DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Dead

well not really...yet
At 4:00. the difference between the two is night and day

And the scene with the Plane breaking up, the X1 just falls flat on its face with the frame rate...

The difference in AA between the two is pretty glaring overall.

X1 looks good obviously, but it's a pretty obvious gap IMO

But the differences we saw don't just stop at resolution. Both versions are treated to post-processing anti-aliasing too, seemingly equivalent to the refined, high setting on PC. However, this doesn't tell the whole story. As you may notice in our screengrabs, the actual results on PS4 lack the corresponding level of crystal clarity we'd expect of such a significant resolution boost. This should surely be a home run for Sony's console, but what is likely to be a software-based upscale to 1080p delivers less-than-stellar returns, and for better or worse leaves the Xbox One with an often crisper looking, albeit much more aliased image.

What is curious is the level of "pop" given to the Xbox One's textures, where - bizarrely - artwork often seems to be more detailed than on PlayStation 4. In high contrast scenes, we sometimes see a kind of halo effect around some detail, which may suggest some kind of artificial detail-boosting post-process. Whether this is part of Microsoft's new upscaling tech remains to be seen, but we were reminded of the Medal of Honor effect seen in the Darbee Darblet review. However, what is added to texture detail also seems to be applied to XO's most ugly element - its highly noticeable sub-pixel break-up.

This is facinating.

Blacks are crushed in the Xbox One version, but I think it might still look better...

I want better screen comparisons. DF fucked this up.

So, apparently Kevin Dent is still saying it's native 1080p on XB1, even as people are linking him to all the articles. He claims a dev told him that it was native 1080p.

xbox looks a bit sharper imo but i think the lighting is better on ps4, stuff is actuall visible in shadows but on x1 it just goes dark

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
WhyTF is the PS4 version washed out? This happened all last gen with PS3 games in comparisons too. The colours are dull.

Textures look the same and the resolution looks the same, but the lighting looks far far better on the PS4, especially noticeable on people's faces.

Needless to say, there are some basic differences in image quality that need knocking on the head right away. Chief among them is the hot topic of internal resolution, where we determine that the Xbox One code is indeed running at 1280x720. If this is set in stone for release - as is likely - the Microsoft version is poised to give us the most aliasing of the two next-gen platforms by a noticeable degree, and is only a stone's throw from the sub-720p resolutions of current-gen releases. On the other hand, the PS4 version delivers a whopping 1600x900 resolution in all modes, giving it a 50 per cent lead in output pixels overall. As well as cutting down on jagged edges, this reduces the amount of pixel shimmer we see in motion on complex shaders or thin geometry, with distant power lines, scaffolding and other elements with sub-pixel elements creating unwanted flickering on Xbox One.

I showed my girlfriend the video and asked her to choose. She knows nothing about graphics and resolution. She said XBO looks the best, for the most part.

Xbox One has way better color (gamma levels, maybe?). Other than that, there's a bit more detail on PS4.

Both look shitty compared to PC. =(

Different, not better. Apparentely they have used different gamma settings, which is just a shameful beginner's mistake.

Xb1 looks better to me...

Apparently it may be due to the upscaling...

Why does the Xbox One look better in that first video? Crisper.

They did not adjust the gamma levels in the PS4 capture and left it at default. The same thing that Gametrailers pulled back in the day. They insisted on not adjusting the gamma levels for the PS3 to keep it 'fair', resulting in every PS3 video looking washed out. In an image quality comparison, they should be adjusted to look as close as possible so a comparison between the technical aspects of the game is possible.

The Xbox version is considerably darker. If the brightness settings were tweaked, I think the PS4 version wouldn't look so washed out.

Yeah, I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to do a comparison with different brightness/gamma levels.

Wow.. the X1 version looked sharper and the lighting was great... PS4 looked more washed out. Color me surprised... they both look great.. .but I thought the PS4 version was on the right at first.

Dat Balance!

"All in all, we can only give a preliminary outline of how Battlefield 4 will run on next-gen consoles, but there's plenty here that should remain the case for the final release in November. Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, in this near-finalised state, the PS4 offers a superior experience on several fronts. The resolution is higher at 1600x900, as compared to the tried and tested 1280x720 on Xbox One, suffering as it does for more visible aliasing artefacts. Visually, the PS4 has a marked advantage with ambient occlusion effects too, which simply isn't matched on Microsoft's platform with the build we played. "

DF seems to be doublespeaking in the article and the video gamma is off making things look weird.

Who OKed the comparison with the gamma like that?

Stop it, MS.

Never compare the brightness and contrast base on these videos.

Everyone's TV color look different so PS4 can get that high contrast look and XO can also get the 'wash out' look depending on your TV's setting.

the scenes with the antennas and stuff was pretty glaring, the lower res and less AA was pretty obvious.

It was hard looking back in forth on a fullscreen 23" monitor @ 1080p. didnt look at screens yet tho

Amazing performance on the PS4 version. It running at a higher resolution with more effects and has a consistently higher framerate. How things have changed.

They look pretty much the same to me (save for Xbox being darker). For all the nonsense this spawned this isn't as crazy a disparity as I expected.

But both are a step up from current gen by a good amount from the looks of it. Both versions look better than I expected for 60 FPS launch titles.

X1 and PS4 difference not as much as I thought it would be, but the aliasing was more noticeable in the X version from the start.
