Polygon's marathon Xbox One live stream

This little panel seems very reasonable.although they seem to say the UI is a bit difficult to use with a controller, and voice is basically unreliable.

So which part of this is the future?

Words like horrible are thrown around way to easily these days. Horrible, terrible, etc are words that should be reserved for the worst shit out there. Damnation, Ride to Hell, Quantom Theory...

You might not think Ryse looks great... but man... horrible? Come on now.

The beta testing part. They haven't beta tested it yet. That's what day one buyers are for.

The stream's been pretty good. I'm enjoying their picking apart of the UI issues. I'm getting one, but it seems like those first few months are going to be bumpy as fuck.

So the voice control sucks, navigating the UI with the controller sucks, and there are certain functions you can only do with voice? Need a manual to operate a console wtf.

Why is it that guys in the games press are bitter and cynical and seem miserable, while Youtube streamers seem to genuinely love games and are really happy and funny.

I won't go so far as to call the game objectively horrible, but for my taste, extremely beautiful games that are piss poor mechanically are indeed horrible. I think they're all the more horrible for their possible effects on the industry, lowering the standards of good design, especially if they sell well.

In terms of gameplay, what makes Ryse better than Quantum Theory anyway? The high quality models you get to look at while scripted animations play out in close-up? I've only played the demo of Quantum Theory (and I thought it was bad for all the reasons everyone thinks its bad) but I'm honestly probing as to how Ryse is better, other than how much effort was put into its presentation.

I wasn't talking about the depth, I would agree with you on this. It's more the "hit enemy until the counter sign shows up then counter." type of combat that I meant. You can of course have different levels of depth here.
In exactly the same way, God Of War and Ninja Gaiden feature the same type of combat, though with vastly different depth.

That's all.

Oh, well in that case I suppose I agree with you. You're right, Ryse's combat is more like AC or the Arkham games than God of War.

But again, like you said, those games are open-world with other gameplay mechanics (platforming, stealth and puzzle solving to a lesser extent) that are just as prominent which helps make up for the combat, something that Ryse doesn't have.

Ryse has absolutely great graphics but as soon as the combat starts it's all downhill. There's sections where the animation stalls and resets to focus on another enemy. It isn't nice and there's absolutely no combat flow like in GoW or Batman. Looks really, REALLY bad

Really dude? One's a job - where you have to rush through new releases within 5 days to shit out a review pretty regularly.

The other is some dude having fun only playing the games he likes while consuming some TBell in the basement.

I can't really speak about it gameplay wise cause I have yet to play Ryse. I'm not spouting praises for the game but I wn't condemn it for being "horrible" either.. Visually it looks outstanding. I don't know how the game feels to control, play, and the feedback from combat and timing. This stuff will be crucial for my basis on the final game.

As for Quatum Theory...it was piss poor in multiple areas. From a visual boring design, to some horrrific controls, a story that made no sense, with little to no reason of trying to attempt anything other then being a bare bones Gears of War rip off. That game is, was, and will always be a turd in gaming.

They raised a good point about playing at night. No point having a UI so focused on voice if you need to be quiet and not disturb people in the house at night.

I'm not partial to them. I just hate the GAF bullying. I'd just as quickly stand up for any other outlet (and have). We should welcome a diverse press. I think Polygon's angle centers less around an unadulterated "love for MS" and more so reflects what THEY desire in games. What the hell is wrong with that?

You have no idea what you're talking about, so stfu, eh? ..."jr detective work" my ass.

Well not jr to you, i'm 8 years older "b".

Gaf isn't the only gaming site that you use that name, and there happens to be another name/ e-mail addy i stumbled upon that puts quite a good deal about you in perspective.

You may want to do the shutting the eff up and learn how not to leave such an obvious digital footprint along with your one note defense of polygon, it makes things to easy.

Indeed. I suppose they try to make up for that with turret sections and...roman formation QTE sections? I don't know about the latter, but I doubt turret sections would excite me anymore. Judging by your name, I would assume you are not to thrilled about them either. The one in ME3 was really boring.

Hahaha all the Forza AI drivers purposefully knocking all the bins and pylons onto the track, creating a track littered with debris, was hilarious. Asshole AI confirmed.

Detective GAF strikes again

The changes to Xbox controller have me a bit concerned. More specifically the bumper changes. The changes were illustrated quite clearly on the stream, the fact that it is not very easy to move your finger from the trigger to the bumper.

On the 360 (if the game allowed it), I would configure my action/jump command to a bumper. It seemed intuitive because I would never have remove my thumbs off the analog sticks. Now I guess I will have to wait and see if the Xbox One controller retains the same feeling.

WHAT?!

Forza 5 has the optimum line on and they start reacting to it something like this: "what is happening? this isn't real racing, what is that line? is this a glitch?"
One minute later they come to the conclusion that you have to follow the line and break when it goes red, omg

Also the one guy drove the car he's playing right now and therefor knows the real deal, Forza can't compete, go figure

Just turned in, and am facepalming hard, never have thought of something like that.
Before they had a pre recorded video of a controller comparison which was actually pretty good, but now, them being live, damn

Seriously that guy playing now doesnt have the slightest idea how real car simulator games work...(not how he is playing, but what he is saying about it)

DO YOU LIKE THIS?

Why is it that guys in the games press are bitter and cynical and seem miserable, while Youtube streamers seem to genuinely love games and are really happy and funny.
If Youtubers had to play tons of games they didn't want to play, and at a pace set by management... yeah

You have to wonder at what point it goes from a racing game to a do what you want racing game
Well it's not open world like Horizon, but being able to persistently knock thousands of pieces of debris around on a track is one of the few great uses of next gen power I can think of. They can spell things and play bin football and such.

Between this and Gamespot's coverage of Forza yesterday... my god. Utterly clueless. It's no wonder there aren't more mainstream sim racers.

People commenting, "Dey can't even get the voice commands right, so dumb!", do you guys realize that the average consumer is going to have an even worse time with this? Some of the commands are completely ass-backwards and there seems to be no single theme or unified, sensible keyword library that the thing will respond to.

I wish I could be a fly on the wall in the house of Joe Sixpack, hooking up his Xbone to watch some NFL and ending up smashing the thing because it simply doesn't respond to what the fuck you're saying unless you memorize certain speech patterns and specific out-of-the-blue keywords that seem completely arbitrary.

If this is one of the "Pillars of the XBox ecosystem", then they fucked up. Fucked up big, because the UI seems to be a complete chore to navigate without voice.

huh?
they were talking about this stuff:
24xwfyw.png

when they talked about glitching, not the line which he described because not everyone plays driving games...

Why are these guys playing forza? Doesn't look like their kind of game at all. (Although I agree that bumper cam is stupid)

Will have to rewatch the archive to get an exact quote, but Chris Plante said some things about the AI that basically amounted to AI emulating sloppy multiplayer races > AI attempting to simulate real race behavior.

And now he's complaining about bumper cam being dumb.
I hope he never has or never will write about racing games on the simmier side.

You might think you 'won' that one, you didn't.
You might think coming sideways at a stranger with vague openended threats makes for a cool highhorse. It doesn't, especially if your horse is eye level to my knee. you have no idea how i think, winning anything except a million dollars on the net doesn't concern me.

they were? srsly?
okay, I'm absolutely sorry then

not enjoying the stream too much so far

edit: oh you can instantly switch back on livestream.com - saw it again now, I had a little lag when this happened live, didn't seem that extreme, I feel embarrassed now, really sorry

It's gonna be bad. Really, really bad.

I am zero familiar with the Polygon crew but these two (especially the ventriloquist dummy with the high voice) are by far the worst to listen to.
Kudo's to him for not being too shy to speak despite his uniquely high pitched voice, it could be worse i guess. On the same token, its part if why i'll avoid the stream, not like they need my clicks anyways.

ugh watching these guys play forza is painful.

interesting comment about the drivatars and rewind though, I didn't even think of that.

Are they getting paid to keep saying "Thats the future"? Why am I hearing this shit all of a sudden?

"What are boosts? Oh god, are there micro-transactions in here?"

Did that boost screen appear right after the race or did they press a button to activate it? It would suck balls if it pops up all the time to annoy you.
