Game Informer: PS4's boot time makes us eager for 'suspend & resume'

it uses just enough energy to keep the network connection, hdd, and the integrated ARM chip going. it will scan for any updates you might need, or content you purchased, and download automatically. people have been putting their Wii and WiiU's to 'sleep' since forever since those don't have a real 'off' mode unless you unplug the power.

seriously, is everyone in this thread ignoring this? PS4 can go to sleep and wake up like your ancient Wii does. GI didn't get the memo and went ahead and posted this dumb article.

yes, but nobody is listening.

There is no confirmation that what you're describing, this near-insant power up, is there at launch. Maybe "standby" is the powered-off mode, and that it doesn't have a TRULY powered off mode. I think 360's powered off state is "standby" since it can charge controllers while off, but it still has to boot up. I'm sure they tried powering it on more than once.

How do we put the console in that state?

from what i remember, they said you just tap the power button on the console. there's probably a way of doing it with the controller too. there's also a voice command that does it, but no command to turn it back on. you'll need to tap the power button again or use the controller to wake the PS4.

i remember at one point Sony saying that you can't really 'shut down' the PS4 unless you unplug it. (making it work the same way the Wii did, and i believe the way the WiiU works) so if you unplug it, and then plug it back in, you have to go through a cold boot process before you can get to the main OS. then you're free to sleep/wake it as you please.

If it's just from cold booting that'll be no problem, since sleep is confirmed for launch I probably will only see it cold boot once (and for any OS crashes).

Yeah I appreciate you guys informing me. I got the two mixed up. So basically, you would boot up your PS4 and then mostly leave it in sleep mode (never turning it off)?

Yes. This is the way it was designed to be used. It is this way because it can download updates in sleep mode, and it can be connected to the internet so that you can wake it from the playstation app to make it download whatever you just purchased from your phone.

Usain bolt would be able to cover 300m in those 30 seconds. 300m would be 10x the distance from one end of my house to the other. So what Sony is telling me is that I would be able to take a tour in a random MTV cribs house in the time it takes for the system to boot.

Pre Order cancelled. SSHD will probably solve it.

third time posting this:

Does PS4 feature a “stand-by” mode?
Yes, PS4’s stand-by mode deactivates its primary functions to reduce energy usage, though it is still able to charge DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers and download system updates in this power-saving mode. As an added benefit for PlayStation Plus members, PS4 can automatically download game patches when in standby mode as well.

After reading through the thread, nobody thinks that a SSD might change this? Sounds like the PS4 just has the symptom of the PC blues.

Dat architecture.
jk

I'd be very curious to see if an SSD can shave some seconds off the boot time. Platter based drives are so primitive. Next gen, SSDs will be standard in consoles.

If the console can sleep then I dont see the big deal. Personally, I would never be comfortable enough to leave my game in suspend mode anyway.

Now I'm not sure whether you're playing along with my joke or not....

Either way, play the games, not the boot times!
I just used your quote as it referenced 720 and tied into my rant.

Sorry, just having a bad Sony day. I was unimpressed with the PS4 UI as well.

Maybe we are dismissing it because sleep mode is still a thing and suspend resume is coming soon? When is the xbox's 1080p patch coming for cod of bf4?
Check my post history, you're barking up the wrong tree. I'm one of those entitled gamers that just wants improvements in things.

Is this power up or game start up??? Becuase if it's start up my original 60gb ps3 did not take that that long to start up or my super slim.

confusion? let me try. we're looking at three modes after all is said and done.

- a true on/off state where the power to the unit is cut and needs to be cold booted.

- standby mode. much like a PC's sleep state, the console can be instantly turned on.

- suspend/resume. this feature will allow the suspension of a gaming session, much like the vita, it will allow the user to go back at any time.

these people care about their time so much don't they, when 30 second boot time is a news worthy call for alarm, but then when they review an 8 hour game they complain that it doesn't have 4 extra hours of monotonous filler like its peers, so which is it, is your time valuable or isn't it?

God, what am I ever going to do with myself for 30 seconds at a time, once a week or less, with my PS4 hooked up to one of my two PC monitors?

Give me games or give me DEATH, Kaz. I'm fucking waiting.

Yeah okay. So pretty much like any modern tech device (smart phones, tablets). lol I feel dumb for how obvious this is. Guess I was just uninformed.

Doesn't the 360 do that stuff (charging controllers and downloading games)? It still has to boot up.

you know when you have your smart phone and you're about to put it in your pocket, and you tap the power button? it doesn't shut down your phone. it puts it to sleep. when you take it out and hit the power button again, it wakes up. that's what the PS4 is going to do, at launch, when you tap the power button. Sony and various other preview articles have talked about this since forever.

the only thing that isn't making it at launch or in 1.5 is the ability to pause your game, tap the power button (putting it to sleep while in a game), and being able to later in the day tap the power button and it resume your game exactly where you left off. THAT is the feature not making it at launch or 1.5. this has been covered many times. Game Informer just got their wires crossed and thought that it meant NO sleep mode on PS4 will be there at launch at all. this is untrue.

read the FAQ people.

Will PS4 allow me to suspend and resume my progress across different games?
This feature will not be available at launch.

Call that Next gen?

Not at launch.
Luther.gifs? Respeck!

Bitter about what? I just think it's unfair how this board has been lately.

If you can't tell the difference between a 30-second boot-up time for a console that will have suspend-and-resume in an early patch and all of the XB1's problems bouncing around then I don't know what to tell you.

Funniest part about this pre-launch environment is all the false equivalences. It's like someone finds out the PS4's wrapping is transparent instead of opaque and you get a certain sect of posters going "OH WOW THIS'LL GET BURIED BY SONYGAF IN NO TIME, TOTES THE SAME THING AS THE RESOLUTION CONTROVERSY".

I never accused you of being an xbox fanboy and the fact that you like improvement so much should be a good thing in this situation. I was saying the comparison is moot because one feature is coming the other is not. This is a cold boot. If you put the console into sleep mode I am certain it will be faster than 30 secs.

30 seconds for console loading and 10 seconds for the game to be directly played (KZ:SF)???

Oh god... preorder canceled and Banderas tattoo laser-removed!!

30 seconds?? This is ludicrous. I mean for 400 bucks I am paying for a slower machine than my will be ancient PS3?? That's like buying a new windows 9 PC that boots slower than Vista. As a technology fan, this literally makes me sick. Hopefully consumers sue or something, because this is so wrong. I'm an expert on this so if Sony doesn't fix this they can kiss their business goodbye.

That is a truly horrific argument to make. (150% more hyperbole as it's next gen time)
  • Should we not expect improvements in all aspects of newer hardware?
  • I don't review games. Now what?

Disclaimer:

I'm way older than most of you, so I'll be dead sooner. Those extra seconds are cutting into my coupon clipping and slipper shopping.

Would you say they shot themselves in the foot?

[*] Should we not expect improvements in all aspects of newer hardware?

not since loading and saving times in games have been getting slower and slower since the early 90s, not to mention more and more splash screens creating a barrier between us and our games. you can expect improvements on these sort of things, but it would be in direct competition with the trends of the last decade and 1/2

You are ignoring the fact that a cold boot is 30 seconds. They did not test a boot from a low power state. Until you actually read the thread and consider all the facts you are the one spewing hyperbole about this being an issue.

I edited my post so in fairness you may have missed it. I turn on my console, I play... I turn it off. Same with my desktop and all other electronics.

MonaKyshu, my PC games boot far quicker than they ever have in the past, as I have a dedicated SSD Steam drive.

yea i shoulda specified consoles

i know it takes atleast/about 30 seconds for the initial load of Last of Us, but i don't remember anyone mentioning that at all in reviews, so im not sure if they actually do care about it or not.

Unless you unplug your ps4 it will remain in a low power state.
