Quantum Break uses DI4D facial animation tech

Never really heard of the technology myself, but it looks great to me...

Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break will make use of a nifty piece of face-scanning technology known as DI4D, created by Scottish middleware company Dimensional Imaging. As explained by the latter's CEO Colin Urquhart in the latest issue of OXM, DI4D allows developers to scan actors in three dimensions while they perform, and thus represents "the highest fidelity of facial motion capture that's available on the market".

The tech eschews older techniques such as make-up markers and structured light; instead, performances are captured by way of nine cameras arranged around the capturing area, and operating at 60 frames a second. Accordingly, Remedy is able to "really capture the detail and subtlety of the performances" you'll see in Quantum Break, a photo-realistic shooty-puzzly endeavour in which players can stop time.

Remedy's creative director Sam Lake has said a little more on the subject to Develop. "Quantum Break is a hugely ambitious project that combines action and narrative components in a unique way to bring the characters to life," he told the site via press release. "The only way to achieve the high quality of performance was to create highly realistic digital doubles of talented actors.

"By using Dimensional Imaging's DI4D facial performance capture solution combined with our Northlight storytelling technology, we can ensure that every nuance of the actors' performances are captured on screen."

this all must be in anticipation of VGX. get that hype machine going boys!

It's a pretty great solution. Much easier to set up than most facial capture techniques. I expect we'll see a lot of it this gen.

I'm actually not that impressed, and I can only guess that in-game it will look even less impressive. Half life 2 blew me away in 2004 and it still holds up.

Stupid Remedy, you should kept this technology to yourself.
jk

It's great that this technology is not propriety of Remedy/MS, it means more games with great facial animations.

I'm not a fan of facial motion capturing. It always gives me heavy uncanny valley feelings.

I like what NaughtyDog did in TheLastOfUs. They manually animated faces and didn't capture them.
Looked at lot better than top tier facial capturing like in Crysis3 or Beyond: Two Souls.

This technology is going to get better and better, can't wait to see what the big studios will be able to do with all this powerful tech.

I'm pretty certain that the tech is capable of great stuff, but so far I'm rather unimpressed - I think the main reason is that the color palette of the shown scenes with faces is making the faces looking kind of flat and unsaturated

I'm definitely a sucker for good facial animation, but I want better hair before better faces. The hair in AC4 really bothers me for some reason, and I'd really like to see, one day, hair quality on the par of the "TressFX" hair from the PC version of Tomb Raider.
