Expect the protagonist shockingly not to defeat fucking Sauron.

Well, you can expect Sauron not to die.

Spoilers.

Calling Edmund Dantes!

But seriously, I think you'd have more trouble finding areas of Middle Earth lore that HAVEN'T been fleshed out officially in some way, especially events surrounding the War of the Ring. The Force Unleashed is really just oo apt a comparison, and my complaint isn't necessarily that it's veering off of established fiction but that the "fused with a wraith" macguffin just seems incredibly lazy and out of character with most of the rest of the Middle Earth universe. Wraith fusion isn't a thing in the Tolkien verse, it's like inventing Super Saiyan Alpha J Truxomogolagoly 3 in the DBZ universe (though GT basically did just that it wasn't based on the manga either so HAH)

It seems a feeble attempt to make Rangers more badass. They don't need to be, they're goddamned rangers. You know how everyone in Bree shits themselves when Aragorn walks in even though he's the nicest guy ever? It's because he's a ranger. They've seen some shit.

Once upon a time they were a highly respected PC developer, though their reputation and output has went downhill quite a lot recently.

I disagree with that very strongly, I thought their output this generation was excellent. I know they aren't the same as they used to be but they still produce the goods IMO.

Nemesis system sounds cool, but even if they just do something fresh with regards to encounters I am interesting.

Great encounter design is hard to come by nowadays.

Sure we do, that's exactly why it's a "what if?". We already know what happens between the two stories, so seeing someone make up a story of their own is interesting to me since I have no idea what to expect.

Not mention that the intelectual rights are divided (last time I checked) in moviverse stuff and the books stuff.

Also a terrible excuse to have the guy be 'conflicted and dark'.

He's an Anti-Hero traveling to dark lands to confront a dark power that is the only thing that can save him FROM HIMSELF!

I just gave myself shivers.

Blech. That was like a good 20% of LotR's charm. If you have none of the beauty and mysticism of Middle-Earth, the darkness overtaking the land becomes a sort of parody of itself.

My heart caught in my throat when I thought this might finally be an open-world RPG set in Middle Earth where you can choose your race and design your character.

Then I saw you play as an Aragorn expy. Oh, well.

This
Shadow of Mordor offers a new chapter that fits comfortably between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players control a lone ranger by the name of Talion as he journeys deep into the heart of Mordor in the days before it transforms into a blasted hellscape.

makes it not a what-if? - it makes it a "lol lets slap on the IP so we can cash in on the movies".

Just copy fucking Bethesda. I'd be content. Just do something that isn't hopelessly pandering to a teen grimdark audience that has long since grown up.

Maybe you guys are more mature than me, but this was the first thing I thought.

Okay, I giggled.

Boromir obviously hasn't heard the tale of Talion.

Oh god that's a stupid fucking name.

Do you see that cover? He's holding a broken sword and the head of some thwarted enemy while glowing with malevolent power.

Okay, I've decided I'm now offended at the very existence of this game. It insults me as a fan of the source material and greatly undermines Tolkien's words in the name of a lazy cash-grab on the part of WB. I intend to write many stern posts over the coming months expressing just how gosh-darn angry I am at Monolith.

We cool now, guys?

The whole individual/unique enemy system sounds interesting. Always wanted RPGs to have more weight and have designed enemies rather than clones that keep spawning. Not too eager about the setting though and would rather they have something new but I guess the LOTR name sells it. Don't really care whether it changes the canon or not since I'm not LOTR fan but it would have been nice to have new settings.

Please, please, please, please be inspired by the Souls series and Dragon's Dogma in terms of combat mechanics and encounters.

Don't feel this right now. I want Skyrim 2. Doubt this would be any close to it.

Come on, I actually want a different story set in the same Middle Earth and time period. An open world, at that. It's a game that I will be playing and having fun with, so I am more than flexible in that regard. Besides, I can't get enough Lord of the Rings.

Frankly it sounds like level scaling sold as a new feature, to me.
Possibly, but I guess I just took it in conjunction with the previous bit about encounters and thought about how they might integrate memorable foes into specific encounters to spice them up.

Probably all buzz words, but I'm intrigued.

I think this is the last chance for Monolith. if it don't end well or sell well I can see WB killing the studio.

WB definitely has a lot invested in Monolith at this point, especially after the Seattle clean-up that had Snowblind and Surreal merged into them. This is definitely a make-or-break project for them, sad as it sounds for a studio with the kind of history they have behind them.

Seems mildly interesting but cross-gen is a bit of a passion-killer for me. I'm trying not to support any cross-gen projects.

Why does the guy in the pic have a broken sword?
