Hmm, what was that iOS game that looked like Terra Incognita (PS1 Net Yaroze game)? Has it been released yet?

depends on which ipad you got, but with how shit it runs on my mini (which sucks when combat relies heavily on timing), I'm betting anything less than ipad 4 is gonna suck.

I have an iPad 3. I hope the iPad5 is worth upgrading to, but I dunno. I haven't had too much issue with my 3. I know people say it sucks, etc. Maybe I am just more lax.

Ah, disappointing to hear. Guess I'll skip until I upgrade my Mini. Thanks for trying it and taking one for the team.

Also, I noticed on my iPad that Iesabel chugs somewhat... well, it's not super smooth. Do we know if the framerate is better on a 5s?

Man, Marvel Puzzle Quest is so addictive. Spent 7 bucks with it already and I'm tempted to spend more, but I'll resist.

Silly me, thinking I could get that X Force Wolverine cover with a few attempts. At least I got Daken and Thor.

I've been playing a ton. Cant put it down. I just hit 425 on this avenger event to get Thor. Ive put in a good 10 hours so far and havent spent a dime. Love it.

Weird, the He-Man game was free today but the sale didn't even last the whole day. Pricing mistake maybe? I didn't have time to post on GAF the moment I nabbed it but now it's $0.99 again.

I don't feel the pull some of you are feeling over Marvel Puzzle Quest.
I'm at a point where I don't know what I'm supposed to do. All of the challenges I haven't beaten are impossible and all of the ones I have beaten offer minimal ISO or level 1 characters that I already have. The people in the multiplayer challenges all have characters way above mine and I have no chance of winning.

You're supposed to IAP, obviously!

So the Marvel Puzzle Quest game.

I bought a new hero and he's rare. Problem is, I have no idea how to level him up. The covers that drop look preset to the starter characters, and I can't unlock new abilities without his specific cover.

What exactly do they want me to do here?

Shop, shop, shop?

There are probably still people somewhere in the pvp you can beat up on. You can press the red skip button when you see their characters to try and get easier opponents. You'll get less tournament points usually, but the crystal amount is the same 70/140. Probably the easiest way to get more of those in the game, currently.

Doesn't really work when you think about it. Hero points are rare, and I'm essentially putting them in a slot machine. So the odds of me getting that character are a little rare (since the card itself is three stars), and the chances it's going to be one of his other abilities are even lower. And all that just to get him up a single level, which won't even help his actual abilities.

It's just a broken system. Which sucks elements of it are pretty cool. It's just designed around IAP, and it's murdering the actual game for me.

Yeah, skip people til you find someone you can beat. They put out new tournaments every couple days, so you can win a ton of covers that way (over time). Even if you only score to around 500 points, that's still 4 or 5 covers. I just got an Ironman upto level 15 or something, 1000 hp and he does a decent amount of damage, and this is without even doing 1/2 the limited campaign, which I'm sure is going to have more chapters added. I've only unlocked Juggernaut/Venom, I still have Oscorp / Dark Avengers grayed out. They're doing a decent number of updates and adding content at a fair rate. If you only play around an hour a day, I doubt you'd run out of things to do for a while, it seems to me.

I'm not having any problems with the game, and find the rate it gives stuff out pretty generous, I've never had to use a second of the now 4 heals. Most of the levels my characters barely get damaged if I play them right. Chaining matches and getting crit tiles for 300+ damage a pop.

I made a thread about PiyoPiyo Quest but it got ignored, so I'm quoting my post here
So, I was reading Famitsu App and found out PiyoPiyo Quest came out this week for iOS:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/piyopiyoquest/id689177545?l=ja&mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4
The game is in Japanese only, but it´s really easy to play, even if you don´t understand Japanese.
piyo-main.jpg

In the game you control Crest, who tries to repel and defeat the monsters that have invaded the kingdom of Piyoko, where the little Piyokos live. Piyokos are the little birds you can see in the screenshots.
piyo-kotu.jpg

You fight monsters by touching the different panels you can see above. The sword panels make Crest attack with his sword, the fire ones make Crest cast magic, the leaf ones make Crest recover HP and the gold ones give you money, which you can use later to temper Crest's equipment and deal more physical/magical damage or increase his defense. The more panels you group together the better their effects will be. For example, if you group four sword panels, Crest will attack four times and so on. There are also two other special kind of panels, the Piyo panels and the monster panels. Piyo panels give you a random Piyoko, which you can use at the start of each game to increase your stats or give you other useful abilities, however, using them requires more stamina (you can have up to five stamina points, represented by hearts), and the monster panels heal the enemy and make them stronger, luckily you can get rid of the monster panels when using other sword panels near them. Like in Puzzle and Dragons, there's a little counter that shows how many turns you have before enemies attack, but not all monsters are the same, some are stronger and some weaker, which is why it's wise not to waste huge panel formations on weak ones.
piyo-gurin.jpg

If you tap the enemies you can see their name and how strong they are as well.

I've been playing it for a bit and I think it's really fun, thought it could use some more attention like BATTRIX Floating Continent, developed by the same people.

The game is free to play with micro transactions to get more gold and such, but they're entirely optional.

If you like Puzzle and Dragons and liked Half Minute Hero this game is for you.

Just picked up Ascension since it's free (at the moment? permanently?), and I think I'm going to lose a lot of time to this game. Never played a "deck-building" CCG before, but I really like the feel of it.

So, while I'm high on iOS CCGs (and Hearthstone's iOS beta is probably a long ways off), can I get some recommendations on other CCGs?

There's some similar games (Nightfall, Penny Arcade, etc.), but Ascension is the best in my opinion. You'd be better served buying some Ascension expansions and playing some games in the iOS board game thread.

Keep an eye out for Dominion. Supposed to be out this month or early November.

Buy all of the expansions, ALL OF THEM

And add me in the game (pray for death) if you wanna play some matches

There's plenty of stuff still going for costumed and Jetpacks on Fridays, a year or so's worth. Stuff goes up and down all the time, so there's always something to do :)

I'm working on some pretty rad Jetpack stuff right now, I'll be able to show it off soon, hopefully!

Ignore my previous thought. It's fine on mini after a restart. Not the smoothest but playable.

Well, apparently I learnt on GAF that I'm super picky about framerates (don't enjoy Pinball Arcade iOS since most DMD tables on Mini run at 30fps with frameskipping (simpler tables at 60fps are a joy to play, sigh) since I got called out a lot in the GTA Framerate thread, lol. Even back then Ocarina of Time pissed me off with it's 20fps and I could not enjoy Shadow of The Colossus until the HD remaster saw the light of the day.

Kidding aside, I find it beatable with turn based games but CQ's Combat is kinda has RT sync elements to it, does the framerate screw with that?
Cheers!

Sooo... marvel PQ:

I'm probably dumb and I've only played a couple of matches (ie missions) but as a PQ "veteran" I can't say I understand the "use power-up to inflict damage" game mechanic well: when I go and use it, it says it'll deal X amount of damage and shatter the respective color "mana gems", so why they won't actually shatter after that and let me have my combos going? Actually, they did shatter once but I don't know why, ahah. Mostly I just deal the damage, get my mana drained but the gems stay intact.

edit: nvm, got it.
But the text, GUI and everything really is really bad, look amateurish to the point of being fangame-level, IMO.
For example, why the fuck do I need to scroll each time left and right to see what mine or my enemies' mana pool looks like?! I just hope the "fault" lies in this being a "preview" kinda-beta build, but man they've got long way to go.

Depends on the power. Iron Man's red gem power just deals damage and doesn't shatter the gems on the board. Storms green gem power shatters gems and deals damage based on what was shattered.

Yeah, gotcha, problem is I don't know if it was a bug but the text coming up *in-game* for the Repulsor Blast still said "you're going to deal blab la damage and shatter etc.", that's why I was confused. Then I actually went in the horrible character info panels section and read the correct text and that of the other powers.
Just got Modern Storm now. This is the worst GUI I've ever seen for a prominent release on iOS together with good old Pinball Arcade, except it doesn't have the same impact on there while for MPQ it's pretty fucking important they improve it ASAP,

Yeah, just resist the lure of buying premium characters. I didn't, but at least I got Daken (I like him) and two Thor covers.

Funny enough, I got two 3 stars characters by going the 500 iso slot machine instead of the premium one. Dr. Doom and another character I've never heard of.

It's better to stick to 2 stars characters though. They are easier to level up. So, while 3 stars characters are stronger right of the bat, unless you want to buy IAP they will be much harder to level up (because you will need premium coins). Well, except for X-Force Wolverine. He's so overpowered that you probably won't have to level him up a lot.

Yesterday the game had a stealth update which lowered the health packs to 4 and nerfed Iron Man. They also raised the price of IAP and now claim they are on sale when they actually are the same price they were before. Pretty disgusting.

I got them all, but to be honest just to support them hoping for new expansions (and someday the Bretonnian Knight).

So I picked up the Warrior Priest. He is nice, but he has a lot of random things going on that makes him unreliable bigtime! I am not sure if I like that much.

I realized that buying a premium character would be pointless, because there's no sustainable way to get covers, so yeah, I just wisely stuck to the characters they hand out as normal rewards because you get tons of those.

I don't find the stealth update, which is a bit dumb way to describe it, as these types of games need the ability to update balance changes without going through apple and they fully document the update's changes in their forums. It's quite normal for a new game to get changes, especially at first when things may need tweaking. Keep in mind Iron Man is not really nerfed too much, his armor/attack yellow power still provides the same level of protection, just in less tiles. I actually found having the protection spread out over so many tiles to be a bit much myself, and like this new way better. He's still a powerhouse with his 300+ damage beam, 200+ damage repulsor blast and his armor assault attack, and I only have him around level 15 out of 50.

The healing thing doesn't bother me either, you can heal your characters plenty of ways if you run out (and they replenish for free, so that's nice they didn't make you buy refills). I've never even used 2 at a time.

then just play it on pc at that point lol. its not a long game. its mostly playable, but when your guy is on fire due to DoT, then the timing gets funky, even on iphone 5.

How is Costume Quest on the 5S? Anyone tried yet?

Unrelated also, but did they ever get the FF Tactics widescreen mode fixed? Debating between playing on my phone or my Vita...

They updated all the sprites to higher retina-like quality, and the game overall I'd say looks a lot better on the iPhone than Vita (no jagged edges on the 3D terrain either), but you obviously have to deal with smaller text due to the smaller screen size.

I think Costume Quest will see a performance related update at some point in the near future from what I've read about it. I've seen various comments about it running fine on an iPad 2 to running a little choppy on a 5S, so I'm sure they can still optimize it a bit better. I've seen complaints that the UI for the battle mode could be improved a bit too, but I'm fairly optimistic it'll see some post-release support.

No, the graphics has been updated but there's no widescreen support. It's not that annoying though. It was more irritating in other games.

Good that I didn't get that Costume Quest game. My friends played it and told me to stay away, now people have issues with the framerate. Will check it out when it goes on sale. Dropchord dropped very quickly.

Monster meltdown (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/monster-meltdown/id593448195?mt=8 ) is currently free, and it's really good: polished style, graphics, playability, and no iap as far as I could tell.

Basically a puzzle game where you play as a soviet janitor capturing extradimensional monsters through teleporting yourself (and the monsters) around the level. Monsters have different behaviours and you have to trick them into the portals. Classic 3-stars award system with secondary and tertiary goals.

Was this game already covered in the past? I didn't know it and find it highly enjoyable. I would recommend it, even at the full 99c price.

Can Duet be added to the OP? It's masterful. Now comes the obligatory praise and gushing, in 3,2,1:
Duet is just wonderfully minimalist, a fun challenging game that tests your skills. It's always thrilling and intense and has a lot of content: a lengthy nine stage campaign, an endless mode, and then like Polara, replaying the levels challenges the player in a new way. It feels more like a puzzle game compared to games like Super Hexagon and Pivvot. It's really something how each stage takes such a simple mechanic in a new direction. And I love that there's an actual campaign and it's just not an endless mode.

While Duet is in the same spectrum of games as SH, it's very different. SH was very twitchy and about pushing your reactions to the limit

On the other hand, Duet is (so far) slow paced and more puzzle like. Levels aren't randomized so you're able to learn the patterns and actually feel a sense of progression. The game has a nice difficulty curve and each stage throws something new your way.

There's something so satisfying about this game, even more than Boson, SH, Impossible Road. How fluidly your spheres move, the graceful dance-like evasion between and around obstacles, the little narrative blurbs that hint at what's ahead, the contrast between your colorful failures and the white obstacles...it all just makes Duet feel even more special than those other games

One of the best IOS purchases I've ever made
