DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Wait, I don't get it, DF did this to make the Xbox One version looks better or worse?

you usually use high contrast to make things better : more black, more shadows, hidding unpleasant details... Some for photography really : higher contrast makes stuff more eye candy.

Not saying DF, maybe Dice turned contrast and gamma up on XO.

Either I need to get my eyes checked, there's something up with the video or a youtube video doesn't do it justice (or any combination of the three), but they look pretty much the same to me.

So the Xbox One's upscaler basically oversaturates everything to the point of not being able to notice imperfections? Good strategy I guess?
It's a damn good strategy. Who needs better architecture when you just turn the lights off. Fuck it.

I'm losing it.

Madden will default to night games on the x1. Problem solved.

Despite pushing ~50% more pixels, that ~40% difference in frame-rate as well;

CANT EVEN SEE THE FUCKING GUN HERE.

This thread is moving a mile a minute but this post is such bullshit I can't let it go.

You specifically picked out the second the frame rate was the biggest in difference, and not a few seconds beforehand where the PS4 was 38 against the xbox at 34 or the second after where it dips to 44 vs. the xbox one at 42. It has a clear frame and aliasing advantage, but jeez man.

As for the crushed blacks, the xbox shot is IN A SHADOW. He's covered by something. Within the next few seconds he walks out, you see it pass, and he's out in the light again. Shown in action here:

But of course you know that, you just scoped the footage. I don't even want to get into a tech discussion but horsehit like your post just muddies the water.

No, they will just say "why does this game look so hideous? Did I accidentally turn my TV settings up?" and not even realize just how much better they could have had it if they bought the PS4 version.

Really for a cross gen launch title I'm actually astonished by how much better the ps4 version is. I thought it would take a year (pretty much when everyone finally moved 100% to ps4/xb1 development) for most games to really start showing the power gap. It's happening a lot already.

Yeah. This is just a cross-gen title too. As developers are able to utilize more of the GPU, things will show. I'm sure developers will also get better at utilizing Xbox tools and esram configuration, but if this is the starting point, I don't see Xbox catching up.

It's a wash for me as well. I prefer the XBO in some parts and the PS4 in others. They both look good.

Definitely don't see this gulf that people were thought there was going to be.

Complete and total bow to Thuway. I had heard 1080p and said as much... and I was wrong. He said 900p and was right. /bow

And holy shit at some of those gifs. I mean... if you buy either system as you play you'll be happy. But that flip back and forth... is almost generational. Madness.

Give him a nice pat on the head!

My ass it is. Let's toss out the saturation issue as it still isn't clear whether that's DF's fuckery or the console's. They're pushing 40% less pixels per frame, dropping elements like ambient occlusion entirely, yet still getting mauled in framerate stability. This is hardware they are selling at a 25% higher price point and this is a launch title. It's a fucking problem.

Excellent way of putting it.

Bought it for the PC. Don't plan to buy it for consoles.

PS4 looks better in most of the shots to me ... though XO does look better in others.

The missing features is pretty noticeable though in the XO ... specially the AA. I didn't watch videos so I didn't see the frames.

The difference isn't that large ... but it is a multiplat game.

The oldest trick in the book, +100.

It fooled me for a sec.

Both look fine to me. The vast majority of people aren't going to pause the game to count pixels or whatnot

I hope this is not a hardware thing with the Xbox.

If it's going to rely on heavy sharpening and contrast to reduce its visual inferiority, that's worse than having a lower resolution.

In the end, if this is the level of difference we can expect I doubt the average buyer will care. But then again I've noticed how over time more and more people are mentioning graphical differences in these types of comparisons from sources that aren't really hardcore like GAF (see IGN comments, Youtube comments), so maybe it's becoming more important to the mainstream. But then (yet) again I doubt the typical IGN/Youtube commenter is going to be examining textures on a guy's head like we do. I just don't know what to think. It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out.

could the reason for the lower res and effects on x1 version be due to immature dev. tools and not actual hardware limitations ?

Meh, This is a cross gen game using an engine that is likely hardly designed to run on either one of these new consoles (both of them) that use 8 threaded CPU's. The PS4 gets to 900P simply because it can use its GPU to brute force it.

The Takeaway >

I think we are getting a nice little preview of the Xbox One upscaler, which no matter what version you prefer, is doing a pretty bang on job here.

On the PS4 side of things, I would guess it's faster memory is allowing it maintain better framerates even when pushing out 50% more pixels than Xbox One. Not bad.

The good news?? It seems that neither console drops below 30 frames at any time.

Remember, this engine has not been truly optimized for next gen.. Think about those Xbox 360 and PS3 launch titles; we are not where near what these machines can do!

Despite being unimpressed with both version on show here (didn't expect that much aliasing on both consoles) the image enhancing stuff (if that is what is going on on the xb1) is actually worrying, i hope that was a descision made by DICE and is not a standard feature of the hardware. That's another 360 gamma curve failure if true! When you can see white outlines in contrast rich parts of a picture then you went overboard with sharpening, as i didn't read the whole thread that my or may not be debunked already.

So this is MS's secret sauce? Seems to be working! Not surprised if they deliberately asked DF to this this entire generation just to make it seem that the games on MS's consoles are indeed "sharper"

ITT we have PS4 buyers liking the look of the X0 footage and X0 fans preferring the PS4 video but we still have people flinging insults of fanboyism and koolaid drinking. Can't someone just be a gamer?
There's some things I like of what both are doing in that video but I'm going to take their word for it that the PS4 version looks much better. I'm not liking the washed out look though.

Does no one read the article. It's nit DF' fault, it's Sony's. The softness on the PS4 image is a byproduct of Sony's scaled getting the image to 1080P.

I guess the the softness on the pc image is a byproduct of the 1080p native rendering solution?

Has the master race been officially taken over by xbox one?

Yeah, upon further inspection PS4 version is much stronger. DF crushing the blacks to make it seem otherwise is pretty shitty. They should be better than this.

So many on GAF falling for the sharpness and contrast cranked up means that average consumers won't tell or care and they'd fall for this trick at BestBuy.

JackFrag's One footage looks much better than the DF footage, color wise.

Something is not right with the DF footage, it looks heavily doctored and unnatural, not saying they did it intentionally, but something caused it to look way oversharpened and the colours all ugly like.

Yeah, you are right. Jack's footage actually makes the Xbox One version look better without the crushed blacks versus the DF footage of the Xbox One version.

Are there people who actually thing the Xbone version looks better?

Do they have some sort of filter on their eyes that smooths out jaggies?

And why is everything so dim?

it is like someone turned the lighting down on the Xbone version for some reason.

Probably to hide something.

I posted a comparison earlier, and during an identical scene, he's darker and almost completely blacked out for huge portions of the scene. Look for yourself:

About what i expected from the hardware. Dat 900p uhhh. At least it looks better than when Dice should drop the HBAO for SSAO. Could probably hit 1080 then.

People saying that the Xbone version looks better because of the textures reminds me of some of the old people I do photo touch-ups for.

If they provide me a low resolution image and that's all they have, I'll upscale it and then add a little bit of grain to give it more "detail."

Unfortunately for GAMES, doing that will cause major aliasing problems. I feel like the people saying the Bone version is better didn't actually watch the videos on a monitor.... The aliasing is REALLY bad.

What to take away from this is that MS knew where to hit with normal people.
Normal people don't care about jaggies as long as it pretends to look sharp.
Know this well from video encoding.

Framerate though, oh boy!
