Game Informer: PS4's boot time makes us eager for 'suspend & resume'

PS3 was 20 seconds of booting and 20 minutes of downloading and installing updates. The PS4 will feel lightyears faster.

I thought suspend/resume won't even be available at launch... and how can anyone downplay a 30 second bootup like it's nothing? Does anyone even remember PS2? Technology should be getting faster but it's getting slower.

And add to the 30 seconds the countless logos and notifications you see on games today + caching and the total waiting time is much longer

Clicked on the thread expecting something ridiculous. 30 seconds.

I always put my pc in Hibernate mode. If suspend works like it sound it shouldn't be expected to cold boot each break. Maybe cold boot once per day. I don't know how much energy is used in suspend thouhg.

it uses just enough energy to keep the network connection, hdd, and the integrated ARM chip going. it will scan for any updates you might need, or content you purchased, and download automatically. people have been putting their Wii and WiiU's to 'sleep' since forever since those don't have a real 'off' mode unless you unplug the power.

seriously, is everyone in this thread ignoring this? PS4 can go to sleep and wake up like your ancient Wii does. GI didn't get the memo and went ahead and posted this dumb article.

Sleep mode is still available at launch, right?

yes, but nobody is listening.

So many misinformed.

Sleep /=/ Suspend/Resume

Sleep = Power State
Suspend/Resume = Game save state stored in RAM.

Sleep is available at launch.
Suspend/Resume isn't.

from the PS4 Ultimate FAQ:

Does PS4 feature a “stand-by” mode?

Yes, PS4’s stand-by mode deactivates its primary functions to reduce energy usage, though it is still able to charge DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers and download system updates in this power-saving mode. As an added benefit for PlayStation Plus members, PS4 can automatically download game patches when in standby mode as well.

You have to remember the OS will get quicker as updates happen. The WiiU is probably the best example here. Their latest updated shaved a few seconds off and apparently they're not done with optimizations.

They may eventually change the boot process...that's the great thing about firmware updates. The software is always improving.

PS4 has a sleep mode. You don't need to do a cold boot every single time.

But seriously, are you sure PS3 is 20 seconds? Seems a lot faster than that. 30 seems a bit of a pain, but I'm sure I won't notice it if I sit farther from my TV....
I kind of don't get people dismissing this. Hell, we jump all over MS for little stuff (myself included), and it still comes down to something that is slower than the last gen Sony console. The time difference is basically the same percentage difference between 720 &1080.

It should have been faster, not slower.

It is very unlikely that I will ever have my console completely off when I'm not using it, unless transporting it somewhere else. 30 seconds is no biggie.

30 damn seconds!? That is so not next gen.
My boot SSDs got me spoiled. I can't go back to the ghetto first world problem days.

That's what I heard. However, I'm still trying to contact YOSP to find out.

What iphone do you have? My 5s takes less than 30.

But still 30 seconds isn't anything.
iPhones and Androids takes longer than 30 seconds to boot, the fastest booting portable devices i have ever owned is the PSP and PS Vita which boots in like 5 to 10 seconds.

Now I'm not sure whether you're playing along with my joke or not....

Either way, play the games, not the boot times!

A bit disappointing but hopefully they bring it down. The 360 takes forever to get to the dash... Anyone know how this compares?

I don't get why these machines take longer to cold boot than my windows machines.

Suspend/Resume = Putting the system to sleep while you are playing a game and then having the game resume when you come back without needing to reload the game.

SLEEP IS IN FOR THE LAUNCH and PS4 wakes instantly from it.

Threat title should be changed. Cold boot is equivalent to shutting off your iphone which everyone just avoids doing as much as possible. People in this thread need to CHILL.

Instant is nice, but 30 seconds is no big deal. It's just 30 seconds.

EXACTLY.

game informer doesn't realize that the PS4 can go to sleep and wake up without having to be completely shut down like PS3 and then completely cold booted back up. it's going to be like the Vita where you tap the power button and then tap it again and you're right back at the lock screen. like when you tap the power button on your smartphone. it doesn't turn it OFF, it just puts it to sleep, from which it wakes very quickly.

they think that the missing suspend/resume is the standby mode, and it's not. it's the suspend A GAME and resume A GAME function. big difference.

Ah, well I didn't know that it could go into sleep mode at launch. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

What the hell am I supposed to do for 30 seconds? Make a post on GAF complaining about it? I can't do that every time I turn on my PS3! I'd probably get banned from GAF if I did that anyway. Thanks for getting me banned from GAF, Sony!

So, guess they needed to find something to criticize.

I mean damn, it usually takes me longer fumbling around and finding the remote to switch inputs. Guess it time for a new $3k 4K TV so I'm not part of the manual input plebs.

Maybe we are dismissing it because sleep mode is still a thing and suspend resume is coming soon? When is the xbox's 1080p patch coming for cod of bf4?

After reading through the thread, nobody thinks that a SSD might change this? Sounds like the PS4 just has the symptom of the PC blues.

Dat architecture.
jk

It would be different if this was 30 second loads between game scenes or something of the like, but a single 30 second boot before you use your console? Jesus, what's wrong with people...

I'm used to long boots, the 360 takes forever, so I generally plan it out, turn it on and go for a bathroom break or something.

This guy knows whats up.

30 seconds isnt really long at all, heck its perfect time to do something menial like grab a snack, go to the toilet or some quick chores.

Im pretty sure its due to health warning and some splash logo crap.

Yes, it is in for launch. No, it is not that same thing as suspend/resume.

Yeah I appreciate you guys informing me. I got the two mixed up. So basically, you would boot up your PS4 and then mostly leave it in sleep mode (never turning it off)?
