Nexus 5 |OT|

For all the hype about clear status bars I'm kind of disappointed that it turns out only the home screen supports it.

Yeah the caveats with that particular network should be noted. I was able to pop in an existing ATT sim card into my N5 with little trouble (I'll need to change my plan to access LTE) but new accounts will not be able to activate without a device ATT recognizes.

Only the Google search app uses it because it requires new code to be used. For it to be in other apps they would have needed to know about before hand.

Give it some time.

Because every WalMart does not have a goddam T-Mobilt StraightTalk micro sim I'm ordering one and a web-code $45/mo card.

I currently have a prepaid phone on Virgin Mobile with NO SIM CARD. If I get the ST sim and the monthly card, can I just transfer my own phone number at home to my Nexus 5? Or do I need to go to a WalMart?
I suck at mobile.

Anyone doubting this is upgrade to the 4 are fools. Lighter, thinner, faster, sharper & brighter screen, LTE, camera is tonnes better (no more blurry holiday snaps), better battery at this stage and option for more storage.

Ticks all my boxes.

Now Gooey, start stocking those official bumpers.

What's everyone's choice for screen protector?

Screen won't win awards for viewing angles or saturation, but it's still one of the sharpest, most accurate IPS displays I've ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes on of any smartphone.

Just got mine today.

First impressions.

1) Damn this thing is quick
2) Screen is really washed out. I was wowed when I first saw a gs4 screen. Honestly I prefer my g-nex screen to this.

What. Sounds like you just like AMOLED displays and think accurate LCD displays are washed out because the colors aren't blown out.

I think I saw a screen that Google Maps has it. Can you check?

Anyways devs have to opt-into it so widespread support might not be around for a bit, but the best apps should do it soon.

Basically true.

Its just hard to go from a nice deep contrast screen with black blacks to "true" or "accurate" colors and grey blacks.

I'm sure I'll get used to it, but damn me if I won't feel envy when looking at a friends gs4 screen.

How's the battery with 3G/4G?

Today was my first full day with the phone. Took it off the charger at 8am, and it's 1 am where I am now. I used only LTE, but I accidentally left WiFi on for the first part of the day at work (it didn't connect to any access points, though). So, that drained the battery a bit. Took lots of pictures, and uploaded a bunch too.

I'd probably get to about 3hr and 45min of screen time before it died out.

Needless to say, this is about an hour+ more than my Nexus 4 would've gotten. If I had used WiFi, it would probably be closer to 5 hours.

Meh, looks unclear.

You'll get used to it. The colors on AMOLEDs are oversaturated while IPS displays are more like what they would be in real life.

Doesn't the camera use a lot of the battery as well?

You are literally the only person on earth who cares about this or even thinks it matters, lol.

I'm the only person here with taste.

From Engadget review:

"We would've liked to see all-white bezels match the rest of the device; the company's done it a few times before, but we've been told by people close to the situation that the Nexus was created with Google's design philosophy in mind while being based on LG's hardware platform."

Doesn't make sense to me as Google hasn't ever done that before. But yes, Google knows the deal.

Forgot to mention that I'm interested in seeing how the camera will perform. As a previous Gnex owner, is it safe to say this will be a large improvement? I'm aware it's 8mp instead of the Gnex's 5mp, but does that make a noticeable difference?

Anandtech put on a live mobile show last night in which they spend the last 30 minutes or so discussing the Nexus 5. It's worth a watch or skim if you'd like some of Brian's initial thoughts on the device.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyErUH5YrTU&feature=share

His initial thoughts on the camera seem to indicate what many have already surmised - that the hardware is quite good but the software is less than ideal. Looking forward to the full review.

I went from a gnex to nexus 5. The camera is a lot better overall, especially in low light. A lot less noise.

Is it true that they got rid of the upload/download indicator arrows in the cell and wifi reception icons? I liked that feature...

I liked the indicators changing color when an internet connection was established, that feature seems to be gone as well...

The hangouts app seems to change all numbers to the international version, Like the number will be set as 04******** and it changes to +61 4********.
It's really really annoying... How do i stop it?
(Australian btw)

Isn't that a good thing? It will come in handy when you're overseas and have to call/text home, won't have to add +61 to the numbers. I personally always save numbers with +614 instead of 04.

Got my 32gb black on Monday.

Loving it so far, such an upgrade from my nexus 4.

The scrolling left to get to Google now is a bit annoying, I liked having a extra screen on the left.

But apart from that its awesome :D

Got mine coming in in 2 weeks. I chose this over a Sony Xperia Z1 but I have to admit, I'm a bit scared of the quality of the camera and the battery life from what I've read.

Hey everyone, do you know if it's possible to order it on the US store from the EU?
My girlfriend is going back home for Christmas and I am hoping to have it delivered
at her house and she'll bring it to me when she comes back for New Year's. It would
save me around 100 euros for the 32GB ver. Tried simple web proxies and it did not work.

Will wait for based Anantech review before deciding for definite, but I think I'll be skippng the N5 and waiting for the N6 - I'm just still really happy with my N4.

My carrier doesn't support LTE and I'm not a big camera phone user, so there doesn't seem to be enough other reasons to upgrade.

I'd be on it in a second if I didn't have a Nexus 4 though - sexy phone.

I plan to root my N5 to install Cerberus as a system app, do i need to unroot it after that to receive OTAs? Some phones won't be able to update if rooted afaik
