it got some pretty good reviews but there wasn't much of a buzz around this game.

Took out The Cave from the OP due to the muted impressions that iOS port has received.

Fret not, it was replaced with these:

As always, impressions! (already mined some of More_Badass' ones and Empire is covered, Costume Quest though feels lonely.. ;-) ).

Are there any games that support gamepad yet? Any good gamepads for iOS out there?

I'm hoping for an official gamepad release from apple and for some games to get that patched in.

Looks very nice. Been following this on Toucharcade. btw, is like every indie dev a NeoGAF member or what? It's like every other day, I learn of a new developer who's also a GAFfer

Costume Quest iphone 5 impressions

first time playing this. Love the writing, and everything is just adorable. Controls are tap and drag to walk (diablo style) and tap to interact. combat is a bit challenging mainly because everything is fucking tiny on iphone UI wise. font is tiny, buttons are tiny etc. But you eventually figure stuff out and its fine.

framerate is mostly smooth, some hitches but its fine, probably even better on 5S and future ipads.

Fun game. Would probably play better on ipad, but iphone is perfectly playable after a bit.

Will try on my mini when i get home.

Hey guys, my wife has been playing Kawaii Megu for the past few months and I guess she got a note today upon opening it that they were shutting down the game soon. Does anyone have a recommendation for a similar title? The message didn't mention a new game they're trying to force people to move to so I figured I'd check here.

Anyone have any suggestions? Must be some dudes in this thread who can get input from their wives if nothing else! I was surprised at how many apps she has that I've never heard of. Swackett was one in particular.

Never heard of this game before. What is it like?

So, one of our games, Into the Dead, is part of a new Mobile Gaming Championship for iOS and Android where the overall top scorers for each game will be entered into the Guiness Book of World Records. There are also additional prizes of Jawbones, phones, and other stuff.

"Play Into the Dead from tomorrow to be in with a chance at a Jawbone JAMBOX, and a Samsung Galaxy S4."

Rules are here.

The 3 other games in the competition are Mega Jump, Lane Splitter and 7x7.

Man, Marvel Puzzle Quest is so addictive. Spent 7 bucks with it already and I'm tempted to spend more, but I'll resist.

Silly me, thinking I could get that X Force Wolverine cover with a few attempts. At least I got Daken and Thor.

Another awesome game is from a GAFfer?! Into The Dead is amazing, thanks for the great game!

Thanks.

We have a couple of new updates landing in the next month and a bit including some new content and a new mode - Torchlight Mode - which is pretty self explanatory.

Great! I was hoping it would get more content. Any new areas to run through? Always thought a farm or foggy marshland would fit well with the aesthetic. You guys sure nailed the atmosphere though, I think that's my favorite aspect

Mind if I share that news on the Toucharcade forum or did one of the devs prefer to do that?

Is someone going to bite the bullet and buy Type:Rider? Last week I did everyone a favour by buying The Cave and warning everyone that's pretty much unplayable on ios. I'm a little worried this type rider will be all novelty / crap to play.

My impressions are in the OP (I like it a lot)

And here are some more impressions from the Toucharcade forums:
Absolutely loving this game. It's an artistic masterpiece, enjoyable platformer with excellent controls and educational all at the same time.

If I only had one minor complaint, it's that there's so much information thrown at you regarding the history of typography that it sometimes feels like it disrupts the flow of the game. I "died" once following a point where I opened the information I unlocked and when I resumed, fell to my death.

I'm starting to think that it may be more enjoyable to go through the different eras and then go back and read more about each of them.

Only played the tutorial so far. Gotta go workout, but loved what I've played so far. Intuitive controls are great, the art style is fantastic and I love how you collect pages throughout the level and can view chunks of history. Gotta feeling this will be game of the week. Also, from what I can see there are about ten levels and each level has around 4 sections.

Played through the tutorial and Gothic levels. This game is fantastic and smooth on my iPad 3. I love the learning element as well as the soundscape.

And finally...
Forget iOS, forget Android (picked this up on that)...this may very well be one of the greatest games I have ever played on anything. Yes, the LIMBO and NightSky influence is there and Type:Rider does the whole puzzle-platformer thing just as well, if not better than them. All 3 control types are spot on, the physics are perfect, the music is outstanding, the backdrops are jaw-droppingly gorgeous, and yeah...you're ****ing learning and playing at the same time!!!

Hands-down my favorite Bulkypix release (sorry Pix'n Love Rush!) ever!

While you're here, I'd like to ask how you feel about this Into the Dead clone. When I first saw it, I thought it was a spin-off made by you guys, then I looked up the developer's name.

Kawaii Pet Megu is kinda like a Tamagotchi style game.

Hatchi may not have super-cute graphics, but it received very positive reviews.

The increase in iOS 3G download size has opened things up a bit, so we are looking ahead to what might be possible, but no specific new environment pieces in this next update.

Feel free to share the Mobile Gaming Championship news above.

Want to keep on the downlow about other updates for the most part as people start asking difficult questions like what and when :) GAF is a little more easy going in that respect.

Yeah, has been spotted and has gone around the office on email this week. I haven't played it yet, but seems like a nice little spin on the formula.

Have no objection or ill will toward the developer. We have no claim over what we did. Indeed, Into the Dead itself had very specific and obvious inspiration from Dead Runner and Zombie Highway, so it would be hard for us to claim the moral highground anyway.

Some people seem to get uptight about clones in a "genre" that is underserved. We've be the "bad guy" in the past when people were claiming our Blood Drive console game was a "ripoff" of Twisted Metal for example. But nobody will make such a claim for the games that are much closer together in terms of features and content like in the FPS genre.

If they had called it "Into the Pyramid" and they had more closely emulated our art style, I might have a problem. As it stands, good luck to them.

One of the first ios games I ever bought, Castlevania Puzzle Encore of the Night, still one of my favorite ios games!

Glad it still works even without any updates!

Was GTA Chinatown Wars pulled from the app store? I went looking for it and couldn't find it.

Having a quick look at AppAnnie, the game was removed on Monday, October 7th:

http://www.appannie.com/app/ios/gra...13-10-10&view=rank&store_id=143441&vtype=hour

According to Appshopper, they had the message:

*** PLEASE NOTE: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is currently incompatible with iOS 7. We are investigating an update and appreciate your patience and support. ***

So either they're trying to sort that out now (which would require a pretty big update, as the game wasn't iPhone 5 screen sized as well as iOS7 incompatible) or it's gone for the foreseeable future.

Good game that, played it on my DS.

So the Marvel Puzzle Quest game.

I bought a new hero and he's rare. Problem is, I have no idea how to level him up. The covers that drop look preset to the starter characters, and I can't unlock new abilities without his specific cover.

What exactly do they want me to do here?

Wasn't even retina res. supported. Here's hoping they bring it back up to snuff. It was the best iOS GTA game (3 and Vice are competent ports but I preferred CW).

Codemaster's F1 Challenge is really pretty cool.
It captures really well the races spirit (it's pretty hard too).

Wow, you bought the add-ons and only use the initial ones? I was thinking of replacing my IronBreaker. He just seems to die all the time. Hes the Bard in my group, or Red-shirt!

My Marauder is only level 3 so far, but he kicks butt. Having 3 attacks, sometimes 4 and then using a bow he can clear a ton of mobs. Hes out pacing my other guys in xp.

This is why I decided to just be happy with the covers you can get from the Story mode and prizes from the versus modes. Have you checked the prize charts? They award some really nice covers through versus every few days, if you played a ton, you'd get a 4-star wolverine cover every couple days as the tournaments reset often (remember there's two groupings for prizes, ranking and just cumulative score, so you don't have to worry about being first place or anything, just getting to a score level). Maybe your hero's cover is a prize in one of the versus modes too, or will be down the road. Since this is still sorta a beta edition, they probably will add / change a lot of stuff along the way.

I forgot all about that game, at the time it felt like a terrible cash in on the SotN lure, so it's rather good?

iDracula still get's some play time on my phone, one of the first few app's I paid for on my 2g touch.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
5s soon :D Can't wait to dig into iOS again!

Bought Deadman's Draw yesterday.

A simple yet addicting card game in which you draw cards from a deck and keep the highest value ones. Some cards have a special effect (f.e. ''steal a card from your opponent''), and when the deck is gone the player with the highest score wins.

Fun! But I do wonder how the bug that you can't proceed with a game got through testing.

(I stopped playing yesterday after a loss, wanted to try again later to find out that I could not click on the game ''in progress'', only solution was to start the tutorial again, quit that, then retry)
