Nobody else made the thread (not even Tizoc, who makes an anniversary thread for everything), so it's up to me.

I think I'll share Player One Podcasts' Generation-16, a lovely ongoing video series chronicling each of the releases for the Sega Mega Drive chronologically.

I got my Mega Drive when I was about ten. Played Altered Beast (bundled!) and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker till I threw up on new years eve.

good times!

Oh god, I'm so old.

My Hong Kong Megadrive is the only console prior to current gen that I still have hooked up. It'll remain hooked up until the day I kick the bucket.

I totally forgot that I had the Mega Drive collection on PS3.

Might play a bit of Streets of Rage 2 later.
That's a good idea on any given day. It should be mandatory on an anniversary.

That means it's Ranger X time, with a helping dose of Pulseman. And Gaiares! And Battle Mania Daiginjou!!

Truthfact: in Europe and Japan, the first book of the Bible is called Mega Drive.

Great console, so many great memories. Revenge of Shinobi, Castle/World of Illusion, Phantasy Star II, Shining Force I and II, El Viento, Arcus Odyssey, Exile, Warsong, Kid Chameleon, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Rings of Power, Starflight, NHL and all these awesome EA games with the yellow chip.

Jesus, I forgot Streets of fucking Rage. That Koshiro sound.

As a UK citizen, the name "Genesis" has never stuck with me.

When I think Genesis, I think Mad Man Moon, Land of Confusion and phil collins' face.

My list mainly had game series sad to say, didn't bother to check when the MD/Genesis originally released, then again I always assumed it released in 1990/91 ^^;
...but FINALLY SOMEONE NOTICED IT!

Mind elaborating about the dude with the glasses and the funky hairdo though?

Anyways the Genesis was THE console of my childhood before the PSX.
I played Sonic 2, World of Illusion and TMNT on it and me and brother had a blast playing them, some great memories...

Happy B-Day Genesis/MD, and here's to 250 more!

Quarter of a century. God damn! Gives me those "looooooooooong ago" vibes that I used to get when some one brought up Atari to me when I was kid.

I wish I could say that I got the most out of the system when I was a kid, but all I had was a handful of games. First of all I had a model 2 and I was pretty convinced that the giant model 1 was a different system entirely. LOL! I had Growl which was surprisingly pretty fun for me. I had the Batman and Robin game which me and my neighbor used to try to beat to no avail... pretty sure that was a shitty game iirc. Sonic Spin Ball was not bad and kept me busy with something to play.

The lion King made my x-mas! My aunt got it for me. She liked the movie and I was completely obsessed by it. So when the game was actually good, I was as happy as a pig in the mud.

I was also anticipating Jurrassic park, but it ended in disappointment since I would always get stuck at the T-Rex part.

I was also lucky enough to have the best the system had IMO in Sonic 2, 3, and Knuckles. Those were the games I could waste entire days on -- particularly S3&K. I spent
sooooo much time on them! Locking S3 onto S&K blew my mind back then. Plus, music like this was forever ingrained into my mind.

I had another neighbor with an SNES. All he had were a bunch of Mario games... yeah Sonic suited me just fine [Oblivious to something called Super Metroid, but that's how it was].

Happy 25th SEGA Genesis! Ain't no console as rad as you and you brought some of that radness into my grade school life.

Oh, I always thought your avatar was wearing a beanie. Turned out to be his bowl cut.
Haha! Me, too!

Never had a Mega Drive, just the good ol' American Genesis. Bought with my own money and bundled with that devil-worshiping (lol) Altered Beast! It was just the step up from 8-bit that I was craving.

I soaked up Thunder Force II, World Championship Soccer, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, and Revenge of Shinobi like nobody's business. Amazing times. Such amazing times.

My 2nd console I ever owned, after the NES.

I have a lot of awesome memories looking back some of the games I've played.

Starting off, let's begin with this nicely written and extremely informative article
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sega/genesis/sega-genesis-megadrive-101-a-beginners-guide

25 Years since it's release deserves a mention of my 25 favorite Genesis games of all time. I highly recommend people trying the games on this list. All of these games stand the test of time as enjoyable games to this day.

Games are listed in not order of how much I like them, but just selected from memory at the time of writing.

01) Beyond Oasis
Developed by Yuzo Koshiro's studio Ancient. Beyond Oasis is one of two games that is direct answer to Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H40274WHGhI

02) Castlevania : Bloodlines
The only Castlevania game to ever been released on a Sega platform, except being the Saturn port of Symphony of the Night (which didn't get a English localized release)
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/genesis/cvbl.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uf5lN435hw

03) Rocket Knight Adventures
An awesome and colorful action platformer by Konami developed by Contra staff.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/sparkster/sparkster.htm

04) Steel Empire

05) Crusader of Centy / Soliel
The other Action Adventure title on the Genesis that was used the formula established by Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series.

06) Alien Soldier
Very nice run'n'gun action game in the same style of Contra, developed by Treasure.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/aliensoldier/aliensoldier.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJNEfPimU40

07) Dynamite Headdy
Highly detailed and colorful 2D platformer, developed by Treasure.

08) Sorcerer's Kingdom
One of the earliest Genesis games I've ever played and my first RPG I've beaten.
http://segaretro.org/Sorcerer's_Kingdom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNgK4A7iMM8 (Sorry for the lack of Longplay video

09) Streets of Rage 2
One of Sega's best sidescrolling Beat'Em Series. This is one is my favorite entry in the entire series.

11) Shining Force 2
This is the game that got my interested in the SRPG genre, long before Disgaea and Final Tactics, was Shining Force, the 2nd game is the highlight of the series on this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7aAzbHSJt8

12) Phantasy Star IV: End of the Millenium
One of the most memorable Console RPGs I've played, with a story and characters I had emotional attachment too. With a spell combination system that predates Chrono Trigger
and a Tragic Heroine that predates Aeris
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/genesis/ps4.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar4FP-LvdjM

13) Landstalker: The Treasure of King Nole
Another action RPG on the Genesis but developed by Shining Force devs, Camelot and Climax. It was one of the earliest examples an adventure game that contained platforming segments, navigating dungeons filled with traps, and an annoying fairy that accompanied you everywhere (sound familiar?), but back in 1992 no less!
http://segaretro.org/Landstalker:_The_Treasures_of_King_Nole
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnueMfAmfM8&list=PLD46808FC409BBF47

14) Gunstar Heroes
Another Treasure developed gem for the Mega Drive. Run'N'Gun gameplay with selectable levels, fantastic music, and large boss fights!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9v3B1hzMwnQ

15) Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
In regards to the many Ninja games released during that era, such as Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Warriors, Hagane, and Ninja Spirit. Shinobi III ranks amongst the best of the platforming action titles in this category.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/shinobi/shinobi3.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNGbAStPXZc

16) Pulseman
Before Gamefreak was known for Pokemon. They made this nice 2D platforming gem on the Mega Drive.
http://segaretro.org/Pulseman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtoBY2S2zzo

17) QuackShot: Staring Donald Duck and World of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse
In a time period when Disney games weren't criticized for being "kiddy" and were respected as a form of video game art, These games stand as an example of this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3uCyHkPkdk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sax_6MiYq1Y

18) Contra : Hard Corps
Hard Corps combined all of the great, non-stop shooting gameplay that is expected of this great run'n'gun action series.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/contra/contra3.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6vDhKpjzpI

19) Ranger-X
A highly unappreciated, mostly ignored action title on the Genesis known for having some of the best visuals to push out it's hardware.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/rangerx/rangerx.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmkyHnh-lWM

20) Sub-Terrania
A very original and unique take on the gravity style of shmups (you know, like asteroids). One of the more obscure games to be had on the Mega Drive / Genesis.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/zyrinx/zyrinx.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoMIRvDTw-w

21) Golden Axe II
Much like Streets of Rage 2 improving over it's predecessor, Golden Axe II is also equally superior over the original in terms of enemy designs, boss fights, gameplay and animations.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/go...lden Axe Series/Page_8_Golden_Axe_II_Gen.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCZVbjEvHzI

22) Mercs
Run'n'Gun by Capcom, the second installment of the notable Commando series. However it has an overhead perspective and gameplay similar to the Ikari Warriors but with the inclusion of ridable vehicles (think Konami's Jackal)
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/commando/commando.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2bR0dP_zb4

23) Sonic the Hedgehog 3 + Knuckles
A technical marvel (at the time). Being able to join two cartridge games and merge them into a single massive game (Dubbed Lock-On Technology). This is arguable the best 2D Sonic platformer of all time.
http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_3_&_Knuckles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j350HVcB2dA

24) El Viento
Created by Wolf Team and published in the US by Renovation. With haphazard action and iffy level design, but the fast pace and overall craziness make this one of Wolf Team's better titles. It was also one of the earliest games containing a soundtrack from Motoi Sakuraba, in fact Wolf Team itself became the foundations that birthed tri-Ace once after they disbanded from Namco / Telenet Japan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHSZKXeJvws

25) Alisa Dragoon
A an overlooked platforming action title that was developed by Game Arts and had animation designs from Gainax.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/alisia/alisia.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIIRtWPYBtg

If you own any of these games on the Virtual Console or decide to use emulation to enjoy them. Check them out. Or even better yet, track down an old Mega Drive or Genesis console and some of these carts and enjoyed them the way I did for the first time.

My Mega Drive is under a pile of stuff covered in dust with S+K still in it. One day I will get it out, dust it off and try and hook it back up.

Happy birthday to the SEGA GENESIS. I started with NES, but Genesis was THE system that got me into gaming.

Need to have a marathon this year, but so many good games to choose from.

Thanks for the reminder GAF.

Still love the Mega Drive, currently sitting in the attic but not for long. So many great games for the MD. Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) stands out along with Spiderman: Enter the Kingpin. Probably my most frequently played game over the last 20 years. Every time I get a new phone or system, this is the game I try and emulate first.

Sixfortyfive

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
Maybe I'll stream some Genesis later tonight.

Pick one for me, GAF:
- Bonanza Bros
- Gunstar Heroes
- Sonic 1

I don't have a genesis at the moment although I plan on hunting for a wondermega when I head to Japan next year but are there any good Japanese exclusive Wii VC releases? The only consoles I have with me are my Wii U, a Japanese Wii, and my 3DS so pickings are fairly slim for me.

Pal MD and pal Dreamcast are the two nicest looking consoles ever, I say pal DC because the blue swirl works better IMO.

I plan to buy a new megadrive this winter, my old model 1 was broken a long time ago and it's replacement, a model 2, has lost all it's wires and i'm not a fan of that model either.

Mega Drive was the first console I ever owned!

I was 7 (8?) and went to Vigo, Spain with my parents (I'm from Oporto, Portugal) and while my mum, my sister and I went through this big department store my dad said he was going to the car and bought Mega Drive and hide it in the car's trunk.

1 ou 2 months later, xmas eve, me and my sis got a Mega Drive!!!! Bundled with Sonic, Italy 90, Super Hang On and Columns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I opened the box on Xmas morning (why didn't I open it on Xmas eve beats me), i got super sad cause i though they only bundled Sonic and Columns!!!!!! (did i cry? probably). After a while i realised they put the 3 games into one cartridge!!!! The 4 games were there!!! Happy times!!

And that's my first moment as a gamer! I miss it! :)
