Ultimate PS4 FAQ is live on PS Blog

MP3 license is $0.75 per device.

They can sell MP3 support for 2-3 bucks and make a lot of money.

They'd still have to develop a MP3 playback software though.

Still, not being able to play all my shit MP3s and other files just suuucks.

I guess some people like $400 streaming boxes. To each their own.

It's more about the all in one functionality. I like my media centre as uncluttered as possible. This creates a headache for me. Have to keep my PS3 kicking around now and I have limited HDMI slots at the back of my TV. Have to switch systems to watch my personal video's. It just seems asinine.

The ultimate kicker is if you can stream music from your PC via the webrowser.

Its a fucking piss take. I dont even use the streaming capabilites much but they are part and parcel Of having any device in 2013. At this point in my life i expect my toaster to play MP3s

And unlike some here i dont expect external harddrive support to be patched in. The hack of the PS3 really pissed off Sony.
The needless locking down of the Vita is a direct result of this.

Content manager is a awful way of transferring files and its purpose is to make sure Sony has total control of everything that goes in and out the system.

I hope that happens. We'll have to wait for Sony to realize that forcing MP3s out won't result in Music Unlimited subscriptions.

No CD, No media streaming, no MP3...this ain't an incapable of problem, it's blocking.
some one contact Shuhei, this needs to be sorted.

PS3 was pretty bare in terms of features at launch and it gradually grew to have a lot more. I have no doubt that the PS4 will be the same. I'm not sure background music is as big of a deal as people are saying on here. Just play your iPhone or whatever on a different device.

OK. MP3, MU and DLNA business are just bs. WTF are they thinking? Hope they have change of heart and include those features later.

I definitely agree with this sentiment. I hope that they patch in such support at a later date, if enough people complain. That said, I can count on one hand the number of times I've used those features on my PS3, so I personally am not likely to write customer support about this.

I honestly believe that more often than not (other than racing sims and super boring grinding segments of RPGs) playing music in the background of my vidjagames takes away from the experience. I understand that others really wanted these features, though, and respect that different people value things differently. What I still don't understand is how these features (or the lack thereof, in this instance) would make or break one's purchase.

I think they are seriously underestimating how many people used their PS3 to output video content to their TV's.

Or they have 100% accurate statistic of how many people used their PS3 to output video content to their TV's.

100% of people used their console for gaming, so that needs to be addressed first.

Will PS4 support media servers or DLNA support in order to stream videos or movies from a home PC?

The PS4 system does not support client functionality for media servers.

Pre-order cancelled, and I'm not even joking.

Lots of (small) bad news in there, but at least I appreciate and respect them including them in their FAQ instead of hiding them and waiting for gamers to find out later.

According to Wikipedia, DLNA was added to PS3 after 12 firmware updates, 6 months after US launch in may 2007.

No external HDD? but you can update from a memory device? yet again capable but blocked WHY?

Not trying to sound like the usual "preorder canceled" post but I've honestly been looking for reasons on dropping both preorders until at least the spring to save a $grand and this may have done it on that side. Am I really skipping these and getting a Wii U? I'm sorry I haven't been around, Mario, but I do still love you.

In other words, give it fucking time. I want the console to play games. Keep your PS3 and use it as a media server. Or someone like me where I have a computer that I can use where I don't need to do such a thing.

LATIN, MATRIPEDICABUS, DO YOU SPEAK IT
By including the codec in the game itself?
Not rocket science.

And how will you get access to said custom MP3s if the system won't support USB connected storage or support DLNA servers? The OS would have to let you get to those files somehow - if they don't support DLNA but can get you access to media some other way on the network, then that wouldn't be so bad.

Couldn't you connect an external drive and play media files that way at launch though? It's not clear, but it doesn't seem like you could even do that with the information we currently have.

I saw this question posed a few pages ago, and it was left unanswered. Does the FAQ imply that Facebook will be the only way to share game footage AT LAUNCH, or is that a permanent thing as of now that will not be expanded with a future update?

Also, my personal question from a bit back: Is there no NFS:Rivals or F2P games at launch?

Thanks.

Wait, I just checked the EU blog... I had read the wrong price.

Games are set at £59.99 RRP!

SIXTY BLOODY QUID!! For a disc!

Hell no, I thought they said it would be in line with current gen?

Jeez, apart from the early adopters the UK sales will likely tank at those prices. Xbox One will start looking cheap after a few games if they have prices at current gen. What a waste of money. Hopefully sales are affected so they amend this rubbish, although some will eat that shit sandwich and call it the best they have ever eaten.

Madness.

It will do that somehow for updates so presumably external HDD storage is just badly worded (as in: can we use HDD to expand PS4 storage like a WiiU does).
Since you'll be able to update from USB in regular mode after 1.5 I'm sure FAT32 support is in at least

First off, how do you know it would only take 3 days? Are you a programmer who has extensive familiarity with the PS4 OS code?

Second, even if it did take 3 days, that's 3 days they could otherwise be spending on a more important feature. A lot of the missing features people are complaining about are probably less about deliberate omission and more about triage. Custom themes are a nice-to-have on a games console but not as important as party chat and other online play features. MP3 playback is similarly nice but not as important as music unlimited support, as that's a subscription service that makes Sony money.

If they're still not in 1-2 years from now I'd be bitching too. For day 1, though, I'd prefer that they prioritize stability and core gaming-related functions.

Major, is that you?

Mp3 stuff for custom soundtracks is bullshit. The rest is disappointing, but not something I've ever used, since I have a mac mini solely for HTPC duties running Plex.

Custom themes missing is something I understand. I'm not sure how they'd work with the new UI.

Trying to push Music Unlimited like this, may be the first true fuck up of Sony for next gen.

As much as it sucks waiting, I got my redesigned PS3 in 2010 and I was happy knowing it was a much better product than when it was released. I wouldn't wait that long this time around, but maybe a year or so.

Hopefully they'll patch in DLNA and MP3 support later down the line if they see demand for it.

Considering they heard the demand for no DRM bullshit and better indie support, I can see them add this down the line. Same with support for current BT devices.

DLNA back then was a nascent standard. It's 2013. This shit is standard on even the shittest smart TV. The shittest smart TV.

This is some grade A bullshit they are pulling.

Including most of sony's TVs and bluray players. That should suggest they won't ignore it,they just had different priorities for launch

I really think people are blowing the MP3 support out of proportion.

What really grinds my gears with PS4:

1.) Lack of External Hardrive support! I can understand not having external playback! I want to be able to backup my digital games easily without having to redownload them when my Hardrive gets full. >.> Hopefully you can still do that.

2.) Lack of MP3 support. Sony should really include this...Some indie developer could easily develop one though. I never played MP3's off of my PS3, so this doesn't make or break the PS4 for me.... It should still be supported. Sony's Unlimited sucks...give me Pandora or something better.

It's launch guys. Let's get through that first and then let Sony start fixing messes.

And why are people bringing up no streaming, you can stream just fine. Developers have the option of cutting off certain points in single player(I'm guessing) that they don't want people to leak early. I'm sure mp won't be effected.

It's a launch console (for now) and guess what they want to make sure works? The games, how they run, the online and all the little things that go with the games and online. It's first and foremost a game console and they are treating it as such... even if a few things still suck that aren't there off the bat.

I sincerely hope you're right, But a lot of the points in the FAQ were followed by "at launch" or "in a future update" The bullet points for MP3 and DLNA were missing such hopeful remarks..

Here's my question I posted as a comment on the blog. Still awaiting a response, maybe somebody here can speak to this?

Hey guys, excellent FAQ. I have one quick question.
I, unfortunately, made my PSN account when I was a wee tot. Because of this it’s a sub account. I understand we cannot upgrade to a master account, sure. But, when I get my PS4 will my sub account be eligible to be the Primary Account on my console?
I ask because in addition to a large amount of trophies, I have purchased a ton of Vita digital content. Only one account can be used on Vita and I would very much like my Vita account and my primary PS4 account to be the same. Making a new PSN account would mean saying goodbye to a lot of hardwork and money,
Please tell me on day 1 with my new PS4 this account won’t give me any problems.

The ps3 fucking sucked as a media server, I can't get it to play shit anymore. People are just pissed they can't stream their pirated movies, it can still play Blu-rays people, buy your movies and TV shows.

I buy physical media and rip it to hard drives. Amazing damage control.
