He got sent to Rikers at 16!? I thought you went to Juvie unless they fought to have you tried as an adult. I thought that was rare and only for extremely violent crimes. geez

Poor kid. Messed up all around

It'd be interesting to find out what took the trial 3 years to complete.

I knew people wouldn't understand the sarcasm without the lol even though it's NYPD we're talking about here, but you didn't get it even with the lol? Seriously guys?

But when will the people of America take a stand and speak out? When will we stop sitting on our ass and do something to change this crap?

I hate to be the downer but, all of us typing on a forum isn't going to change things.

I plan to dedicate a portion of my life to fighting this shit. To speak out. To lead a charge for actual justice. But for the most part, a wide majority of Americans simply just DO NOT CARE. They don't lose sleep over it.

We need to take a stand.

lol isn't exclusively used as a sarcasm marker. In the context of your post it came off as you laughing at people for believing the story.

Well it's hard to really blame people for not getting it when there's at least five non-sarcastic posts like yours in almost every race related topic.

How is this not a straight up violation of civil and constitutional rights?

What happened to the right to a fair and speedy trial?

Sue for everything.

I caught it as soon as I read it. But I think I'm better than a lot at reading sarcasm on the internet. <_<

Did he even get a trial? Or was it that because his family could not pay, he was locked up in Rikers automatically?

One has to wonder if he had gotten a fair trial, none of this would have happened, because I am sure there was ZERO evidence linking him to this so called robbery...

ugggh, gross.

Shit reminds me of the kids who was locked in an FBI office for a week or so.

Incompetence really knows no bounds.

God this pisses me off so freakin' much!

Sure he will get a rather large sum of money from this, but he won't get the time wasted in a cell back. Hopefully he can recover mentally as well...

The official complaint states Browder was "physically assaulted and beaten" by officers and other inmates during his time at Rikers Island. The document also maintains the accused was "placed in solitary confinement for more than 400 days" and was "deprived meals." In addition, officers allegedly prevented him from pursuing his education. Browder attempted suicide at least six times.

Holy fuck. Every sentence of this. I can't even...

Everybody's innocent in here. Didn't you know that?

Once marijuana is legalized or nationally decriminalized it will be scary just how true this will be.

Add to that cruel and unusual punishment. Why was he even put in Rikers in the first place as a juvenile. What they did was subject him to torture for three years. Sue yes but there is no way people shouldn't be going over to jail over this. Then again that's if any actual justice comes from this.

I can't believe this. Our legal system is already laughable, but this is just beyond words. My deepest sympathies to the man. He deserves something big for this. If he was white, this wouldn't have happened. Pathetic.

Three years in Rikers and 400 of those days locked alone in a room must have been hell. On top of that he had to deal with physical and mental abuse, along with being deprived of meals. I hope this kid sues everyone he can and ends being set for life.

A minor that isn't white in NYC is accused of something, gets put in fucking RIKERS, left there for three years.

I, ah...people need to lose jobs, financial security and the ability to hold it in if they have to go to the bathroom over this. De Blasio has an opportunity to put the fucking thumbscrews to people here shortly, and I hope he does so.

Whoever put this kid behind bars man, he or she is the one who ought to be in prison.

Quite literally my worst fear as a black male is that I will "fit the description" and get thrown in jail. It seems that being innocent is just not enough some times.

"Though on crime" laws + American anti-rehabilitation prision system + stop and frisk = this. It is a cocktail from hell and a fucking travesty.

Rikers at 16 with no trial, no priors, off of the word of one person with no evidence.
Give him all the money...

I hope he gets plenty because they would have to give me the prison TBQH. Six suicide attempts, that cash wouldn't do shit for me. I'd be in therapy for years just to qwell the bitterness.

I never thought I'd say this, but I completely understand violence against police officers in this day and age. We're rapidly approaching the point where people who have made a career in law enforcement are de facto criminals simply for upholding the rule of law.

I'm sitting thinking and hoping he has the strength to not do what I would do if I were in his situation. I can't even elaborate further.

If it were myself I could probably live with it. If it were a family member, though? And they had been locked up, placed in solitary for months, tortured, attempted suicide several times....

...there would be a reckoning.

Sounds like quite a few people Joe-Paterno'd and totally ignored a very serious crime occuring.

I hope he gets justice against those who violated his rights. Doubt it'll happen. but I hope something finds it's way.

More shame to be an American. :(

Seriously, this young man ought to have the goddamn world as his oyster, and it ought to be handed to him on a platter.

When i said that the US has way bigger issues to tackle instead of focusing racist slang and whatsnot to eradicate racism, i was told "stop posting". I won't comment further because this is seriously enraging and i could get banned easily.
