DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

So the bottom line here is that the PS4 is rendering 50% more pixels and still outputs a higher frame-rate and effects that are absent from the X1 version?
The PS4's softer image is the consequence of a poor choice of AA solution but in terms of raw numbers that's it right?

Yep

How people think that the lighting on the Xbox One version is better is beyond me:

ib0gOrDzD8ScKG.gif

Just my first impression on a few of the gifs. That one pronounces their differences more and I could see that PS4 has a better lighting. I dunno. I'm not good at this stuff.

I think Xbox One's contrast makes it easier to hide stuff. Jaggies for the most part.

it does seem a shame for a new gen to launch with two machines where neither are at the level of a decent pc gaming rig from day 1 though.

one is well behind the other less so but a good rig can push 1080 comfortable.

I think the days of new consoles pushing things forward are gone.

having said that, the games will still look great and there will be plenty of good exclusives.

PS4 version looks more flat, the colours pop more in the Xbone version.
Whether the PS4 version is 'correct' or not doesn't really matter, just going off what I prefer to look at.

The good news is every TV has image adustments, make your eyes bleed away. Either that or just set your TV to showroom mode.

You'll find that awesome.

If you want to do this, go to your TV and turn up the saturation and sharpness. Done, the PS4 version will have the same colours and awful blacks as the Xbox One version.

In these videos and images I'd take the xbox one version with an upscale to 1080p. Looks like both versions look fantastic which is good for everyone. About what I expected and the overreaction was hilarious as to the hoped differences.

reposting earlier responses as rebuttal to those who think x1 version looks better.
really?

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, in this near-finalised state, the PS4 offers a superior experience on several fronts. The resolution is higher at 1600x900, as compared to the tried and tested 1280x720 on Xbox One, suffering as it does for more visible aliasing artefacts. Visually, the PS4 has a marked advantage with ambient occlusion effects too, which simply isn't matched on Microsoft's platform with the build we played.
From videogamer.com:
And with the console war heating up as we edge closer to the next-gen launch, DICE’s shooter may end up being a key factor in the war between Microsoft and Sony, with the PlayStation 4 version displaying a clear advantage over the Xbox One.
The differences between the two versions will come as great concern to Microsoft. Just as it appears to be regaining traction from its fumbling Xbox One campaign, the revelation that at least one of next-gen’s major launch titles is noticeably weaker on its console will be enough to threaten to send the platform holder back to square one. It’s difficult to tell how big a problem it may end up being until we’ve compared the complete multiplatform launch line-up it, but if the trend continues with further releases (as last week’s Call of Duty: Ghosts rumour suggests it may well do) even players heavily invested in the Xbox platform could be prompted to starting look elsewhere.
It may just be teething problems, of course, and as developers grow accustomed to working with Xbox One, issues related to native resolution may soon become a thing of the past. But that goes both ways. With the PS4 off to a stronger start, the divide between the two consoles may remain a constant as developers look to push that GDDR5 RAM and impressive GPU in ways they simply can’t on Microsoft’s console.

Yeah, I don't think anything more really needs to be said. There's a subjective point of view, and then there's technical/objective view. To me the PS4 version looks better, and that just so happens to be backed up on the technical side by....everyone. The people who played this themselves already are also saying the PS4 looks and performs better.

what more do you need? If you think X1 version looks good enough for you, that's okay.

except for the like 50% more pixels and higher framerate lol...this really cant be stated enough....

PS4
- more stable framerate
- 50%+ more pixels rendered
- better effects
- certain effects that are simply absent from the Xbone version
- better aliasing BY FAR

its doing all of those things while pushing significantly more pixels...thats A LOT of difference...
Not even close to the same.

  • PS4 renders 56% more total pixels.
  • Xbone renders at 720p (aka, same as the 360/PS3 versions)
  • PS4 has anti-aliasing
  • Xbone is missing motion blur in MP
  • PS4 has HBAO (ambient occlusion)
  • Even after all those advantages, PS4 runs at a higher/more stable framerate

There may be more, but that covers it for the most part, I believe.

You do realize that you can achieve the same look in both versions, right?

The problem with the settings you see on XB1 is that, while you may like it in some scenes, it will absolutely ruin others (by eliminating all shadow detail or altering the colors incorrectly). It won't look like this on your actual XB1 by default.

That is, you buy XB1 and this game and what you see on your TV will not be what you're seeing in these shots. It will look more like the PS4/PC version.

That's why all X1 games are going to be 'better with Kinect'
Even then you'd need a "tiny" 30-40 inch TV at the very least :p
I'm more interested as to why the left and right hand side of the XO images are cropped, yet they take up the same width. Makes me wonder if something is being covered up...
Nice catch. I thought it was just the HUD differences, but they just seem to show that the cropping was even greater than it seems (PS4, XbO).

Go and read what I said and look at the sky textures and clothing texture and you'll see that I'm right. Lol.

I think someone said that some textures were randomly generated, that's why they appear different even though it's the same scene.

I love these threads!

I feel happy with my decision to go with PS4 as main platform, as I think there is a clear difference, even at launch, but if I had gone with Xbox One, I don't think you're going to be unhappy with it unless you're comparing it side by side!

In what universe does this:

look better than this:

Please enlighten me, because I'm not seeing it. Aliasing is very different in both versions.

Other than the aliasing the difference is pretty marginal. It's only noticeable if you really look for it. And to be honest hardly anyone is going to notice the differences in the middle of a battle.

you mean the randomly generated camo on the uniforms? or the artificially "sharper" Xbone textures due to the wonky gamma in the DF vids?

the sky as in the dark clouds? yes, though i think the PS4's clouds look better inverted like that

Er...the XB1 picture looks better than the PS4 version.

How people think that the lighting on the Xbox One version is better is beyond me:

Everything is better in the PS4 version except for a thing that ruins it all, that fucking screen filter that blurs every texture. Look at the sleeve in those pics. In the XB1 you can see the clothing pores and in the PS4 you blink your eyes as it seems you suddenly are shortsighted.

Ps4 looks slightly better IMO but certainly not worth the "omg boom! 1" type responses. XB1 buyers have nothing to worry about. At least not with this particular game.

If I was buying XB1 I'd be less worried about this game and more worried about future, next-gen multiplats, that say - run at 900p/30 or even 720p/30 on PS4.

The problematic thing for Microsoft here is that the game is showing a very real performance gap, and how that might manifest differently as games become more and more demanding.

"Sharp" is for some synonymous with good. If you look closely the PS4 version actually has more details (just look at the front of the weapon) because of the higher res.

You are joking right? the Xbox picture the weapon is angled do you can't really see the front of the gun......That detail right?

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Or that the ps4 shows clouds

The other versions have the same clouds, but for some reason the clouds are dark gray on the PS4 and white on XBO/PC. It's almost impossible to see them, but they are there.

Based on the footage the PS4 version clearly looks better, though some of the screen caps seem otherwise. Obviously going to trust the footage in this case but the XB1 version doesn't look bad by any means. The biggest differences will likely be most apparent on larger 1080p sets (and the framerate).

Is there an explanation why the PS4 version looks so soft even though it's higher resolution? This is ridiculous.

Post process AA according to DF - apparently they used a heavy version of it here.

Honestly, I don't mind FXAA at all when playing at 1080 but this looks nearly as bad as the Quincunx AA that plagued early PS3 games.
