Game Informer: PS4's boot time makes us eager for 'suspend & resume'

This isn't really a problem when you have capabilities like suspend/resume coming, right?

How often should I really be cold booting this thing anyway? Not often I'd guess, except in the early going.

Unless you unplug your ps4 it will remain in a low power state.
Say what?

So, if I turn it off (and I'm assuming there's a stand-by light like my TV) it's in low power state, correct? Is this the same thing as when you're referring to 'suspend'?

I thought suspend was like when you put your laptop on sleep-mode.

Uh, why does it take so long? Usually consoles have a diminished init process (or barely check up for [new] hardware detection).

Just like the ps1 and I really enjoyed it

Oh, but that splash screen doesn't even compare with PS4's. Sorry.

30 seconds isn't bad. but I heard xbox one takes 31 seconds which is downright atrocious.

sorry, I'm kidding. seriously 30 seconds isn't too bad, but they are right about suspend/resume being beneficial here.. because it's not just 30 seconds.

it takes that long just to get to the interactive UI, but you still need to load the game you're playing to its main menu which probably takes another 15-30 seconds as well. so it can be over a minute before you can resume playing.

pretty sure you're right about suspend and "low power state" being different things

PS3 has a low power state waiting to be turned out, ala, the red light, but thats completely different from the PS4s ability to "hibernate" which is what i assume suspend is.

Laughing's cool. Educating is even better. Make with the knowledge.

Low power state = available at launch. Will allow you to download games to your PS4 while away from home, auto download updates, etc. Should be faster than cold boot, but time to boot is unknown.

Suspend resume= Suspends your game session while in low power state, so when you turn it back on you can go back to the exact same spot in the game. Not available at launch.

Takes me a hell of a lot longer to get a movie to start on bluray.... past all the stupid adds, even hitting skip. I don't really think this is a big deal, and it has already been stated that the Xbox One (cold boot) takes about the same amount of time to start up. To be honest this wont be a long term issue once all the features finally get implemented in both the Xbox One and PS4.

It's really simple.

If you're playing a game and you put your PS4 to sleep mid game, when you come back to the PS4 at a later time it will not resume where you left off in the game (you will lose any unsaved progress). You'll be back at the OS and you'll need to enter the game again (and go through whatever splash screens that are there).

To compare it to PSP/Vita. There are two states

Completely off
Stand by.

Both PSP and Vita can suspend a game when you put the device in standby and when you return to the device, it will resume the game from where you left off without having to enter the game from the OS. Many people do this when they're tired and can't find a save point for whatever game they're currently in. If you're waking your PS4 from standby it's not going to take 30 seconds. If you turn on your PS4 from the completely off state...it will take 30 seconds. It's like say your iPad. When you're finished using it do you hold down the power button and slide to power off or do you simply throw it into standby mode until you're ready to use it again?

The ability to put PS4 to sleep is and has always been there. The ability for sleep to suspend your game will not be there.

Serious question. Who actually fully turns off their system anyway?

I don't think I have cold booted my system since Bush was in office lol.

I have timed my Windows 7 bootup from splash. It is 64 seconds.

My Ubuntu is 7 seconds.

My IPhone 4S is 36 seconds

And ya know, with all of those, no fucks were given lol.

We are truly starving for info on this system.

Time to get an SSD, dude. My Win 8 PC boots in 8 seconds.

On-topic, I do wish the PS4 booted faster, but I don't think I'll be doing cold boots every time I turn the thing on.

Seems like a non issue.
How often do you do a cold boot?
My iPhone 4 is up within 45 seconds when it's been powered off completely. But I've had to restart it maybe 10 times these 3 years.

How long does it take power up the Wii, 360, PS3, WiiU?

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it.

For me then, it will always be in standby as I generally don't pause in console games. Doesn't sound as bad now. Damn, some of you and your over-reactions. :)

at least xbox one has the instant on thing at launch.. it's nice, and feels like a next gen thing, but it's not a deal breaker

This article is truly a great testament to how well sony has made The PS4 if the only complaints the press can find are: "The UI is bland " It takes a 30 seconds to start from a coldboot" And "no DLNA or mp3 support (atleast at launch)"

Today I learned 30 seconds is actually a long time according to GAF

Today I learnt there are some serious cases of ADHD and OCD on this site.

Id be far more concerned about how save data, updates, USB storage, customisation, connectivity and recovery are handled, but thats just me.

Different strokes for different folks i guess.

30 seconds?! I can't!!!

Might as well cancel next gen!

Eh, something negative about the PS4. I'm sure this'll be buried.

I can't figure out what's dumber: The fact that you believe this warrants actual "negative news" or the fact that you subscribe to the school of thought that believes GAF is Sony biased.

I'll never understand this type of shit. Who cares? It's 30 seconds. If you're that concerned about 30 seconds of your life then damn, you really need to reevaluate your schedule.

I'm actually kinda surprised that they think it's a big enough deal to report on the boot time being 30 seconds. I mean it seems a big longish for a console bootup, but at the same time it's 30 seconds... I'll just tap the PS button on my DS4 omw across the room and grab a coke. By the time I come back and sit down it will be booted up and ready to go. Suspend/resume is a nice feature and all but it's not something I'm clamoring for.

Edit: Just noticed I reached member status sometime over the past couple days. Sweet!

Is there some weird block on information out of this event? Or did they just spend a day with the PS4 and that's the most positive thing they can say?

But did people really kick up a fuss about the Wii U cold boot being 30 seconds? Really? Out of all of the Wii U's launch problems, a 30 second boot was a 'story'? If that's true I find that equally ridiculous.

There's a difference between a 30 second cold-boot and a 30 seconds to reach every damn screen on the Wii U including the damn settings.

Oh, so that's what it was. Yea... that's not even remotely similar, people. =/

I don't even know if you need to cold boot after the first time. Standby should definitely be quicker than cold boot?

@BrandonRich @giantbomb PS4 will ship with standby mode, which you can download updates while the main power is off. Not with suspend mode.
