(NPD Canada) October / November Results

I know that NPD Canada for November was posted, but some of the Canada numbers floating around last month from October were fake. Also, given how big and how quickly the NPD threads can move, it could easily have been missed by many.

Many thanks to NPD Canada.

In any case, here they are:

PS3 and 360 almost crossed streams in November

Uncharted lives up to the name again.
Just shows you how price sensitive the markets are.
In canada the 360 Premium and 40G PS3 are same price.
Xbox 360 is long due for a price cut in all regions to drive up some sales after the holiday season is over.

Well, NPD December should be very interesting because of the Wii shortages.

Unless Nintendo has been stockpiling an insane amount of consoles, the XBOX 360 will likely inch close to Nintendo in December.

2008 and beyond is all speculation.

LTDs by the numbers I'm using for Canada + U.S. (i.e. Canada has a few guestimated entries):

360 - 8.5 million
WII - 6.6 million
PS3 - 2.6 million

1.9 million is really possible to get erased by the end of next year, I'm betting.

YTD numbers, same note as above:

WII - 5.4 million
360 - 3.6 million
PS3 - 1.9 million

Therefore if 2008 plays out like 2007, WII should pass 360 for U.S.+ Canada by the end of next year. Back in June, I had guessed that WII would pass 360 in the U.S. around March 2009, so that would push up the takeover date by a few months.

The combined total changes to:

360 - 8.5 million
WII - 6.6 million
PS3 - 2.7 million

I was only a few K off before with Canada, so the PS3 number, right at a rounding point, is the only one to change.

PS3 price cut had a more pronounced effect in Canada.
PS3 price drop was bigger in Canada. $160 drop, coupled with the Canadian Dollar rising.

It's a combination of factors.

Good news for Canada, we are starting to see the Consoles here go down in price and be the same price ad the US equivalents. Nevertheless, after you factor in taxes in Canada compared to the USA, still cheaper to buy games and consoles in the States. Yes, I know that fuel costs could be added to one's total budget of how much you spent on tracking the games and buying them, but overall the USA is the mecca of cheap games and consoles.

Also we are used to an expense 60 cent dollar PS2 launch so i think many canadians are willing to pay 400-500 for a console.

Nice sales for all consoles and you bet your ass the price cut for the PS3 helped immensely. Happy to see my fellow Canadians spread the love. :)

Thanks for the data, here is a counted up tally from the Euro hardware thread, the 12/3 - 12/9 Media Create Thread, and this own thread.

North America

8.5 million 360
6.6 million Wii
2.7 million PS3

Japan
482k 360
4.06 million Wii
1.46 million PS3

Europe
3.06 million Wii
2.54 million 360
1.29 million PS3

WW LTD (roughly, in millions)

11.52 360's
13.72 Wii's
5.45 PS3's

One can easily see that North America adopts new systems at a much higher rate than either Japan or Europe.

Wii's selling like crazy. Looking at that number is just astounding. It only took them one year, of which they were supply constrained through nearly all of it, to sell more than 13 million consoles...in one year...yeppers.

360 selling decently, of course, and PS3's 5 million+ worldwide through 1 year is pretty interesting seeing as how crazy its launch was, what with reported in-line robberies, 24 hour lineups, and massive shortages.

I haven't kept up with Canadian NPD, only US but is this the first time that PS3 has outsold the PS2 up north?
Yes.

The PS3 LTD seems strange to me, that means it sold 16-17K in March. That's a lot higher than I would've guessed based on how it did compared to the other five months in the first half of the year. Can we get the other HW numbers for March?

lookin at the wolrdwide LTD,the ps3 isnt in such bad shape. 6 mill sold when december is all said and done,360 will be at 12 mill. the 360 had a full yr head start and the ps3 seems to be keeping pace, this is at a higher price point too. 360 got NA on lock but everywhere else is pretty much up for grabs. this is for 2nd place mind you,the wii is too far ahead to be tlaking about #1 at the moment

It's not at a higher price point in Canada, both the premium and 40gb PS3 are 399CAD. Microsoft Canada is really dropping the ball on this, as at 350CAD and the two packed in games it would obviously have been a better deal in the general consumers eyes.

Where did these figures come from? (Can't find the "Euro hardware thread".) I haven't seen complete Europe numbers listed before. Do they include all Pal territories, like Australia?

That's definitely the bigger story. I know more than a handful of people who just hopped over the boarder for their 360 instead. Why pay a $50-$100 premium because MS doesn't feel like parity pricing?

holy crap ltd numbers.
Still no GCN or XBX though? Come onnn lay the feud to rest :(
The problem is that NPD launched its Canadian tracking service in 2004, with its first report being data for Dec. 2003. At that time they also gathered information going back about a year prior, and provided historical data going back to Oct. 2002. So as far as I know, there are no numbers prior to Oct/02, which means that about a year of sales would be missing for both GCN and XBX. It's possible that NPD put together a very rough estimate for sales going back further than Oct/02 just to get a complete LTD number, but I have never heard anything that would support that notion, and even if they did, any numbers prior to Oct/02 would be very iffy at best anyway, since NPD wasn't actually tracking any data at that time.

What I can tell you from news articles printed back during those years is this:

2003: GCN > XBX
2004: XBX > GCN
2005: GCN > XBX

Also, at that time, there was a news article which stated that by the end of 2005, GCN LTD had surpassed XBX LTD in Canada, and with the XBX being killed at the end of 2005, GCN surely outsold XBX in 2006 as well. But as I said, the first NPD data was collected for Dec/03, with historical data being provided back to Oct/02, so the first year of sales for each system would be missing.

Likewise, the PS2 and GBA totals which Sonycowboy provided (thanks SC!) should probably only be from Oct/02 until now. I suspect that the months before Oct/02 would be missing from those totals. Unless, as I said, NPD threw together a rough LTD estimate from launch, but any data before Oct/02 would be highly questionable anyway.

For Canada's December NPD

+1 Wii
+1 Wii Play

for me. My inner consumer whore couldn't resist given the opportunity, seeing how people are lining up for it every day hoping to catch one of the seemingly random Wii shipments :lol

Not complete Euro numbers, but as close as we are going to get for a while...
While that is true, the thread isn't accurate even with the limited numbers we have.

For instance we have confirmation that Wii beat 360's LTD in UK, which should be well over a million too. The thread has Wii in UK at 1.19 and 360 at 1.55 - as mentioned above that's not possible. If that 360 number is correct Wii is at 1.55+.

Then there's no real source for Spain's numbers.

Using these totals is a bit...problematic.
