I love quicksaves, my beef with how it's done in NSMB is the fact that you have to save yourself or beat a tower otherwise it just doesn't save or show an option to save so at times i will quit the game and lose progress because the game does not have an autosave feature (to my knowledge.)

And yes i know this is partly my own stupidity for forgetting to save.
Am I remembering wrong or does nsmbu have a quick save option? I could swear it does.

For the longest time I couldn't tell if those particle effects were billboards or were actually lighted meshes. This screenshots suggests the latter; you can see it clipping on the ground-pound smoke.

Artifacts, eh? Probably not your component output. Sounds like your Wii's GPU is fried. Happened to my first Wii. Thing gets too hot with WiiConnect24 on. It starts off like this:

And eventually turns to this:
ZZSGXtH.jpg

Yeah that's exactly what's happening. Oddly enough, it doesn't occur with the composite output, only component. It's a well known issue apparently. It's a good enough excuse to buy a Wii U as a replacement anyway ;). Having Mario Galaxy and 3D World playable on the same console won't be such a bad thing

I'm honestly not a big fan of autosaves. They are good for some games, but a lot of the time I want to have control over my save files. I like being able to quit and revert to a previous save. I don't trust any autosave games and usually manually save before I quit anyway. It feels weird not to.

Ah, my damn Wii does that, too. It sucks ass but I don't notice it so much on brighter games.

On topic: This game looks absolutely amazing.

I like the art direction of the para-dry-bones, specifically the eyes. It feels like some of the earlier 3D Mario art direction lost its creepy surreal qualities (like the eels from Mario 64 or the piano) in the transition to a more fully realized cartoon world, but the para-dry-bones bring some of that out. And I hope to see more of that come out.

I'm also wishing there's a rain level like the original Donkey Kong Country's Northern Hemispheres. It starts calm, then drizzles, and then rains, and then ends in torrential downpour.

Everything is still too square though.

Doesn't the "quick save" in NSMBU mean that you can't quick save in any other games? Like the Wii U only holds one "quick save" at a time?

If that is the case it is a bad, bad system. I think it should auto save after every level. Sometimes I don't feel like/have the time to play 3-4 levels to get to a save point.

Erm, I don't know where you got that info from, but it's wrong

The quick save in NSMBU allows you to save anywhere, but as soon as you load that save file the save is deleted. This means you can't use quick saves as a safety net and keep reloading.

From music to controller options, 3D map, amount of power ups, multiplayer, specific character abilities, humor, references to all previous Mario games... Mario 3D World screams AMBITION.

Probably getting a Wii U this year after I get the PS4 and 3DS. Well I won't buy it, my dad will. Lol. Man, I can't wait to play this game.

Ok, this game looks amazing and varied, but I don't think it's very ambitious. Galaxy and 3DLand were probably more ambitious. I think Nintendo is kinda playing it safe by releasing a 3DL sequel over a bigger 3D Mario game.

I don't quite understand how it works, but I thought you could only save after towers? This isn't really the place to discuss this though, so I'll take it to the NSMBU community.

I'm still exploring the ins and outs of my Wii U

After the latest ND trailer, this game started to impress me. I was a little disappointed at the reveal before because it looked bland compared to previous 3D Marios but now it looks like the game has a lot of variety in its environments and the things you can do in them.

Yes. However, only if you live in 2005 and the 360 just launched. When all developers could do was to hide bad looking games behind out of place glitter effects...

But seriously, the art direction is an insult to the whole series before NSMBW.
Cut Mario and goombas out of the pictures and you might as well tell people it's the next Pacman platformer no one's going to remember, or Jett Rocket 2 - there wouldn't be any objections, it's that unremarkable. No ambition, no soul in this game's presentation. First mainline Mario that screams nothing but MARKET RESEARCH.
Hopefully they'll give the Tokyo team more freedom on the next project that has nothing to do with Mario anymore...

Wow, if they had shown this kind of stuff from the start, I think my feelings (and many others) would have been quite different.

4 simultaneous and distinct playable characters in a 3D Mario: Meh.
lens flare, glow, and water effects: Take my money!

Agreed. Looks like they're doing what they can within the 3DL framework, but it's still a self-imposed limitation. "Ambition" isn't the first thing I think of. "Polish" or "refinement" are more apt.

What about every other things I listed to support the ambition claim, that have nothing to do with the refinement of the 3D Land fixed isometric camera view?

3D Land has a really good framework, but the levels in the game are small in scope. The game in general is kinda small in scope. Great game, but it would've been a bummer if Nintendo stopped that style of 3D Mario right then and there.

So to see it flesh out to this extent is pretty exciting!

The visuals in this game are what I have dreamed of seeing in all my years of gaming. I look at these screen shots and can't help but smile.

The quick-save in New Super Mario Bro.s U allows you to save, quit and then return to that same place in the map. When you return the quick-save is deleted. You can only save after a tower/castle. It kinda sucks, but considering that the New series was a "rebirth" of sorts of the original ,on which you couldn't save at all; I guess it was made that way to force people to continue playing. :p

Is not a limitation of the Wii U, but a design choice. It also varies by game, has nothing to do with the Wii U. The Wii U per se can hold as many quick saves as needed.
